Jealousy's An Ugly Thing
(I never thought I'd die alone…)

He was alone and broken, and for the first time in his life, he was absolutely terrified. That witch had promised him that giving in to the darkness would only make him stronger, that he would have neither fears nor weaknesses afterwards. He could finally save Kairi and take back what was rightfully his to begin with – the keyblade. His mind began to drift back to the days when he, Kairi and Sora would play on the islands together. He could recall sunsets and laughs, games of tag, and promises to stay together forever, just the three of them. He scoffed. Apparently, Sora didn't remember those promises. Hadn't he already replaced him and Kairi with that duck and...and...and the weird dog-like thing? Apparently promises didn't mean very much to the Bearer of the Key. As he thought on all these things, the air grew colder as the darkness got stronger. He could feel the emptiness sweeping through his bones as it swallowed him, welcoming him with its cool, dark embrace. Then pain overtook him, causing him to scream in agony. Is this what it's like to die? he thought.

(I laughed the loudest -- who'd have known?)

He had to take his mind of off the pain, so he thought about the good old days, the days before the darkness came, Sora forgot them (most importantly him), before he was here, alone, about to embrace a life without light. He chuckled to himself as he recalled beating Sora in their matches back on the island. He remembered how his friend would pout and say he cheated, but would be challenging him to a rematch five seconds later. He remembered always being number one. He was the best of everything: fighter, friend, runner, seeker, blitzball player. He was the strongest. It should have been him out there wielding the keyblade and saving the worlds. He was the best, damnit. He had been the one laughing the loudest back home, but here in the darkness, he felt only quiet sobs. Who'd have known I'd die alone? he thought as the darkness finally consumed him.

it's a short drabble. riku centric. it's sad.
i'm suffering from writer's block, so of course,
this isn't as long as I wanted it to be. i've had
the beginning of this typed up for a long time,
and just now have i decided to finish it and post.
as for the title, it just seemed to fit.
