A/N: First X-Men story. It's a one-shot. I don't know why, but I've had sort of a fear of writing an X-Men story. So…here's hoping this turns out well! I'm not sure if Logan turned out a little OOC here, but remember—first x-men story.

Disclaimer: Don't own Logan, Rogue, X-Men, or checkers. I own the story though. And that's about it…

Logan stared at the multicolored haired girl before him with a scowl.

"Take a little longer with that move, why don't you..."

"Shush, I'm thinking." She lifted her hand and held it wavering over a checker piece before quickly lowering it again.

"Kid," Logan growled impatiently. "It's a goddamn checkers game. Just make a move."

"I want to make a good move, Logan. Geeze, hold your horses."

The older man rolled his eyes and held his head in his hands. His elbows were resting on the tables and he kept his gaze on the younger girl ahead. She was going to lose. That Logan knew. Although the older man was known for being rough and tough, no one ever beat him at checkers.

Ever.

With a sigh, Marie finally picked up a checker and moved. Without even thinking twice, Logan picked up one of his pieces and jumped hers.

"Why don't we call it quits, kid? We know I'm going to win."

Marie shook her head, concentrating on the board once again. The lighting in the room was perfect, and Logan hated it. Marie was absolutely breathtaking. If only he could reach forward and push that strand of hair back behind her ear...

No, Logan. Knock it off. You know she can't touch you. Even if she could...

Would she want to?

If only she would hurry this game up. It was her idea. Lately, he'd been a little distant. Why should he get closer if he was starting to recognize his feelings for her? Of course, Marie had noticed and asked him to spend time with her. He wasn't about to say no, but he knew to keep his distance as well.

Straightening her back, she picked up a checker with a new air of confidence. She jumped over five of Logan's pieces, finishing the game.

She looked up at him, smiling. He stared at her in shock; not because she had won, but because he'd never seen her look so…

Stunning.

"I thought you said no one ever beat you at checkers." Marie asked, smiling.

"Apparently, I was mistaken." Logan answered, sporting a smirk of his own.

The girl rose from her chair, walked over to him and placed a small peck on his cheek. She knew something as small and as innocent as that couldn't hurt him.

"Thanks for the game, Logan." With that, she left the room. Logan's eyes followed her. Placing a hand on his cheek, he sighed in frustration.

He knew he couldn't have her.

So why did he still want her?
