A/N: As always all characters will be walking that fine line called OOCness! Yeah, yeah, I know I suck major ass. Sorry! Truth is forgot why I started writing in the first place and now I need to develop that love again. So forgive me, and I'll try to get one chapter updated per week or every two weeks. Be patient with me, please. Excuse the typos!

What She Wants

"Yeah, we just arrived," Inuyasha said into his cell phone. He dropped the two overnight bags he'd managed to grab in the rush to get out of the hospital when the guards had surrounded him and Kagome.

"I've had security sweep the building, four, going on five, times. There's nothing and no one here, who shouldn't be here," Tomo, the head of security guard said from the other end of the phone.

Maybe he was being paranoid, but Inuyasha honestly didn't believe that was the case. After all, how often did a hospital smoke alarm actually, accidentally, go off? In his life time, he couldn't ever remember that happening. Moving through the living room and into the comfortable sized kitchen, he flipped on lights and checked for the essentials he'd asked the house to be stocked with. "Check one more time. As soon as Sesshomaru returns, have him review the tapes."

"Will do," Tomo responded, "But I assure you, there's nothing here. I've been through those tapes a thousand times."

"I doubt that," Inuyasha shot back and added, "Has the package been dropped off?"

"The young lady, Kikyo?"

"Don't say her fucking name," Inuyasha hissed, peering over his shoulder at the front door that stood wide open.

"Sorry, sir. Yes, it was deposited at your residence an hour ago. I have one of my guys standing guard until her story is verified. At which time we'll have her on a plane and out of the country under a new alias."

"And if the story doesn't check out?" He knew what was to take place, but had to make sure the guard knew as well.

"Takahashi-sama will deal with her from that point on."

Inuyasha slipped into the pantry. It was bare with the exception of a case of bottled water and a carton of creamy chicken flavored ramen noodles. He was set for food, but Kagome, Souta, and that damn cat girl, not so much. "Good," he said moving to the refrigerator. "Call me if you have any problems."

"Sir, are you sure you don't want us to know of your location? What if there is an emergency?"

"Need to know, Tomo. Need to know." Inuyasha clicked off the phone and growled, "At least the electricity is on, because they didn't do shit else."

He moved to the bedrooms checking each of them quickly before dialing Souta's cell and advising him and the two guards he'd brought with him that the coast was clear. The guards were totally against him coming in the house and checking without them, but Inuyasha wasn't about to leave Kagome's safety up to anyone but himself, regardless of the fact that she remembered her stupid wolf, but still didn't remember him.

Ashton was the first through the door followed by one of the guards, and then Nola, who he was also against bringing with them. Souta, Kagome and then the final guard entered, his weapon drawn. The first guard moved through the house, rechecking closets, bathrooms, bedrooms, and pantries. Nola settled down on the couch farthest from Ashton. Souta went off to the kitchen and Kagome stood near the door, staring at him.

"Inuyasha, this is a nice place," Souta commented glancing up at the vaulted ceilings.

"Thanks, it belongs to a friend of my mother's." He crossed to the large stone fireplace and pressed a button igniting it. "It doesn't get much use, but I try to keep it up."

"How many bedrooms," Nola asked, her eyes taking in the room slowly from wall to wall.

Inuyasha grinned. "Oh don't you worry, Kitty, you and Souta will not be sharing a room on my watch." He looked at Kagome. "The two of you can bunk together if Kagome's comfortable with that. Souta will get his own room, one room goes to the guards and I'll get the other."

"Not fair!" Nola was on her feet.

Inuyasha knew he was going to be sorry he caved to Souta's reasoning that Kagome would feel more comfortable with another female around. "Too bad."

"Kagome, tell him you don't want to share a room with me. Tell him Souta and I are old enough to sleep in the same room," Nola pleaded as the guard who'd gone searching stepped back into the room.

"I'm going to take first watch outside. Mica, you get some sleep, I'll wake you when it's your turn."

The second the guards vanished to their perspective posts, Nola continued, "Kagome, tell him."

"Ah, I…you two have sex?" Kagome started, her cheeks pinking as she looked from her embarrassed brother to Nola and then to Inuyasha. "I…I don't know what to say. I…Souta…Um"

"The sleeping arrangements stay as it is, Kitty, deal with it." Inuyasha moved around them and into the kitchen for a bottle of water. Stepping back into the living room he caught the tail end of their conversation.

"…dog can't tell me I can't sleep with you. You're my mate for heaven's sake."

"Nola, calm down. This isn't about us. It's about protecting my sister."

"You're my mate, Souta, you're supposed to be on my side. I'm supposed to come first."

"I'm going to pretend you didn't just say that, Nola," Souta said.

"But I am supposed to be first, Souta. I'm not just saying that. As your mate, no one comes before me."

"I know, but given the circumstances do you really think now is the right time to attempt to pull rank?" Souta growled, raking his fingers through his hair.

Inuyasha shook his head and sighed in resignation as he moved to the sliding glass door. He slid it open, allowing Ashton to scamper out into the wooded back yard. "Bring your ass back, mutt, I'm not coming to look for you this time."

Turning back to the living room, he stopped dead. Kagome was a breath away from him. She opened her mouth to speak, but closed it and repeated the process before turning on her heels and shuffling away from him.

"Kagome?" he called moving behind her.

She stopped abruptly, almost like hitting a wall. "Uhmm, which room is mine?" she asked without turning around to face him, her hands fisted at her sides as if she were keeping herself from doing something.

Inuyasha paused, wanting to direct her to his room and his bed, but knowing to do so would only hurt the small amount of progress they had made. "The last door at the end of the hall. I'll be directly across the hall from you should you need anything." She shot forward without another word, disappearing around the corner and out of sight. He heard her door close a second later and chose that moment to follow Ashton outside.

"Inuyasha?" Souta called, stopping him.

He turned to face him. "What is it?"

"She'll remember you," he said pushing to his feet and away from Nola. "Just be patient with her."

"Patience?" Inuyasha laughed, his chest clenching with a need the likes of which he'd never known. "I'm a lot of things, Souta, but I can't claim patient to be one of them."

Souta stared back at him for a long moment, there eyes speaking secrets neither wanted to bring up. "Just don't give up on her."

Inuyasha scoffed and spun away from the man-child. "I may not have any patience but giving up just ain't in my nature runt."

"Good," Souta said, his shoulders visibly relaxing as he closed the distance between them, "Anyway, I should take a watch as well. You know, that whole four eyes are better than two thing."

Inuyasha laughed when he truly felt like breaking something instead. "We're cool out here. Just keep that alley cat of yours quiet. I don't need her getting Kagome riled up for nothing." What he wanted to tell Souta was that in addition to the two guards, they had more sentinels placed strategically around the property. That was, however, need to know.

Souta peered back at Nola and back at Inuyasha. "Look, I love her to death, but if you don't get me away from her for a few minutes I'm going to spray her down with the hose."

Inuyasha chuckled and nodded. He understood with the clarity of an omnipotent shaman what the boy was asking for. A few moments of peace. "Alright, round Ashton up for me."

"Cool," Souta said and was down the back steps and disappearing into the tree line before Inuyasha could blink.

Inuyasha watched him for a moment more before turning and going back into the house. "Oi," he said to Nola, who was flipping through a two year old magazine. "Make yourself useful and fix us something to eat."

She snarled at him, showing off one of her very pointy canines. "Are you sure you want to eat what I cook?"

He snorted and continued past her and into the hallway to his room. Inuyasha paused at Kagome's door and listened. There was no movement at all. It was as if she was holding her breath and refusing to move. "Come back to me Kagome," he whispered softly, his palm brushing over the center of the door.

Simonkal of Inuy

Kagome slide down to the floor after hearing Inuyasha's room door click close. How it was possible, she didn't know, but she'd heard his whispered request as if he were the very blood giving her life. Her heart had sped up, and her soul reached for his, but instead of making her want to open the door and run to him, it left her even more confused.

The brief kiss they'd shared at the hospital kept repeating in her mind. Every time she looked at him, she felt the warmth of his lips against the corner of her mouth and his arms enfolded around her. Even now she could still feel the heat of his lips and it left her yearning for him to do it once more.

Kagome pushed back to her feet. She lifted her suit case to the bed and emptied the contents onto the spread. The sound of Ashton's bark stopped her. She crossed to the window and pulled back the curtains. A smile came to her lips as she watched Souta toss a stick into the woods only to have Ashton race after it. He'd return a few seconds later, lay the stick at Souta's feet and sit and wait for Souta to throw it again.

She blinked and Souta faded to be replaced by Inuyasha. Only he wasn't in the backyard. It was a park, she'd been to before but couldn't really place. In the memory, Inuyasha was doing the same thing except he was doing it with a much smaller Ashton, who wasn't nearly as obedient.

"Inuyasha taught him how to fetch?" she whispered the words, blinked and Souta came back into focus. She continued to stare at her little brother for another long moment not sure what to do with that knowledge. Honestly, it didn't mean anything except she and Inuyasha were friends. But then the kiss after she asked him whether they were more than friends? Did that mean they were together? If that were the case, wouldn't her mother and brother have told her? Wouldn't Inuyasha have told her? Hell, if the tables were reversed, that would've been the first thing she told him when he woke up and she realized he'd had some memory loss. Then again she'd always been possessive when it came to relationships.

The door behind her opened and Kagome turned as Nola slipped into the room. She wasn't sure what to think of the teenager, but Kagome knew Nola loved the hell out of Souta. For now, that would have to be enough.

Nola threw herself across the queen bed. "I seriously despise your boyfriend." She growled, "Who died and made him God?" She sat up in a huff. "He will not stand in the way of me and my mate!"

"Nola, I really don't think that's what Inuyasha is doing," Kagome said, "And for the record he's not my boyfriend. I barely even know him."

Nola stared at her for a long moment without saying anything, and then replied. "Well, memory or no memory, that pompous jerk ass is your boyfriend, Kagome! Do you know he ordered me to the kitchen to cook like I'm some kind of lowly maid?" She sprang from the bed, an evil grin on her face as she paced the small space while rubbing her hands together. "I should cook a special meal just for him. I should do exactly as he ordered me to do." She giggled to herself. "I'll add something special though. That'll teach him a lesson." She spun to Kagome. "Do you have any visine?"

Taking a step back, Kagome replied, "No, I don't. And by the look on your face if I had some I probably wouldn't give it to you."

Nola pouted. "Oh come on! It won't kill him. It'll just teach that ass munch a well-deserved lesson." She took a sinister step toward Kagome. "It's because he's your boyfriend, isn't it? That's why you won't share the eye-drops."

"He's not my boyfriend," Kagome countered, "And I seriously don't think poisoning him and calling him names will solve anything, Nola. I mean would a pompous jerk ass or that other thing you called him, bring strangers to his mother's friend house? Would he protect me like this if he was such a jerk?" Why was she defending Inuyasha? It didn't make any sense, but…it felt like the right thing to do. True she had her own reservations she needed to work through, but he didn't deserve to be called out of his name when since she'd awakened he'd done nothing but help her and her family.

Nola sat down on the bed, her legs crossed Indian style, and a frown on her face. "That's exactly why he is protecting you. You are his girlfriend, as much as I hate to admit it, since this is only going to benefit him. When you went missing, he went crazy, literally. And when they found you, he didn't leave your side for days."

"He went crazy?"

"Yeah," she acknowledged with a nod. "He had a seizure and stuff at your mom's house while you were missing and at the hospital once they found you. When he heard the condition you were in. They had to sedate him. He was a complete mess. I mean he was seriously like a feral dog."

"Sedated? Really?"

"Yep, the way he acted you would've though you two were mates."

"What? Mates?" What the hell was she talking about?

"Yeah, I even thought so for a little while, but you wouldn't have forgotten him if that were true." Nola shrugged. "I guess everyone can't be as lucky as Souta and I."

"Mates? Nola, what are you talking about?"

"Nothing. I'm rambling. Pay me no mind." Nola was quiet for a long moment, a soft smile playing over her face. She pushed off the bed and stepped to the door. "Maybe he's not an ass munch, but he's still bossy and I don't like him." She opened the door, but stopped. "What I am sure of, Kagome is you were in love him and you smiled a lot when you talked about him, so…so for your sake maybe you should try to remember him."

"Nola?" Kagome said, but the younger girl was already out the door and pulling it close behind her. "Try to remember him." The words played in her head.

Hell, it wasn't like she was trying not to remember. She felt fragmented. There were pieces of her life that blended with what her life had become after she moved to Tokyo. Some of it made sense, but most of it didn't. Like, she remembered the break up with Kouga. She hadn't at first, but it came back to her and it was just as painful now as it had been when the initial break up happened. Kouga had ripped her heart out and had handed it back to her without so much as a blink of regret. Had he said jump, she wouldn't have asked how high, she would've just jumped because she was devoted to him. He'd played her in the worse way. She also remembered picking out Ashton, with Sango and her husband, Miroku, but she thought it all was a dream. That was until the big wolf dog had come barreling into her hospital room and leapt up on her bed. What she didn't remember was Inuyasha and it was…he was the one thing she felt even before her talk with Nola, that she needed to remember most.

She gathered up a change of clothes and her bathing supplies. Kagome opened the door and stopped short. Inuyasha was leaving his room too. She backed up as he turned around to face her, pulling the door closed behind him.

"Oi, what's up, wench?" he asked.

It was such a familiar name, she almost smiled, but said instead, "I was about to take a bath." She peered up and down the hallway. "Where is it?"

He looked down at the clothes in her arms, and then back up at her face. "You only take a bath when something's bothering you. So what's up?"

"Nothing," she told him quickly. "I just want…"

He snorted, cutting her off. "Whatever. Use my bathroom." He pushed the door open and stepped aside.

"No, it's fine, I can use the bathroom down the hall. I don't want to put you out or anything."

He rolled his mysterious amber eyes and crossed his arms over his chest. "I insist."

Using his bathroom would leave the other bathroom open for others to use, but would he think because she was using his bathroom that gave him permission to invade on her privacy? "You're not welcomed in the bathroom with me," she said trying to keep her voice from wavering.

He snorted out a laugh and said, "I wouldn't dream of it." He stepped around her and continued, "Go ahead and get your water ran, I'll grab some towels for you." With that he turned and headed down the hall to the other bathroom.

Kagome moved into his room and straight to the bathroom. It was a plain with one sink, but it had a marble garden bath tub that could fit three people. After turning the water on and setting the temperature, she stepped back into the bedroom and waited for Inuyasha to come back with her towels. In the center of the room there was a king-size platform bed sitting up against one wall with two night stands on either side. On each of the night stands a nondescript brass lamp set. Outside of the fact that the room was a little bigger than the one she was sharing with Nola, there really wasn't nothing too special about it.

The sound of the door opening drew her attention and Kagome looked up just in time to see Inuyasha step into the room, towels in hand.

Kagome took the towels from him. "Thanks."

"Let me know if you need anything else."

"Okay." Kagome turned to enter the bathroom but stopped. "Could you not go anywhere?"

Inuyasha stared at her for a long minute. "Ah, yeah. Sure."

"I mean, stay here outside the bathroom, but in the room."

His brows drew together in consternation but he didn't say anything.

Kagome backed into the bathroom, feeling really stupid suddenly. "I'd like to talk to you about a few things and I think the sooner we get it over with the better."

Inuyasha still said nothing, but his eyes never left hers, though his frown did deepen.

"Don't look at me like that, dog boy," she snapped. The minutes the words slipped out, she squeaked and covered her mouth. How dare she talk to him in such a way after everything he had done for her and her family? But it felt so right. "I'm sorry. I didn't-"

Instead of getting angry, Inuyasha snorted out a laugh, his face instantly relaxing. He closed the distance between him and the bathroom, a lopsided grin on his face. "Alright, Wench, you want to talk? Let's talk."

Until Next Time…(.2 cents is greatly appreciated.)
