A Splash of Color

Neji stood near the edge of his room's balcony. The view of the garden below him made him smile as he watched his cousin Hinata plant another flower bush.

Although he was rather hard on her, would never admit it but, he was rather fond of her. She seemed to be so shy and delicate, yet he knew how strong she was capable of being. He continued to watch her as she wiped the sweat form her brow and waved towards him as their gazes met.

He didn't wave back, but nodded slightly to acknowledge her. He turned away and entered his room. Tomorrow would be his cousin's birthday and he still needed a present.

He thought for a while, before finally decided on a painting. He wasn't too shabby at art, and he was sure his cousin would appreciate the gift.

He brought out a small canvas and easel, some oil paints and a few brushes before starting. He had an idea of what to paint in his mind, and with a few alterations, it would be perfect.

The next day came quickly and the Hyuuga clan was in a bustle of excitement for Hinata's 15th birthday.

Neji finished his painting late last night and it was nearly dry now. He prepared a ribbon for his gift before dressing himself and descending to join the festivities.

He walked towards his cousin, only speaking to went necessary, but kept her company as she greeted and thanked all her guests and relatives throughout the evening.

When the party finished, Neji asked Hinata to follow him upstairs. He lead her to his room but made her wait a moment before entering.

When she entered her cousin's room, she gasped slightly at the sight before her. She took the painting and the rose from her cousin and smiled, as a few tears started to gather at the corner of her eyes.

The painting Neji made was about her the other day, as she was in the garden. The only difference was that he changed her usual attire into a white dress from the early century, and that Neji was with her carrying her umbrella, smiling sweetly at her from behind.

"Do you like it?" Neji asked.

"It's wonderful!" Hinata said as she pulled the boy near her in a warm embrace. "Thank you Neji-niisan"

"You're welcome Hinata." Neji replied. "And Happy Birthday."

He gave her a light peck on her forehead, before releasing her from his grasp. Surprisingly, Hinata did not reciprocate his actions, but pulled him closer to her frame instead.

She looked up, into the eyes of her cousin before leaning forward and kissing him on the lips. "I love you Neji-kun." She said as she broke their kiss.

Neji was slightly surprised at her actions, but regained composure and cupped her face, drawing her close into another kiss. "Same here Hinata-san."
