Last Song
"...they twinkle
The far stars of gold"
"Again?" Eriol murmured groggily as he slowly sat up in his satin sheets. The large ornate grandfather clock in the house chimed distantly two times, and Eriol reached over to his nightstand for his glasses. After placing them on his nose, he ran a pale hand through his hair. And listened.
It was that voice again.
When had it begun? A haunting voice raised in melody, but only in the darkest hours of the night. A beautiful voice singing lyrics that sounded so familiar… It had begun a few weeks ago when Eriol's heart was freshly wounded. The bitter pain of Kaho leaving him had driven him mad. One of the most constant and soothing things in his life had disappeared, and nothing could fix that. Maybe it was because of the centuries he had lived through. Maybe it was because life's pleasures had grown so dull. Maybe it was just that a woman's touch appeared rarely to a man like him. Now that Sakura was the strongest sorceress in the modern world, his role was diminished and there was little to distract him from his infinite loneliness.
And it was then that the angelic singing voice descended upon earth.
The first time he heard it was during one of his late night spells. He was drinking and smoking heavily at a nearby bar, having become quite familiar to the locals. The smoke had once made him nauseous (and besides, she hated it), but it was now very comforting to him.
With a concerned look, the elderly bartender shoo'ed Eriol outside, knowing that he lived within walking distance in that creepy mansion on the edge of town.
"You ought to sober up and get yer life together. Yer just a young lad," The bartender sighed and closed the door, leaving Eriol with those well-meaning words.
Eriol snorted drunkenly, leaning on a lamp post. Young lad. Right. Even looking a few hundred years younger than I actually am, didn't convince Kaho.
He began walking in the wrong direction from his house, but then he heard a pleasing melody in the still of the late night cold air.
"In the sleepless night,
I sing this song alone"
Eriol was so heavily intoxicated that he didn't think to investigate with his magical senses. Without further caution, he walked towards the sound of the singing. Everytime he thought he was getting closer, the singing seemed to trail off. Then after a few minutes, it started again, albeit in a slightly different direction. Before long, Eriol found himself at the front steps of his house. That was where Ruby Moon and Spinel Sun found him in the morning.
As fuzzy as that memory was, Eriol knew without a doubt that this must be the same singer. The naturally smooth soprano could not be mistaken with any other. Eriol would not make the same mistake as he had the first time. Putting on his robe and quietly summoning his wand, he spread his senses out, letting it roam through the landscape, looking for any sign of life.
"Together with the blowing wind,
I fly riding on my thoughts"
There. He quickly ran down the stairs and out the front door, ignoring the icy cold that hit him as he walked outside. There was someone, in the park right beyond his house. Eriol trudged through the snow, searching through the gently falling snow. He saw no one.
Then, a feather appeared on the ground in front of Eriol. He bent down and picked it up. It was delicate and incredibly soft to the touch. He looked around again, but it was in vain. In his haste to find the singer, he realized that the singing had stopped. Sighing, Eriol decided that she must have finished singing and left.
The next morning dawned and Eriol felt much more refreshed than he had in a long time. He sat in his grand dining hall sipping a cup of coffee, chatting with Spinel Sun when he suddenly heard it. The angel's voice that had healed him from his heartbreak.
"The same color as the wild rose
that was blooming in my dream last night"
Abandoning his coffee, Eriol rushed out the door into the winter wonderland of the street and there she was. She stood there, a soft smile on her face as she sang, sang as if it were the only thing left for her to do. Long violet hair cascaded down her back, ending in curly ringlets. She was dressed in a simple white dress despite the early morning chill.
"In the gentle night,
I sing this song alone
Let me sing with you tomorrow
Riding the wings of dreams"
Eriol's eyes widened as he realized who he was looking at. Being a non-magician, why was she emanating such a presence...?
"D-Daidouji-san?" Eriol whispered in disbelief, "What are you doing here?"
She didn't answer him, only continued to sing, her voice soaring through the air.
"You must be cold," Eriol tried again, "why don't you come inside?"
Again, no reaction. Eriol was starting to get suspicious but his concerns all melted away, listening to her melodious voice.
"In the gentle night,
I sing this song alone
Let me sing with you tomorrow
Riding the wings of dreams"
Tomoyo stopped singing. Eriol stood there, clapping and thoroughly charmed. She only looked at him with mesmerizing lavender eyes.
"What a surprise to be meeting you here," Eriol smiled. He hadn't known her very well and never kept in contact with her after he had returned to England. How strange of her to come to him, alone and unanounced…
"Yes, Hiiragizawa-kun," Tomoyo finally spoke, "I'm glad to be able to see you."
"Oh, is that so?" Eriol said, puzzled that she wanted to see him of all people. Why wasn't she in Japan with Sakura and everyone else…?
In that moment, the town clock chimed and Eriol looked up to see that it was seven 'o clock. Tomoyo looked up as well, and directed an apologetic smile at Eriol while saying, "I'm very glad to have been able to see you. I'm happy you liked my song… but I need to go now."
"Ah, you are a very talented singer, Daidouji-san," Eriol replied, "Your voice is so soothing."
Tomoyo smiled demurely, "I'm glad you think so. Good bye, Hiiragizawa-kun." And with that, she walked away, leaving bare footprints in the snow.
"Good bye… Daidouji-san," Eriol said, feeling a little sad. He hardly acknowledged the strange situation he just encountered her in. Maybe it was selfish, but he wanted some titillating company in his large house. His guardians were his own creations after all, with little will of their own.
Eriol looked up suddenly, wanting her to come back. He desperately wanted her there, maybe she could relieve the coldness that inhabited every room no matter how many warmth spells he cast.
But she was gone.
Eriol looked around in wonder and searching with his powers, but even her footprints were gone. Rubbing his arms a bit, he turned around and went back inside his house.
He decided to call Sakura. Maybe she could tell him about Tomoyo's slightly strange behavior.
"H-hello?" Sakura's voice answered, subdued and obviously full of tears.
"Sakura-san? What's the matter?" Eriol asked. But it hit him right at that moment. He knew… he knew the exact words that would come out of her mouth.
"Tomoyo-chan… Tomoyo-chan just died," Sakura barely whispered into the phone, "She had been in a coma for weeks after she fainted during a concert. It was during her last s-so..." Sakura suddenly burst into tears and Eriol could hear Syaoran consoling her in the background.
Eriol slid into a chair, nearly dropping the phone. How typically selfless of Tomoyo Daidouji to show up to comfort someone when she was the one who needed help the most.
But, at the very least... someone heard her finish her last song.

[REVISED 2017, formerly Yoru no uta]
A/N: Well, I first wrote this fic when I was in uh... middle school. I've thought about trashing it, but after re-visiting it, I decided to take out some of the cringier stuff and convey my cheesy, naive, original intent to the best of my (not much improved) writing ability.
What can I say... it's fluff I wanted to write in middle school and seeing as ExT is rare enough as it is, I decided to let it exist as a quick read for anyone interested. :D
