Disclaimer: I do not and will not ever own Avatar: The Last Airbender
A/N: I've been on a writing kick so expect more Toko out of me and even some Kataang, perhaps a little Sukka or Tylokka as well.
Toph had never been so nervous in her life. Her palms were damp and sweat was collecting on her forehead, her toes clenched and then unclenched, pulling up dirt making her feet even more dirty than they already were. Why was she so nervous? She had faced bigger things than this. She had defeated everyone at Earth rumble, escaped from a metal cage by her former teacher and Xin Fu, taught the Avatar earthbending, and helped defeat the Fire Nation. This should be a peace of cake, but it wasn't. Toph was so used to fighting she lacked in social skills, normally it was attack first, ask questions later. Besides, this particular meeting determined the rest of her life and for Toph that was a big deal.
A familiar face walked out of the small house and the steady beat of his heart helped ease the tension within her. She had never felt him so calm and relaxed, even after he was placed on the throne and everything seemed right. It was obvious this person was very important to him. He walked behind her and placed his hands on her shoulder. But why wouldn't they? He had told her how close he had been to his mother and how traumatic it was to lose her. Now that he found her, that piece that always seemed to be missing was now in place. Creating serenity within the prince that had been rare in earlier years. Now at 24, he had blossomed into a wonderful man, friend, and Fire Lord.
"Don't worry, she'll love you," He murmured.
Toph resisted the urge to snort at the remark. It wasn't that she didn't believe him, it was just she knew how these royal types were and was expecting his mother to want better for her son than some earthbender. Perhaps she would be different though, like Iroh and Zuko.
"Of course, what is there not to love?" She retorted sarcastically.
She heard him chuckle and couldn't help the small smile that graced her lips. Taking a deep breath, the prodigy earthbender proceeded to walk through the door into the small home of the former Fire Lady, Princess Ursa. Her heart was pounding in her chest and was surprised that no one could hear it in the quiet of the room. She then felt movement, much lighter than those of Zuko's steps, approach her and then stop. Toph waited a moment before Zuko spoke first.
"Mother, this is Toph, my fiancée."
