It's been forever since I updated this, so I hope there are still some folks reading it. I'm doing the mini_wrimo thing over at LiveJournal, so I decided that this time, I want to try to finish this story. Standard disclaimers apply. I hope you enjoy this.

Bobby walked out to nurse's station and asked to speak to Sam's doctor. He was twisting his cap in his hands nervously. They usually bring people with bone injuries into surgery right away, so there had to be something worse that was being kept from them.

"What's wrong?" She asked him, quickly pulling up Sam's chart.

"He said the pain in his wrist is getting worse. Can you give him something?" Bobby demanded. He knew the emergency room doctors were supposed to treat for pain and Sam being in this much pain probably meant that he wasn't given anything.

The doctor took a deep breath and looked like she was contemplating an answer. After a few moments of silence, she motioned with her hand and said, "Let me show you his brain scans."

She brought him into a darkened room where there were images of Sam's brain. "We ran a CT scan and an MRI to see the extent of the swelling. It's mild, so we're hoping that it will go down on its own with time. We've given him medication to keep his blood pressure up, but for right now, giving him pain medication would be dangerous. Also, as you can imagine, taking him into surgery wouldn't be safe, either. While the wrist is a concern, we're more focused on his brain right now."

Bobby wiped a hand across his face, feeling overwhelmed. They hadn't been getting the whole story, but now, he didn't want the whole story. "Is... does the blindness have anything to do with his brain injury?"

"Yes. The fact that he can see shapes tells us that he's not entirely blind and will probably regain full sight. This part of the brain," she pointed to the center of the back of Sam's brain. "The occipital lobe, is responsible for vision. That's being effected by the swelling."

Bobby nodded, swallowing back the panic that he felt bubbling over. "Like I said, we don't expect the blindness to be permanent. The best thing we can do right now is wait, keep watch over his symptoms, and hope that he gets better overnight. As soon as the swelling goes down, we'll bring him into surgery for the wrist and keep him comfortable with pain meds. Any other questions?"

"No. Thank you." He shook his head and stumbled down the hall to Sam's room. He stood outside of Sam's room for a few minutes, listening to the boy's talk peacefully, Dean speaking in hushed tones, before he decided to go back into the room. Dean was sitting in a chair across the room from Sam and Caleb was sitting close by his bed. Sam still had his wrist clutched to his chest and it broke Bobby's heart a little that he would need to keep suffering for a while. It looked like he was getting drowsy, though, so maybe he could just go to sleep for a while.

"Are they going to give him something?" Dean asked as soon as he spotted Bobby.

"No... Caleb, come talk with me." Caleb got up and started to leave the room with him. He wasn't surprised when Dean didn't follow.

"What's wrong?" Caleb asked, eyes as worried as Bobby felt.

"His brain's swelling. The doc said it wasn't that bad, but it's what's effecting his vision and it's why he can't have pain meds and why they're not taking him to surgery. She said she was concerned about keeping his blood pressure up. Dean's not going to take this very well."

"No, he's not. If his brain is swelling, should we be letting him go to sleep?" Caleb asked, putting together that Sam was drowsy with the fact that he had a head injury.

"Probably not."

They walked back to the room and saw Dean standing next to the bed, one hand rubbing through Sam's hair, his face twisted with regret. Sam had fallen asleep, and Dean was taking the time to reflect. He sighed deeply and sat down next to his brother, grabbing onto one hand. "Dean? How long has he been asleep?"

"A couple of minutes. He nodded off right after you guys left. I think he was already falling asleep when you left." Dean's turned around and was instantly on alert.

Bobby went over to the other side of the bed and started shaking Sam. "Sammy! Come on! Wake up!" Sam's response was sluggish at best, but he opened his eyes and whined a little. "Are you with me?"

Sam nodded and asked "Why wouldn't I be?" Bobby sighed and sat in the chair that Caleb had vacated.

"There's some stuff you need to know."
