All we need is each other

Rating: PG, possibly PG-13, I don't understand these American ratings! Disclaimer: Possibly Philip Pullman? I don't know! It's certainly not me! Summary: Balthamos/Baruch. Slash. Complete fluff, no real plot! Just me indulging my love of them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The storm was almost impenetrable. Baruch peered into the trees ahead of him, desperate for a glimpse of anything other than the rain. A flash of lightning suddenly lit up the woods, showing nothing but trees, twisted into surreal shapes by the wind. He didn't need the lightning to feel the driving rain pouring down on him, despite the supposed shelter of the trees.

He felt alone. Without Balthamos, he felt like a child again. He hugged his knees closer to him, and again scanned his environs for any change. Nothing.

Suddenly, as if by instinct, he whipped around. Standing behind him was his beloved Balthamos, dripping water, hair and wings plastered to him. Baruch leapt to him, taking his hands in his own and wondering at the coldness of them. He lead him to the tree he had been using as a shelter, helping him to sit down, asking no questions, just letting him rest. After a while, Balthamos roused himself and turned to look at Baruch, meeting his worried look with his own, reassuring.

"They are safe," he said with a smile. The worry in Baruch's eyes, however, did not dissipate. Balthamos caught Baruch's hand and rubbed it with his own. "As am I," he added, raising his eyebrows. Next to him, he felt Baruch relax slightly, mindless of the sarcasm.

"They are both there?" he asked, querying for more details. Balthamos nodded.

"The balloon landed safely. The shaman set up a tent while the aeronaut pulled the gas bag down under the canopy. They will remain hidden until morning. We will also wait until then." Baruch nodded his assent and moved closer to Balthamos.

"I was worried," he murmured into Balthamos's shoulder. "The storm.." he paused, "If something had happened to you..." Balthamos gently caught his chin and lifted it so he could look into his eyes. He saw fear, relief, and many other feelings, but mostly he saw love.

"I will not leave you, Baruch," he whispered. "No matter what happens, I will always be here." His hand still on Baruch's chin, he leaned forward and kissed him softly. Baruch's hands wrapped around his waist as Balthamos gently pulled him down, so that the two were lying on the sodden grass, still intertwined. Balthamos's other arm snaked around Baruch's waist, to pull them still closer. Both ceased to notice the still heavily pouring rain. All that existed was each other.
