Chapter 9

.

Kyle told the people the same story that reverand Fulton told him to tell. He said how he had to leave, to explain to his superiors that Hamilton and the other soldiers died because they were foolish enough to eat the suspicious food. Kyle would leave, make sure the Ark knew that they needed to send reinforcements to take those who had been selected for the Arks. The people weren't certain if he was telling the truth, but they wanted to believe him. They wanted to believe because it meant that some of them would be saved, that they still had some degree of hope left. Before Kyle left Jamie confronted him in private.

.

Jamie: Everyone seems to believe your story.

Kyle: They want to believe.

Jamie: Can you take me and Jack with you?

Kyle: I can't take you to an Ark, we have no real way to get there even if we were selected.

Jamie: I'm aware. But you're pretty good at surviving. I figure you might be our best chance of surviving until impact. Besides, you're as good company as any for the final days.

Kyle: Are you saying, you still love me?

Jamie: I don't know. But if that's what it would take...

Kyle: You don't have to say it, and you don't have to have sex with me. That said, if things were to happen and you chose to be with me...

Jamie: You mean we can come?

Kyle: Yes. We should go now. I can't promise much, but I'll do what I can for you and Jack.

Jamie: Thank you.
