The lighting storm was somewhat of a welcome change to everyone that week. The hot summer was making outings unbearable and even the brightest of the Teen Titans' attitude was starting to muddle down, only faintly suggesting everyone remain spirited. But as the dark clouds settled in the sky, you could feel the pressure alleviate the mind numbing heat. And it seemed the city breathed a collective sigh of relief.
All except one resident of Titans tower.
The room was spacious, devoid of clutter save for a bookshelf built into the wall, a massive collection of heavy tomes filled with unreadable titles and strange symbols. There was only a small window, which allowed the periodic flashes of lightning make dancing shadows of the various occult statues and figurines decorating the space.
In the very back wall was the only piece of furniture, a bed, in which lay the owner of the room. She hid under the covers of her bed whispering something drowned out by the thunder, her breathing coming in short gasps.
"Azarath...metrion...zinthos..."
She was scared. Not of the rain or the thunder. But of the something. The something it seemed to be awakening. She could feel it under her skin, creeping through her body making her unfocused. Making her lose control. Her body trying to make itself as compact as possible. The logic in the action seemed to think It'd be easier to control.
But it wasn't working.
She kept repeating this over and over. The words becoming incoherent, tripping over themselves until they were only a jumble of nothing.
The rain getting heavier and heavier louder and louder in her ears the lighting highlighting the sweat the wrinkles of her scrunched up face, strands of hair sticking to her forehead.
There's nowhere to hide.
It's too late. It was too late.
The mantra whispered into her pillow had now become desperate yells backed by some incorporeal energy loud enough to shake the whole building awake.
Her teammates, unaware of what was happening, were immediately on guard.
Robin was the first to get there, sprinting with his staff at the ready wearing only a pair of boxer shorts, knocking on Ravens door.
Beast Boy, startled awake from the scream transformed and ready for a fight, bristled scanning the halls for anything that might be a threat.
Starfire and Cyborg were the last to arrive. Both disoriented but ready for battle. Cyborg announced no intruders in the rest of the tower as everyone gathered at Ravens door. They could still hear her shouting from outside. Starfire was the first to react pushing them aside and knocking the door down.
Inside they found close to nothing.
No threat just Raven shaking like a leaf under her covers. Still chanting under her breath a mile a minute.
A deep breath and a sob made everyone's heart drop.
They'd never seen the girl so vulnerable. It seemed wrong for them to be there witnessing this much of the normally reserved and borderline emotionless girl. No one knew what to do.
Beast Boy, surprisingly, was the one to step forward.
Morphing back to his human form approaching the girl with slight caution he called out her name, gently gauging to see if she was awake or responsive.
The chant didn't stop, so he peeled back the covers. Raven was still in her normal clothes, the unitard and shoes still on. Her legs shaking slightly in the fetal position boots clanking together with dull thuds.
Beast Boy wiped the hair and sweat off her face she tensed up at his touch so he called her name once more reassuring her that everything was okay.
She relaxed and the mantra slowed. The rest of the team could only stare they had no purpose here. The shapeshifter seemed to be handling it all by himself.
He took her in his arms whispering sweet nothings in her ear. At one point the team could swear they heard him singing but they didnt care didn't have time to dwell for all they could do was watch as Raven loosened up relaxing until the chant was no longer passing her lips and her breaths came in normal even huffs.
She finally slumbered into a peaceful sleep. The rain was still pouring outside albeit with less aggressive urgency.
Beast Boy set the girl down, covering her up with the blanket again. He walked back to where the rest of the team still stood, concerned looks mixed with disbelief and bewilderment. Star was the first to recover, she smiled warmly at Beast Boy and flew back to her own room without further inquiry.
Robin nodded curtly at the green boy and promptly did the same. Cyborg lingered by Ravens doorway a little longer staring to and from the sleeping form of Raven and his best friends retreating form.
A small smile inched its way across his face before turning and walking towards his room with a yawn.
