Chapter One- Long Time Gone

Mark Sloane strolled into Seattle Grace hospital, keeping a confident smile on his face as he prepared to face either his former best friend or the woman he loved, whoever he ran into first. He knew that neither meeting was likely to go well, but he couldn't put it off any longer. He had to have it out with Derek and he had to talk to Addison and try and get her to see that she belonged with.

However, those thoughts vanished when he caught sight of a pretty blonde, who was studying a chart, deep in thought. It had been almost decade since he'd last seen her, but he'd recognize her anywhere. The only question was, what she was she doing here?

It seemed bizarre to him that he had come to Seattle to pursue the woman he loved and had managed to find the woman he had loved and lost too many years before. The woman he had never been able to forget.

Before he could stop himself, he walked up behind her, put his hands on her waist and lifted her off the ground.

"What the Hell?" She demanded angrily, spinning in his arms, her eyes widening in recognition as soon as she saw his face.

"Mark!" She whispered, the color draining out of her beautiful face.

"Hello Merry-girl." Mark said softly, setting her back on her feet. "It's been a long time."

Nine years to be exact. She'd been twenty then and barely more than a girl. It appeared she was all grown up now and more beautiful than ever.

"Still as gorgeous as ever I see."

Meredith just froze and then reached up and slapped him. Hard. "You jackass!" She yelled.

Mark wasn't surprised by the reaction or the slap. After all, he and Merry hadn't exactly parted on good terms and their history was intense and ugly.

Her next reaction did surprise him, though. To his complete and utter amazement, she put her hands on his face and kissed him passionately.

It took Mark only a second to respond, wrapping his arms around her tightly and losing himself in lips that were as sweet as he remembered. It had been nine years since he'd last kissed her, but when their lips met, it felt like no time had passed. Time had passed and he was sure they had both changed, but the chemistry between them remained as powerful as ever.

For a moment he forgot Derek and Addison and the reason he was in Seattle and was just lost in this moment and the woman he'd never been able to forget, no matter how hard he'd tried.

Meredith's mind was going a million miles a minute. Mark was here and she was kissing him. One part of her mind was telling her it was a terrible idea, but her body wasn't listening. She seemed to be operating on pure instinct and had been since the moment she'd locked eyes with him.

First, she'd slapped him, and that had been pure instinct as well. All the hurt and all the rage had just come back in that moment and she couldn't stop herself from letting lose. Just like she hadn't been able to stop herself from kissing him a moment later.

After all this was Mark and after all this time, he was here, in front of her and not just a memory. She hadn't seen him since she was twenty years old, but she'd thought of him many times over the years. Thought about what she'd say and do if she set eyes on him again, but when that moment finally came, all she could do was give into her emotions.

But then, that was how it had always been with Mark. She'd fallen for him, too hard and too fast. She hadn't been able to resist him then and it appeared he still had an effect on her now. But then, that didn't surprise her. After all, it was Mark. Her Mark.

Meredith savoured the kiss, the feel of his hard body against hers. This was her first real kiss since Derek. This wasn't a mindless encounter with some guy she met in a bar, initiated under the influence of too much alcohol. No, this was a real kiss, full of passion and emotion.

Of course, in her entire life, she'd only ever let two men get under her skin and into her heart. Derek and Mark. And they'd both broken her heart. That was one of the reasons why kissing Mark was a bad idea, but Meredith ignored that thought.

She wasn't going to focus on reality or even wonder what the Hell, Mark Sloane, plastic surgeon extraordinaire, was doing in Seattle. She was just going to give into her emotions and savor the feel of being in his arms once more. Reality would intrude soon enough, just like it always did.

Derek got off the elevator, a smile on his face. Today was a good day. He and Addison had had a good morning and he had a challenging case to work on.

His smile disappeared a moment later and he froze in horror, unable to believe what he was seeing. He couldn't, wouldn't, believe his eyes. It seemed impossible to be true, but there it was. Not even ten feet away from him, there was Meredith and she was kissing Mark. His Mark.

This felt like a nightmare, yet he knew he was wide awake. There was a small crowd gathered, watching the kissing couple, but Derek ignored them and reacted with his gut.

He went up and tapped Mark on the shoulder, as soon as the couple came up for air and Mark turned to face him, he was met with Derek's fist in his face.

"Derek!" Meredith screamed, staring at him in horror. "What in the Hell is wrong with you?" She cradled Mark's face in her hands and continued to stare at Derek.

"What's wrong with me?" He demanded angrily. "I should be asking you that. After all, you were the one kissing Mark!"

The horror on Meredith's face was replaced with confusion. "How do you—" She began and then she paled. "Oh no. Mark. This is your Mark, the one who—"

"Slept with my wife, yes." Derek answered flatly. Mark looked pale as well.

"Wait, you're Derek's intern?" He asked Meredith, obviously stunned by the news.

"Afraid so." Meredith told him softly.

Mark let out a curse.

It was Derek's turn to be confused. It seemed like Mark and Meredith knew each other and yet, they seemed to be surprised to learn of their connection to him.

"What's going on?" He demanded. "How do you two know each other?" He had assumed the kiss was for his benefit, to make him jealous, and yet… That didn't seem to be the case, so what was going on?

Mark and Meredith exchanged a long look that Derek couldn't decipher.

"He's my ex-husband." Meredith said finally, her voice oddly flat, and Derek felt the bottom drop out of his world.
