If Disney Made Les Miserables...

What if Disney made a movie of Hugo's other great novel?

Jean Valjean would be in jail, but would need no reforming. He would be a good guy, and would not steal the silver. He would be falsely accused of taking it, perhaps because it fell in his bag, or because someone put it there. The Bishop would still give him the candlesticks, though, and ignore Valjean's oh-so-polite protests.

Valjean would become the mayor of Montreuil-Sur-Mer, still, though they may change the name to something easier to pronounce. Fantine would not become a prostitute, but stick with just selling her hair and locket. Definitely not her teeth. Javert would be portrayed as an extremely crooked and villainous police officer, and would most likely be fat, since most Disney villains are. Valjean and Fantine would probably fall in love. Fantine would die sweetly and peacefully of illness. Javert wouldn't be after her, because she never became a prostitute and so had no reason to attack that guy. Javert would show up for Valjean, knowing it was him just... 'cause. The trial scene would be cut because it would confuse small children. Valjean would run off to save Cosette.

Cosette would, of course, be an angelic little girl, and the Thenardiers would be fat and ugly and evil. Except, of course, Eponine, who would probably pity Cosette and sneak her food and such. The Thenardiers would take no money from Valjean, simply protest in an evil fashion.

So, time would pass as usual, but Gavroche would probably get a larger part, only because Disney loves cute children. The whole Marius and Cosette love would blossom, only minus Thenardier and his gang trying to rob/murder Valjean. Eponine, of course, will look ravishing in rags and Marius will be very kind to her and realize that she loves him, even though he loves Cosette. The Friends of the ABC will probably become comic relief, and Enjolras will be a lot less harsh and imposing, especially towards Grantaire (They won't be in love, though, of course. Homosexuality is a no-no in Disney movies). Or, he will be portrayed as an overly harsh and radical boy, who we aren't supposed to like. He's just a meany who is trying to separate Marius and Cosette. Marius, of course, won't be living on the brink of poverty, and the whole conflict with his grandfather will be gone. All of the National Guard will be portrayed as exceedingly evil people, just like Javert. Marius will be incredibly depressed when Eponine dies, and all of the Friends of the ABC will either get lovely, eloquent death speeches, or they'll just die in the background. Enjolras will get a lovely death speech, though, either apologizing for being a meany, or asking Marius to pass on some final message to his mother or something. If Courfeyrac is still Marius's roommate, their friendship will be elaborated on until we're sick of it, and he'll get an eloquent death speech, too. Marius will be carried away from the barricade by Valjean, same as always, but Valjean won't pretend to execute Javert, though he'll probably still be a spy who is found out by Gavroche. Gavroche probably won't die, either, and he'll bitterly mourn Eponine's death since he's her brother and all.

Cosette will nurse Marius back to health, but he won't go about mourning his dead friends. They'll have a big, colorful wedding, and Valjean won't die, and the ghosts of everyone will come back, or they'll just come back inexplicably (who needs explanations in a Disney movie?). Everyone will live happily ever after and Victor Hugo will get no credit whatsoever.
