When Queen Zelda dreams, she sometimes dreams that she's Sheik.

She dreams of the time when she assumed his identity and gender, when they hid from Ganon those seven years, lying in wait for the Hero of Time to come, and tried to survive the best they could.

She dreams of all the troubled people they met, how there were some they could help and some they could not, and how sometimes there seemed to be no hope whatsoever for their beautiful land of Hyrule.

She dreams of the happiness they felt when the Hero of Time came back, of the satisfaction of guiding him and seeing him right the things gone horribly wrong the past seven years, of the fear they felt when he was injured in battle.

When Queen Zelda dreams, she sometimes dreams that she and Sheik are two different people.

She dreams of the distinct feeling of lying within him while he played the harp and guided their Hero, of hearing him say things she never in her life would think to utter, and of hearing the silence she never would have thought to allow happen.

She dreams of never actually once meeting him, but feeling like she's known him forever, like he had always been there as much of a part of her as she was him.

She dreams of the time when she felt separated from him after she revealed him to be her in front of the Hero of Time, how lonely and awkward she felt without him even though she knew he was right there with her the entire time.

When Queen Zelda dreams, she sometimes dreams of the dreams she had when she was Sheik.

She dreams of her father, her mother, Impa, Ganondorf, and Link, and of all the people she's ever met in her life, all the people she's ever loved and despised; she remembers he dreamed of them all.

She dreams of the memories she had of growing up, of being a young and curious child who was reprimanded far too often for being too un-ladylike and tomboyish, of Impa caring for her and letting her be who she naturally was without encouragement or restraint, of meeting that little boy from the forest that fateful day with the fairy around his head; she remembers he dreamed of them all.

She dreams of the terrible weight she carried on her shoulders as a young child because of her dreams that her father wouldn't listen to, because there was a bad man charming the kingdom, because she knew she was right; she remembers he dreamed of them all.

When Queen Zelda awakes, she sometimes wonders if she has really been Sheik dreaming he's Zelda her entire life.
