"I am not a pawn." A chess piece moved.

"Of course you're not. A pawn moves at it's master's will. You move only at your own will." A piece countered.

"Then why do I sometimes get the feeling that all of us are moving to your tune?" Another piece was moved on the opposite side of the board.

"Touché, but if I was really orchestrating things, you and your colleagues would have no idea," and a piece was captured, "like that."

"But sometimes the conductor makes a mistake and errs." The capturing piece was taken.

"Ah, but if he is good enough the audience has no idea."

"And you are?"

"But of course, and trust me you wouldn't know if I wasn't." The smirk that was his trademark increased. "Check."

"I think otherwise," was replied and the king was moved out of harm's way.

"True, you do come closer than many, but you're still just a critic."

"One who has nearly caught you many times."

"Ah, but 'nearly' and 'caught' are two different things." A piece was moved.

"I could catch you now." another piece was moved.

"First, you couldn't and second, you won't. You like our chess games too much. Check."

The conversation slowed and the chess game continued until, "Checkmate."

"Darn it, you won again."

"Of course, I have to be able to beat you at something."

"Well, good game, Tantei-kun. Same time next week?"

At the little detective's nod Kid smirked tipped his hat and disappeared. A note was left in his place. It read:

At a week from today I will

Take your winning streak.

Conan's eyes glittered. "We'll see about that, Kaitou Kid."

I hope you enjoyed reading it. In case it wasn't clear the speaker was the same every other line. This plot bunny bit me one night and didn't stop until I wrote at least a rough draft. Hopefully it's worth the time and effort I spent on it. (All 20 minutes of it.) Review please.
