Part 120
Starbuck knew asking his father about his past dealings was not going to be fun. However he had to admit if anyone in the colonies knew of a deal or a deal maker his old man was likely to be that person or he had been. Of course things may have changed but it was still worth looking into. Starbuck found it highly ironic that humanities survival might well rest in the hands of those many considered the lowest of the low. Then again had not the ancients depended on such people as well. Were they really all that different then the first space faring men and women who left Kobal all those yearns ago? That thought eased his mind and raised his spirits as he when to find his father. He just hoped he would not be in the middle of a card game else he'd have a long wait to speak to him.
SSSSSSSSSSSSS
Colonel Dancer knew knew his old friend was not happy with him. He clearly did not want to talk about their less then honorable deals to keep humanity safe. However it was a viable way to get the needed supplies. Who cared if it cost them a few treasures. Those paled in comparison to feeding their children. Dancer loved art as much as the next person but, really an old painting or three could be exchanged for either currency or supplies to save humanity that was the bottom line. Besides when humans won they could always buy back their master pieces because valuable artifacts were always bought and traded. It might cost them but, then if humanity really wanted to gain its history and thrive then it would be worth it.
"There was no reason to explain we have been dealing with pirates and raiders."
"Respectfully that is bull, they need to know. Plus we don't want them shooting our allies." The dark look made him sigh "Ok our trading partners."
"It was ill advised we could end up under the jail."
Dancer laughed and said."I highly doubt it as we saved human life. I think Commander Adama would call it a fair trade."
Decker snorted at that. He still hated Adama for leaving even if a part of him did understand and would have done the same. Hell maybe that was the problem; he would have fled but unlike the Caprican Seal holder he would have only taken his ship and crew had he had one at the time. He sighed and pushed his hair back his head now pounding it hurt to think of all the losses all the back room deals. "Perhaps, however, I still do not trust them all. I will agree some were decent enough for not being human but, I cannot help but feel some were just out to take an advantage."
Dancer chuckled and said."How many human traders did the same? Plus I know our own were not overly kind when Hazari and even Delphi fell. Tragedy brings out the both the best and worst in all sentient beings. I mean Baltar was human remember, he betrayed us all."
"Fair point; but at least Adama found some allies; human too. I admit being glad Cain is back though I wonder why he did not return sooner and learning of the Rycon well that ship returning is even more of a miracle. Maybe I can almost forgive him for that."
Dancer smiled and knew that his friend had found a cousin alive on the Rycon and that had helped him feel some hope as his cousin had sealed and had a child who was now a warrior. It gave Colonel Decker hope his family would survive which made him want to fight harder.
"Yeah, Kronos would be proud. I guess we stand and fight using every trick we have."
Decker nodded "We will, let's go see about contacting some pirates er, free traders."
Dancer laughed and followed his friend to their ship. Hope was a delicate thing and he was grateful they both had it once more.

Chameleon could not quite believe what Starbuck was asking. However given the deal that landed him with Siress Bellame he could not really complain that it was out of order. Hell he actually liked that deal. The woman was a lady and he would shoot anyone who said otherwise but damn she was just about perfect for him. He still thanked the Lords that Adama was such a fool.
"Well Starbuck I would try contacting the Gemons trading group. I would bet they survived. The thing is I was never good at their codes. You would need someone who knew them and that they might trust. Look I dealt with them third hand on occasions but never first hand. I always had a middle man. They are really not bad sorts. Hard traders to be sure but honest enough and they are good people. I know they often took in orphans which is why I dealt with them sometimes. I help some younger kids find work that was relatively honest. I know they had other contacts with differing races. They were well respected."
"So no idea who to ask to help we need this badly."
Starbuck's felt a pang then sighed. Hopefully Cassie would forgive him this. "I would ask you lady. Cassiopeia once told me her father was a Gemmon trader. Now I don't think he was one of the group of free traders but maybe, maybe they used similar codes?"
Starbuck frowned then wanted to hit himself. He recalled his beloved telling him that a few yearns back.
"Yeah come to think of it, she did mention it and it helped us save some people. Ok I'll go ask her. Thanks, ah I appreciate the help and support."
"No problem son." Chameleon proud to have helped maybe a little and if it helped his son appreciate that blonde beauty even more well maybe he would get some grandchildren out of the deal. Fair trade really, besides if he had grandchildren for Bellame to spoil she might let up on him a bit, he loved her dearly but her trying to make him respectable and honest was a bit much a times.
