What possessed him to come here?
Severus had wanted to warn them, to help; maybe even save the one he loved. Yet here he was, standing hidden by an invisibility cloak watching her die. With two words and all the hatred that monster could muster, she was taken away from him in a flashing green light. Voldemort had murdered her.
He sank to the floor quietly, her pleading for her child's life, her begging for him to take her own (Why Lily, why?), her scream of pure fright and agony were still ringing fresh in his ears; tormenting him. Tears ran down his pale pointed face and yes he could cry; he was Snivellus after all, but he refused to allow his heartache to be heard, if only because he life depended on it. He fiercely dug his nails into his palms to hush the sobs which demanded to be released from his body, but also to punish himself. He needed to focus on any pain, but the pain in his heart. His hazy dark eyes focused on the sight before him. Lily, her face frozen, just as he had been seconds before, in shock, in pain, in the moment of both their deaths; hers truly, his figuratively.
There was another green flash and the screaming of a young child. Severus covered his ears at the ungodly sound. He couldn't stand hearing the agony that child was feeling. Harry… that was it's name and that damned Potter had been it's father. It should have been him, he thought bitterly.
But that didn't matter now.
Crying… the child was still crying. Confused, he gazed up to find his foe and once master gone.
What had happened?
Severus got up and paused at the body of Lily, his Lily. He crouched down and ran his thumb over her still warm cheek, just as he had always wished to. He never dreamt the first and last time he would do that would be at her death. He leaned down and placed a hard painful kiss on her slightly parted lips. The sobs escaped him now, racking his body like never before. The truth coursed through his mind and heart, all the way down to his trembling hands. Lily would never be his, he would never be hers and she would never know how much he truly cared.
Getting up, he glanced at the howling child and felt the need to reach out and calm him, but he didn't. He drew his hand back as if the child were a flame that would burn him As much as he loved Lily, he just couldn't do it. Because as much as he loved her, he hated James. James… Lily… Lily and James, that is what this child represented.
Turning, Snape wrapped the cloak tightly around his body, the cloak that had too been James', but he didn't think about that either. If he did he would have to cast it aside and it was in his Slytherin blood to survive. He knew even in death he would never join Lily; even in death she was his.
