In the beginning, Hakkai would cry in his sleep.

Gojyo would lie awake on the floor, listening to the grown man in his bed sob with heartbreaking clarity. And the next morning he would go on like nothing happened; ignoring the tearstained pillow case, and the red rims around his roommate's eyes.

They would play cards during the day when Hakkai was still too frail to be allowed out of bed. Gojyo would attempt to cook something edible for his invalid patient.

In later days, when the doctor allowed Hakkai to exert himself a little more, Gojyo would take him on walks through town, making sure that he wasn't jostled or bumped into by anyone.

After a month or so, Hakkai began to sleep peacefully through the night. No longer would Gojyo be pulled from his sleep by muffled sobs. And yet he continued to sleep next to the bed in a sitting position, resting his head against the mattress.

Years later when they traveled west with Sanzo and Goku, Sanzo had commented about it; whenever they only had one or two beds, Gojyo, even if he fell asleep laying flat on the floor, would wake sitting up against Hakkai's bed, arm outstretched towards the other man.

Gojyo would laugh it off, saying that he was just making sure that Hakkai hadn't gone and kicked it during the night and undone all the care he had put into practically raising the man from the dead.

Hakkai would just smile serenely and announce that they should have breakfast and be on their way before the day was wasted.

When they returned from the west, all bearing a few new scars from their halting of Gyumaoh's resurrection, Hakkai and Gojyo returned to the town they had left, Sanzo and Goku returning to the Temple of the Setting Sun.

On their first night back, when Gojyo had gone to lie on the floor next to the bed, Hakkai had laughed and said, "I think we're beyond that by now, aren't we?"

Gojyo had bristled, assuming the other man was finally sick of him hovering as he slept. As he turned to leave the room, prepared to sleep on the living room couch, he felt a cool hand close around his wrist and tug him off balance and onto Hakkai's reclined form.

Startled, Gojyo just stared down into emerald eyes that danced with laughter.

"What, do I have to start crying again to get your attention?" The brunet joked.

Gojyo finally regained his senses and grinned rakishly, shifting his body so that he was lying fully over the smaller man beneath him.

"Well in that case…" he trailed off as he kissed Hakkai gently, taking his time exploring the warm mouth beneath his. When he finally pulled back for air, they were both breathing heavily and Hakkai's hands were twined tightly in Gojyo's crimson locks.

When Hakkai finally gathered enough air to speak coherently he said breathily, "You're slow."

At that, Gojyo burst out laughing and tucked his head into the crook of Hakkai's neck. His body shook with the force of his mirth. As it subsided he replied in a choked voice, "I'll be sure to make up for lost time…"

Hakkai was pleased to note that the redhead kept his promise faithfully, and with great enthusiasm.
