"Origins"
There was a time when the Avatar was powerful and respected, their wisdom brought peace and harmony to the nations for centuries. All the knowledge, all the power from generations of Avatars lived through the ages, connected into one whole being, bringing hope wherever the Avatar went. But when Avatar Korra broke the connection, everything was lost.
When Korra died, every Avatar chosen after her was unable to restore the connection with the last, being forced to start over after every reincarnation. The Avatar became weak, and hope began to fade.
The world had fallen into a new war, one where benders were considered dangerous and were stripped of their bending. Supreme Leader Jiang ruled with anger and discrimination, dividing the once united nations, and destroying what was built with great effort and sacrifice. Fear spread throughout the lands, some lived in hiding, some were captured and tortured. The Avatars were prosecuted and hunted down, leaving the world to its own, leaving the world without protection.
There was a time when the Avatar was powerful and respected, their wisdom brought peace and harmony to the nations for centuries. And the world needs them back.
"Nia!" Seigen, a middle-aged man in uniform barged through the door of his small and humble home.
From one of the rooms emerged his wife, with a few months old baby in her arms and two toddlers at her heels. "Seigen? What's happened? What's wrong?"
Seigen moved towards her and snatched the sleeping baby from his wive's arms, determination written all over his face. "The Royal Guard is coming, it's time."
"What? Seigen what are you doing?" Nia began to panic, trying to take the baby back, but her husband threw her off, making his way towards the door. "Stop!"
"They will take her away, and then everything will be fine." he snarled and wrapped the baby in his tattered jacket. He looked at the two children hidden behind the kitchen table, staring at him with big scared eyes. "We will all be fine."
"Seigen stop! You can't!" Nia threw herself at the door, blocking his way. "She's your daughter-!"
"She's an abomination!" Seigen barked back at her, angrily swinging the now wailing baby into his bag. Nia gasped and reached for her, successfully taking her back. "She's a danger to our family! Can't you see it?! This is the only way we will ever be safe!"
"How can you say that?" Nia cried cradling her weeping daughter closer to her chest. "She's nothing but a baby! Your baby!"
"If anyone sees what she can do we will all be taken away, we'll lose everything, Nia!"
"if you take her then I'll go with her!" his wife faced him directly. "I'll be damned if I let you take my child to that forsaken place!"
"What about Jin and Leena?" Seigen pointed at his other kids, who were silently sobbing and hiding from the scene before them. "Will you be willing to risk their lives for her?"
"She deserves my protection as much as they do!"
"It's only a matter of time before this catches up to us Nia. We can't keep ignoring it, she's a bender and they will find out sooner or later. If she doesn't kill us first! All benders are the same, they're nothing but dangerous!"
"My family were earthbenders! You know as well as I do that is not true!"
Seigen snorted a burst of disdainful laughter and threw his arms up in frustration "Oh yeah? And where are they now? They were all taken away, you know why? Because it is the law!"
Nia trembled with contained anger, tears streaming down her cheeks as she frantically tried to soothe her daughter's screams. She walked up to her husband and held her chin high, spitting every word with finality. "You know exactly what goes on in that hell. If you want to tell yourself that you're doing the right thing by turning in your daughter, then so be it. But I've seen that place, I saw what they did to my family, to my parents. And if anyone ever tries to do the same to my baby they'd have to kill me first. I will never let anyone harm her, including you. I'll do whatever it takes."
As she spoke, the chanting of the Royal Guard was getting closer. They heard as they broke inside the homes of their tiny village, screaming orders and pulling everyone out for inspection. They were looking for benders, and they were near.
Nia turned around, already making a leave. "Leena, Jin, grab your things. C'mon."
"M-mommy..." The six-year-old girl began to sob, but her mother took the hand and pulled her to the room.
"It's okay Leen, just take as many clothes as you can, you too Jin."
Seigen looked towards the door. It was more than clear that her wife wouldn't let go of the baby easily, the last thing he needed was for her to be taken as well. "Nia-"
She ignored him, shoving clothes and blankets into a bag she'd pulled out, and wrapping the baby in her back. The chanting was getting closer, and the terrified screams and cries of their neighbours could be heard across the town square. Seigen looked back at his wife and children, her daughter had now broken into a fit of sobs, and his son was too scared to move.
"Nia please, you can't do this!"
Nia burst out the door, all packed up and now hurriedly doing the same for her two eldest children. She threw one look at her husband but didn't stop.
They heard the Guard right next door. Jin let out a scared shriek, making Seigen finally spring into action. If he couldn't stop her, he might as well make sure she wasn't captured. He picked up his son and packed his bag as fast as he could. When he was done, he picked him up, his wife right behind him with Leena on her hand.
As they headed towards the exit, someone banged at their door. "BY ORDER OF SUPREME LEADER JIANG, STEP OUTSIDE!"
Seigen ran away from the door and into the back wall, towards a small window leading to the back. "C'mon!"
Nia was the first to climb down, landing roughly on the ground with a silent thud. He lowered Leena next, and just as he was picking up Jin, the door was thrown open.
"SEARCH THE HOUSE!"
He picked up his son, covered his mouth and threw himself out the window, landing on his back. He grunted, trying to remain silent, but the muffled cry of his son caused enough sound to draw the attention of the soldiers.
"OVER HERE!"
Nia had already hidden in the trees, scared that the baby's cries might be heard, and she watched as her husband and son barely made it out of the window and towards her before the guards were rounding up their home, looking for them.
"Mommy? Where are we going?" Leena looked up at her mother, big teary eyes filled with fear. "Who are those people?"
Nia pulled her daughter close and kissed the top of her head. "It's okay baby, we'll be fine. Don't worry."
Withing seconds Seigen was by her side, out of breath, and still muffling his son's cries with his hand. Together, they saw their house being torn apart, all their belongings and memories thrown out the windows. Everything they'd worked for and built together was being taken down right in front of their eyes.
"C'mon." Seigen picked up his daughter and son and made his way deeper into the forest, unable to watch his life destroyed. Nia took one last look at her home and followed them, unwrapping her fussing baby from her back and rocking her softly in her arms. She was staring back at her mother, big emerald eyes filled with tears, unaware of the danger she could've been in.
"Sh, it's okay. You're safe, mommy's here." Nia cooed to her baby, caressing her cheek with the back of her finger. "I'll never let anything happen to you."
The baby yawned, and snuggled deeper into her father's jacket, making her mother smile. "My sweet Kailí."
