Peter Parker couldn't believe it. After years of hiding his secret identity from his best friend, Harry Osborn. After nearly losing him twice, once after he attacked Peter in a misguided attempt to avenge his father, Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, and the other time was when Harry came to his aid against Sandman and the creature the newspapers are now calling Venom. And now, here he was playing basketball with Harry like nothing had happened.
"Yo Pete, heads up!" Harry shouted as he tossed the ball to him. Once upon a time that ball would've bonked him on the head. Now, with the reflexes of Spiderman, he caught it easily and sent it back to Harry, whose own reflexes, enhanced by a gas similar to what his father had used, allowed him to react almost as fast.
"Are you sure you should be playing ball so soon after your injuries?" Peter asked as they played. They weren't playing an actual game, just tossing the ball around and occasionally shooting it through a hoop.
"The doctors gave me a clean bill of health."
"Yeah, but I thought I had lost you again when Eddie Brock used his symbiote enhanced strength to skewer you on the spikes of your own glider."
"You almost did," Harry said, turning solemn for a moment. "An inch or two either way and even my enhanced recuperative powers couldn't have saved me."
"This is why I don't want you hurting yourself playing basketball. Not before the public gets a chance to see the Green Hornet in action again."
"The Green Hornet?" Harry asked in disbelief. "Where did you get that?"
"That's right, you've been in recovery. That's what the headlines have been calling you for the past week. And I quote: Newcomer Green Hornet aids Spiderman! New York's favorite hero gains flying sidekick in his hour of need." Peter was barely able to suppress a chuckle at his friend's expression.
"Where the heck do they get Green Hornet?" Harry asked in disbelief.
Peter just shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe they think your mask gives you bug eyes I don't know, but you are green, and if you look at that glider of yours it does kinda look like insect wings. Besides, they have to call you something and Hornet sorta goes along with spider."
"Okay, that explains the name, but where do they get the idea that I'm your sidekick? I mean I have the high tech equipment, the weapons, and an armored costume. You just have a lot of webbing and a set of tights."
"Hey, I came first so I get top billing. No amount of fancy toys can replace a familiar face in the hearts of the people. But if you want to dispute the whole sidekick thing we could schedule an interview with the papers. Say that you're my new partner or even an independent hero." Peter smiled. "If you think the Green Hornet can beat can beat Spiderman in a game."
"Only if you can find a place where two costumed super-studs can play without drawing a crowd."
"Oh I think I can find a place as long as you leave the high explosives at home."
"Then you are on partner."
The next day the newspapers were filled with the exploits of Spiderman and his partner the Green Hornet, Including a headline from The Daily Bugle claiming that the Hornet was just as much a menace as Spiderman.
