Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto. Be happy.

Everything was red. His eyes, his hands, his clothes. It took him awhile to realise that no, not everything was red. His eyes weren't red, not anymore. They were the black he hadn't seen in years. Black and lifeless and his brother's blood was on his hands. And did killing him, killing his brother make Sasuke any better than Itachi.

He laughed bitterly and wondered how -why- it all began.

O

Sasuke flew backwards into a tree and groaned as he got up. Orochimaru was brutal, even worse than Kakashi had been just before the chunin final exams. But he couldn't think of the past. Not when the past brought him memories of Naruto's blood seeping through his fingers, not when he could almost regret coming to the Sound and to Orochimaru. Instead he shoved any images out of his head and focused on red eyes in the distance, so like his own. Red eyes he would have to kill to finally be free.

"Stop daydreaming Sasuke or I will kill you," and then Orochimaru's kunai is stuck in the tree behind him, where his head had been seconds ago and all thoughts save survival left his mind.

O

hate loathe despise. He had, just like Itachi had told him to and now his brother was just in front of him, only a few feet away. He hardly heard himself talking, his voice seemed to come from a distance. Then crack his wrist was broken, chidori deflected but he didn't feel it, not really. He went throught the motions, gasped in pain at the right moments but the real Sasuke was still at the end of the corridor, watching Itachi destroy his body until it -he-was slammed against the wall and forced to remember the horrified confusion from when he watched the blood of his, their, parents drip down the blade.

Then he started to scream.

O

"My dream, well it's not a dream, more of an ambition, is to kill a certain man." Kakashi didn't look surprised but with his mask in the way would Sasuke even be able to tell the difference? And why would he be surprised? Everyone expected Sasuke to kill or at least want to kill Itachi. But only he knew that this was the first time he'd said his ambition to others. Somehow saying it aloud made it more concrete and he knew he could and would never take back his vow.

Sasuke felt something die –perhaps hope- inside him.

O

When Sasuke first saw his parents' bodies, he thought more about the fact that they weren't moving, then that Itachi was standing over them with a bloody katana. He knew Itachi was capable of killing and that mother and father would someday die but he couldn't connect the two ideas in his mind. So what if Itachi had a weapon his hand, he'd probably taken it from the real murderer. Itachi couldn't have killed them.

Then his brother looked into his eyes and the sharingan turned wrong, shattering his hope into sharp pieces of glass. And everything turned red until he was drowning in it and there was nothing else.

O

"I want to be just like you, aniki!" Itachi smiled and poked Sasuke in the forehead.
