Ch1: Demons Can't Cry

It was a beautiful Mother's Day that found the guys at the park. Hiei was in a tree and the others sat below it. "So Kuwabara, watcha doin' for Mom's Day?" Yusuke yawned. He didn't get an answer; the red headed baka was asleep. Ok then...What about you, Hiei?" asked Yusuke. "Hn. Pathetic ningen holidays are not worth my time." was the reply. "Figures..."

Kurama had been unusually silent the whole time. Yusuke threw a pinecone at him. "Yo fox-boy, what's up with you?" he asked. Kurama just sighed and stood up. Walking away, he said "I'll see you later."

"Kurama's going to tell Suichi's mother the truth." explained Hiei quietly. He was so glad he wasn't in Kurama's position. "Oh...good luck to him..." Yusuke had no idea how much luck Kurama would need.

Kurama's Mother's House

[A/N: We'll just call her mom! ;]

"Mom, I'm home!" Kurama called. "In here sweetie." He went to her bedroom to find her still in bed. "yawn I just woke up." she said, smiling. Kurama felt his chest tighten. 'Think of it this way,' said a voice in his head. 'demons can't cry.' "Happy Mother's Day, mother." Kurama said outloud. He sat in a chair next to her bed. Mom smiled and patted his hand. He caught sigth of those 9 year old scars on her hand, and the tightness increased. He drew back his hand.

"Mother, I have to tell you something." Kurama started. "What is it, dear?" asked Mom. Kurama took a deep breath. "I am not really...Suichi." he said. ".....I don't understand." she whispered. "To you, I am Suichi. But...15 years ago, I was a Youko, a fox spirit." Mom tilter her head, still confused. Kurama inhaled again, and continued. "One night, I got shot by a bounty hunter. I had just enough strength to possess a souless embryo." "And you possessed..." Mom trailed off and Kurama nodded.

"I possessed Suichi. I meant to leave sooner...but after Dad died and the day you got those scars..." he gestured at Mom's hands. "...I just...couldn't..." Kurama bent his head, ashamed of the secret he had kept for so long. His chest had constricted so much, he felt like he was going to explode. A hand was placed on his shoulder, and he looked up. His mother's face was as kind as ever, but Kurama noticed the worry lines around her eyes and on her forehead. "Let me see..Youko." she asked softly. Kurama frowned. "Are you sure?" Mom nodded. "You are still my son. If you weren't, you would've left me. But you didn't. And I'm curious to see what my son REALLY looks like." Kurama sighed. "As you wish."

Standing, he concentrated. 'Alright Youko, come out.' he thought. There was a brief flash [A/N: cough], and Youko replaced Kurama. His silver hair settled from changing and his tail flicked with joy at being free. Mom was quiet, apparently shocked a bit. Hey, she should be. When she spoke, she said "You may of possessed Suichi, but now you ARE Suichi. I love you, and you will always be my son." She held out her arms to him, and his chest was like a dam breaking.

'Demons can't cry...' Kurama thought. But as he flung himself at his mother, and changed back into Kurama, tears fell from his green eyes. Hugging his mother, he thought 'Demons can't cry, but I'm not a demon. I'm Suichi, Kurama, Youko.'
