Ice cream

-

Roy glanced around the cafeteria as he took a bite of his food. He was reaching for his drink when someone sat down beside him. Picking up the cup, Roy looked to his side and saw Maes Hughes leaning heavily against the table.

"Something wrong?" Roy asked around the food in his mouth, then took a drink.

"It's just been a bad day," Hughes said. Reaching over he plucked one of the fries from Roy's plate and nibbled on it. "I guess I just need something to cheer me up."

Roy frowned. "And you came to see me?" he asked wryly, then took another bite. Hughes shrugged and stole another fry.

Feeling at a bit of a loss, Roy looked blandly around the room as he chewed. Suddenly his head wiped back and let his gaze fix on Edward Elric. The twelve-year-old was trying to talk the servers into giving him more ice cream.

That was when the idea came to him and his lips curled up into a slow smile. He watched as Ed moped away from the counter, unsuccessful in his pursuit of a second helping, then caught his attention with a little wave of his hand. The boy gave him a sideways glance before wandering over.

"What?" the kid said ungraciously.

"I noticed that you were trying to get more ice cream," Roy said smoothly.

"So..." Ed said defensively.

"You know they don't give seconds here, right?" To this, Ed said nothing. Roy grinned and pushed his serving of ice cream toward Ed. "You can have mine, if you want it."

The boy blinked, then said, "Are you sure?"

"Absolutely," Roy said amiably. It took about ten seconds for the ice cream to disappear, and for the container to make its way back on Roy's tray. Roy watched a satisfied smile grow on Ed's face before he turned to Hughes and asked curiously, "How much milk do you think it takes to make one container of ice cream?"

Hughes raised an eyebrow at the question, but he didn't have time to answer as a strangled sound came from Ed's direction. They both looked at the boy who now looked a little green.

"There's milk… in ice cream...?" Ed choked.

"Of course, that's the main ingredient," Roy said in a way that showed that he was only trying to be helpful.

Suddenly, the kid raised his hands to his mouth and made a gurgling sound. "I'm going to die!" he exclaimed and made an exaggerated movement of being sick. He reached for the container on Roy's tray and spit in it a few times before he gagged and ran out of the cafeteria.

Roy watched him go with a small smile, then turned to Hughes who had a wide grin on his face.

"How was that?" he asked, feeling rather amused at Ed's little display.

Hughes laughed and said, "That was really mean." Roy's smile broadened and Hughes leaned in close and whispered in amusement, "Do you think he knows what cheese is made from?"
