Chasing Sunset

Another year gone by, Henry.
We still remember.

Along the deck in golden brown,
The mist sprays up then comes back down,
Sounds of sheet upon the wind,
The lolling ocean speaks again,
The keel comes down and waves are met,
As on into the evening stands,
The men upon her planks do wait,
As she chases sunset.

The fires are stoked and on she glides,
Faster still she seems to fly,
Though sails still hold upon her masts,
They do not seem long to last,
The keel cut through on waves it met,
As on into the evening stands,
Passengers upon her decks do wait,
As she chases sunset.

The funnels lose their steam and smoke,
The steel hull parting the water stroke,
No sails to raise or listen to,
No ropes to pull or labor to do,
The bow sliced through the waves it met,
As on into the evening stands,
The officer upon her deck does wait,
As she chases sunset.

The bow goes down so very fast,
The ship does not have long to last,
As she sinks down by the head,
Leaving so many floating dead,
The ship succumbed to the waves it met,
As on into the morning stands,
The officer does his duty hard,
And he will never again see sunset.
