Chapter 1: Bad Timing

"Aang wake up"

"We're here already?" Aang responded groggily as he rubbed his eyes.

"Well we live 10 minutes away, how long did you think it would take?" Zuko responded sarcastically.

"Hey don't be an-" Aang looked up at Iroh in the front seat, before quietly saying "an ass!"

"Aang when did you even learn that word?" Zuko asked with a surprised look on his face, "You're only in sixth grade"

"It was in a book I read."

"You can read?"

"I'm pretty sure I'm at a higher reading level than you zuzu." A smirk forming on Aang's face as he knew his friend hated that nickname.

Zuko smacked him on the head, "Well maybe it's cause I don't spend all my time inside reading books-" A devilish grin came upon Zuko's face, "Aangie!" using the nickname he had heard Katara had for him yesterday.

Aang's cheeks turned crimson red.

"Haha looks like I win." Zuko said with a smile on his face, mentally celebrating as he rarely won any verbal skirmishes with Aang.

"Zuko don't tease Aang, we both know he's very sensitive" Iroh said while pulling into the parking lot.

"I AM NOT"

Both Zuko and Iroh laughed as they began to get out of the car, and Iroh walked the two boys to the front of the school, giving both of them a hug before sending them off.

"Thanks again for dropping me off Uncle! I'll tell Gyatso to make it up to you somehow!" Aang called to Iroh as he and Zuko ran into the building.

Zuko looked at the clock as they got inside, "Barely made it, alright, meet me and Sokka at the usual place during recess?"

"Yup!"

Before leaving they did they're mini handshake, before laughing and walking off to their classrooms.

"Hey, Aang!"

Aang turned around, "What's up"

"You better not bring Katara again! We have something very important business and discuss and there will be ZERO girls allowed" Zuko said with the same grin from the car coming on his face, "And that includes your girlfriend!"

"Oh shut up!" Aang replied as his cheeks began to flush red, as he scurried into his classroom.

As Aang entered the classroom, he scanned the room looking for a certain blue-eyed girl. And to his delight he found her in his usual desk waving at him with a cute smile on her face, motioning him to come to sit in the desk next to her.

Aang grinned and walked over, "Who said you could sit in my seat?"

Katara thought for a moment while tapping her chin, "Well I noticed you were a bit late today so decided to keep your seat warm for you." she said with an innocent look on her face.

"Well I think it's better this way, that seat has a better angle to look at the whiteboard- which I know you'll be needing since I heard you'll be getting glasses soon." Aang sneakily added.

Katara hit him on the shoulder, "Hey how'd you hear about that!" she said as she sighed, "But yeah I'm going to be getting them soon, it's going to be so annoying to have to wear dorky glasses all the time."

"To be honest I always thought that girls were cuter with glasses on." Aang said out loud while looking at the ceiling. He quickly took a glance at Katara to see his comment accomplished what he hoped it would. A furiously blushing Katara.

"You really think I would look cuter with glasses?"

"Who said you weren't cute already?"

Katara somehow got even redder. What is up with Aang today? Katara thought to herself, usually, I'm the one doing this to him, I'm going to have to get him back for this.

Before she could think of some way to get her crush to feel as flustered as she felt, her thoughts were interrupted by the teacher, "Alright class! Let's begin today's lesson.."

Finally, it was recess and Aang had left Katara to meet up with Sokka and Zuko at their usual meeting place, under the big oak tree near the baseball field next to the school. It had become the trio's favorite place to meet up ever since Zuko and Aang found Sokka up in the tree hiding from his sister because "She refused to understand that she belonged in the kitchen".

"What's up guys!"

"You make sure Katara isn't here?" Zuko said as he looked over Aang's shoulder.

"I told you I wouldn't" Aang complained as he shoved Zuko lightly

"Yeah I know, but I was just making sure." Zuko said with a smirk, "Your little girlfriend is around you 24/7 you would think she would get sick of you by now."

"Spirits, can we not talk about those two it makes me want to puke thinking about how lovey-dovey they get around each other," Sokka said while covering his mouth pretending to hold back a barf.

"Sokka you shouldn't be saying anything, at least I don't turn into a complete idiot whenever Yue is around."

"Well, at least Yue isn't your SISTER!"

"Alright alright, enough with it you two." Zuko said as he put both arms around the boys."Sokka I hate to say it but we did help you get your girlfriend, do I have to remind you how many weekends we spent with you whenever you started crying about saying stuff like 'She doesn't like me.' or 'Why would she ever date a peasant like me.'"

Sokka raised his hand to protest but quickly put it back down in defeat.

Zuko continued, "So Sokka I hate to break it to you but I think it's only fair that you help Aang with his forever girl."

"HEY, YOU WEREN'T SUP-"

Zuko quickly put his hand over Aang's mouth, "Relax I'm just teasing, but in all seriousness Sokka I'm getting sick of this kid asking me advice, let's just get him dream girl and maybe he'll get less annoying."

Sokka sighed again, "Honestly Aang I'd rather see her with you than any other guy," Sokka thought to himself for a moment, "You know what screw it I'll help"

A smile came across Aang's face as the trio huddled together trying to devise a plan to help their younger friend out with his love life until they were called back into school to eat lunch.

It had been decided that Aang would finally confess over the weekend, giving the two time to spend with each other if it worked out or a day apart to get over the awkwardness that would ensue if he was rejected. Aang would take her out to the park in their neighborhood and would finally tell her how he felt. It was a cool fall evening and they were just sitting on a bench enjoying each other's company, but Aang felt like something was off. Her cerulean eyes were as beautiful as ever but they seemed to be hiding some sort of sadness behind them.

Aang poked Katara playfully, "Hey are you okay?"

Katara gave him a soft smile, "Yeah I'm okay.", she looked away and thought to herself before turning to him again," To be honest I'm really not, I'm moving next week."

Aang's eyes widened, "What? Why?"

Katara looked into the distance, "My dad has a new job. But I know that's not it, ever since mom died-", Katara stifled a sob and Aang put a hand over hers, "Ever since then dad hasn't been the same, he's using the job as an excuse, I know he can't handle being here anymore. But I just don't get why just because he feels so sad he has to ruin it for me and Sokka." More tears began to run down her face, "I don't understand why we have to restart our lives, I love my life here, I have so many friends, I just don't get it, I'm sad too but that doesn't mean he has to ruin my life too!"

Aang sighed he hadn't expected this and decided that now wasn't the right time to tell her, but if she was moving away when would he even have another time too? He put his arm around his best friend and pulled her closer to him, he felt his shirt get wet from her sobs as she buried her head into his chest.

"If it makes you feel any better I think you look really cute with your glasses on."

A mixture of sniffling and laughter erupted from his shirt, "Oh shut up."

After a couple more minutes of silence, Katara wiped her nose and cleaned her glasses, and looked up at him, "Aang thank you."

"For what?"

"For being you."

Katara leaned onto him once more and they sat in comfortable silence, both of them trying to enjoy each other's presence without trying to think about how their time together would be cut short.

Eventually, the day that the Kesuk family would have to move away came, Aang and Zuko both offered to help them pack up their things into the moving truck and make their final goodbyes. It wasn't a teary one as their tears had dried by the time the final day had arrived, the almost inseparable trio did their final handshake and gave personal hugs and final words to each other. Katara and Aang hugged for the final time, and Aang whispered something into Katara's ear that couldn't be heard by the other boys and was rewarded by her laughter and a peck on the cheek. Finally, the family got into the car and drove away, leaving Zuko and Aang standing in the empty driveway all by themselves.

"Zuko, there's no way it gets worse than this right?"

"I couldn't think of any way it could."

If you want an idea for how the handshake looks like think Kirito and Eugeo's handshake from SAO lmao
