A/N: Just a quick little oneshot I thought of. Quick warning, it's a little ooc and a teensy bit AU, but just bear with me.
Heroes And Villains
"Show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy." F. Scott Fitzgerald
Do you know why were so wrapped up in superheroes? Following their stories in comics and cartoons, even movies. We love them, dwell upon them, and wish to be them. To be a hero, the greatest of honors; a respected position in the community.
Bullshit.
Being a hero takes guts, to face down unimaginable horrors, to stare in the face of death. But to give up your life for someone else, there's the rub. You see, there are billions of people in the world, just ready for someone to swoop down and take advantage of them. That's where heroes come in. Protect the innocent, rescue the weak.
Again, I must reiterate: Bullshit.
Heroes have very shitty lives. Mistreated, overlooked, downtrodden and just pathetically sad. Beaten up, thrown around, heroes get broken more then civilians do. Have their hearts broken way to many times to count.
I tried the hero way, once. Tried the villain way once, too. Decided the best way to live was my way, and this is who I am now.
Red X. Shadow thief of the night. Pleased to make your acquaintance.
So yes, I am neither hero nor villain, nor am I an insignificant civilian. I am a master thief, a magician of breaking and entering, stealing what I want. It satisfies me on some level, to be above the bickering chaos of the moral world.
Morals. Idiotic things those are, it's survival of the fittest and I am the alpha wolf.
So maybe I have to give up a few creature comforts, like family and friends. Don't need anyone to care about me, but myself. Don't need a relationship either, sex is easy enough to come by, just walk past any dark street corner in the city. You can get any perverse pleasure you want.
I never ask for much. I don't want power or to rule the world. That is way too much stress for me. I like excitement, adrenaline, the front lines. Who the hell would want anything else?
I just take what I need, scare the guards, maybe get in a little fight with Chuckles The Wonder Boy. That's really all I want. No flashy political statement, no desire to rule the world.
I'm not a hero. I'm not a villain. I'm Red X.
