Love is…

Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous, or conceited, or proud; love is not ill-mannered, or selfish, or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs; love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. Love never gives up: its faith, hope and patience never fail.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

That is a beautiful passage from the Bible, however, after witnessing the courtship of Lily and James, I'm going to have to disagree with it, because it was nothing like this.

Love is patient and kind; Lily is, for the most part, one of the most patient and kind people I know, whether she was tutoring her peers, assisting in captaining the Quidditch team, or helping the first years find their way around Hogwarts. But when it came to James Potter, Lily was patient and kind for about the first three days she knew him.

love is not jealous, or conceited, or proud; To the people who know James well- Need I say more? To everyone else- Throughout our years at Hogwarts, James was generally a very happy person, that is, until Ms. Evans here, or should I say Mrs. Potter, went and got herself a boyfriend. James became a moody, jealous git and moped around for ages until we finally sabotaged, I mean, er, that boy decided Lily just wasn't really his type. Anyways the point is he was jealous. As for the conceited and proud bit- we were very fond of ourselves back in school, and James made a point of being extra conceited around his beloved, a fact she despised at the time.

love is not ill-mannered, or selfish, or irritable; As teenage boys we were all a little ill-mannered and selfish, but hey using profanity, and burping were wonderful ways to get attention- Can you blame us? Needless to say Lily was forever irritated with us for it.

love does not keep a record of wrongs; On the contrary, I know for a fact that Lily kept a running count of all the stupid things James had done in the time that they have known each other. Pranks pulled: 348, Times asked me (Lily that is) out: 493, Times set own hair on fire: 47, Detentions served: 215, and the list goes on and on and on.

love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. Lily was certainly very happy every time something "evil" happened to James. She could always be seen smiling a little wider if she had beaten James in class that day, or if someone had stood up to his bullying.

Love never gives up: its faith, hope and patience never fail. The one part I agree with. James however conceited and jealous he may have been truly loves Lily, believe me, I know, I've had to endure seven years of him whining about it, and her never gave up on her no matter how many times she turned him down. And Lily may have been irritable and impatient at first but when she gave James a chance, they fell in love. It may have been an unorthodox relationship at first, but never have I met two people so perfect for each other and so in love with each other. To James and Lily, may you lead long, happy, healthy lives full of love- whatever love may be…
