Time was meaningless. How long had she spent on her back? The sun was gone, the moon was dead; only the crack in the door signified the existence of anything but eternal darkness. Only the worried hum of Mommy and Daddy's voices reminded her that she was not isolated, that she was not yet dead, not yet reduced to a broken heart and circuits done up in a pretty black wrapping.

Sometimes she imagined (or did she really?) she saw a flutter of luminous silvery hair in the crack in the door and the knife of light that cut through her dark room. It shone to make the moon jealous, to make the stars cry, and she imagined that she heard the angel attached to the flutter cry, too.

Sometimes she imagined a mirror was suspended over her. A strange, inversed mirror. Where she was wrapped in a long, ruffled black gown, the figure in her mirror was clouded in white. Where she smiled at the company her mirror image provided, though she could not longer speak coherently, the eyes and the corners of her reflection's mouth were heavy.

Her reflection's hands were cold.

One day, the two humming voices behind the door, never in that one, blessed blade of light, became three. A soft, childish voice was begging for answers. A white voice sailed on the air to her hungry ears, deprived by those who wished not to disturb her, show her the face of the love she could not have.

Urgency, she detected dreamily. Sadness. The pretty, soft, little voice was growing stronger and stronger, if not louder. Resolution. The white voice had a song to sing, and she would do so without an audience or a conductor, if need be.

The white voice and the familiar hums phased in and out, in and out, until Freya wondered how long it had truly been. They abruptly silenced, and then Freya watched as her mirror image materialized. The white-shrouded owner of the white voice touched her hands again as light flooded the room, and whispered for her to turn her head to the side.

Become a part of me... whispered the white voice. We will be together. I will not lose you and you will not lose me.

I will be one with you.

You will be one with me.
