Happy 2008 to all! That said, this is my first fic of 2008. Just like the one from last year, this is an Ouran High School Host Club story.

Summary: Hikaru and Koaru reflect on what has changed in the past year. Oneshot.
Welcome to the New Year
It was the first day of the New Year. Kaoru was lying in bed staring at his bedroom ceiling. His hands were crossed on his chest and his brother was sleeping on his side right next to him. While Hikaru snored lightly, Kaoru contemplated the different things he had accomplished with Hikaru during the past year. For starters, he had made a new friend, a new female friend. That in itself wouldn't mean much to anyone, but for the twins it was the start of an expansion of their world. Someone had also told them apart. Haruhi was able to do things to the members of the Host Club that no one had been able to do before. Maybe they had been stuck in their rich world for too long. Maybe all that they had been missing was a commoner in their lives to show them what the outside world was really like.
Kaoru smiled softly as he remembered all of the crazy adventures that he had had during the past year with his brother and the other members of the Host Club. Sure there were times when things got boring, but in the end, he was glad that he had somewhere to go to and people that he could actually consider as friends. It was entertaining to annoy Tamaki almost every day and play tricks on Haruhi. Kaoru wanted his brother's opinion on the matter so he woke him up.
"What do you want?" His brother asked him as he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.
"I was just thinking about the things that happened during the year. Don't you agree that this year was better than the others?" Hikaru was silent for a moment before answering him.
"I don't see what was so special about it." His brother said rolling over to get some more sleep.
"Think about it Hikaru, our lives changed for the better this year." There was a long pause and Kaoru was sure that his brother had gone back to sleep, but then the older twin answered him.
"Yeah, I guess you're right. What are you trying to get at?"
"Nothing, I'm just saying that I kind of like this change, don't you?" Hikaru thought about it long and hard. Before, his life revolved around "them and us". Now there were other people that had some sort of value for him and his brother. The more he contemplated this, the more he had to agree with Kaoru. Last year had been a dramatic change for them when they had entered the Host Club, but this year their world had expanded even more when they had met Haruhi the commoner. She was more of a blessing and wake-up call to their lives than anything else. Hikaru smiled.
"I guess you're right Kaoru, now goodnight." He rolled over and puffed up his pillow.
"Don't you mean good morning?" Kaoru giggled as Hikaru grunted.
"Shut up." Was all his brother told him. Kaoru said nothing and waited for his brother to be asleep before answering him.
"Happy New Year." And then he returned to sleep as well. It was an excellent start to the New Year and who knew what would be in store for them this coming year.
