A/N: I don't own RWBY.
The history of the Asgardians used in this story is a mix between the comics, the movieverse, and the original Norse mythology. However, for the peace of your mind, I have specified this to be Earth-601 and not Earth-616 (the primary continuity in which most Marvel Comics titles take place). Also, this is the first and last time we will talk about Asgard, another reason for not publishing this as a crossover fiction.
Anyway, enjoy.
PROLOGUE: The Prince of Asgard
Before I begin this story, you should know something about the Asgardians in general.
Although their true origins are lost to antiquity, the Asgardian people, native to the dimensional realm of Asgard, are rumored to have spent centuries as slaves to the mysterious beings known only as Those Who Sit Above in Shadow. Immensely powerful beings that have utilized the Asgardian people to sustain and increase their ever-growing power.
Generally speaking, the common masses of Asgard had long since believed Those Who Sit Above to be only myth, where the only member of the Norse pantheon who was fully aware of the truth was Thor's father Odin. Someone who had attempted for untold centuries to break the cycle of destruction that the mysterious beings have forcefully imposed on his people.
This cycle of death and rebirth had been denoted by Ragnarok, also known as the Twilight of the Gods. The day on which the Gods of Asgard die in their armor and Asgard itself is purged in the flames of the Eternal Flame. Each cycle has repeated itself roughly every 2160 years and in each new cycle, the same massacre had occurred regardless of the differences. The Asgardians would relive their life over and over, sometimes different in appearance, sometimes different in overall character. Even their relationships with their fellow beings varied in the repetitions.
Hence, the story; or rather the myth from our perspective regarding the Asgardians has often been found to be contradicting each other. The same results, and yet produced as a consequence of completely different actions.
Generally speaking, most myths state that the people of Asgard had their beginnings with the birth of the Frost Giant Ymir who rose out of the frozen waters of the Well of Life. This was followed by the birth of the cow known as Audumla who was protected and nourished itself from Ymir's body. With the passage of time, Audumla uncovered the first of the gods, Buri. Buri later married the Frost Giantess as a wife who bore him a number of children. Among these children was Bor, who sired more children with his wife Bestla, and among them was Odin. Odin eventually became the ruler of the realm of Asgard and lorded over its Nine Worlds. Odin, through his wife Frigga, had a single son, Thor, who grew to become the god of thunder and eventually wielded the mystical Uru hammer known as Mjolnir. Thor's greatest adversary in these myths was his half brother Loki, the son of Laufey; a one-time leader of the Frost Giants who was slain by Odin. When Laufey was slain in battle, Odin took Loki in as one of his own, and the youth grew up to become the god of mischief. According to the Ragnarok myth, thanks to the machinations of Loki; Asgard was laid to waste by the unleashing of the Fenris Wolf, Jormungand the Midgard Serpent, as well as the armies of the undead from the depths of Hel. During the final battle, all the gods perished and Asgard was destroyed, Thor himself falling in battle after being poisoned by Jormungand. In the aftermath, what was left of Asgard was swallowed up by Fimbulvetr, or the Endless Winter.
Unfortunately, how much is truth and how much is a myth cannot be determined to the antiquity of the tales, the uncertainty as to the origins of the Asgardian people, as well as the constant cycle of death and rebirth literally rewriting the lives and memories of all its people. What can be confirmed is that in each cycle to date; an incarnation of Thor had died, but his essence was reborn with each renewal of the cycle. Over the millennia the Asgardians were slaves to their fate thanks to the machinations of Those Who Sit Above, although with each rotation Odin would attempt to break it.
Thor was frequently used as Odin's means to break it, having theorized that placing his son among humanity would ultimately make him unpredictable. Odin hoped that this would one day allow his son to break the cycle that he and his people found themselves perpetually trapped within.
However, Odin's dreams would not be realized until many centuries later. And this is exactly where our little Hero comes into play, in a universe more commonly known as Earth-601. (Not 616!)
For the first time in the endless repetitions of the Ragnarok cycle, Odin realized that his dream had been a foolish one. That the inevitable cannot be stopped solely through his shrewd planning. So he aimed for peace instead; for peace is the only way to truly unite the nine realms. Something that had never occurred due to his endless warmongering in the pursuit of denying fate. So he fought and defeated Hela, his eldest daughter, the Goddess of Death.
However, while he was capable of capturing Hela, Odin realized that he did not have the power to kill her. His "All-Seeing Eye", something that he received by sacrificing his right eye to Mímisbrunnr (Mimir's Well) in exchange for Wisdom, showed that only Surtur, who will start Ragnarok had the power to slay her with the Eternal Flame. Unwilling to destroy Asgard once again to kill Hela but also unable to let her free, Odin had no choice but to imprison her in Hel and to make sure she couldn't be released. Odin bound his life to the lock on Hela's prison, meaning the only way for the Goddess of Death to free herself was if he were to die.
After leading Asgard for thousands of years, Odin felt that the burden of wearing the crown was too much for him alone, and so he married Frigga, the Goddess of foresight and wisdom, as well as love, marriage, and motherhood.
Odin and Frigga eventually had a child together, leading to the birth of Thor once more. However, unlike the previous cycles, Odin didn't delve immediately into tinkering with the prophecy, chasing his seemingly endless goal to stop Ragnarok. For the first time since he gained the truth; Odin was content with his eventual death. After all; all that had been born should die someday. So why should the Gods be any different?
So with the birth of Thor, Odin felt that one day he would be able to pass his crown to a worthy successor. That he will be able to live his remaining days with his queen, satisfied with the knowledge that the Nine Realms are finally at peace after all this time.
Many years later, Odin decided that it was time for him to retire as the King of Asgard and make Thor king in his place. So he prepared to crown Thor and explained the responsibilities of being King, of being the protector of the Nine Realms. Asking him if he swore to defend all the people throughout the galaxy.
"Thor Odinson, my heir, my firstborn. So long entrusted with the mighty hammer, Mjolnir, forged in the heart of a dying star. Its power has no equal! It can be a weapon to destroy or a tool to build. It is a fitting companion for a king. I have defended Asgard and the lives of the innocent across my realms since the time of the great beginning. Do you swear to guard the Nine Realms?"
While Odin was speaking, Frost Giants came into Asgard in an attempt to retrieve the Casket of Ancient Winters from Odin's Vault. Sensing the attack, Odin released the Destroyer which eliminated the threat quickly.
Odin, Thor, and Loki traveled to Odin's Vault and found the remains of the Frost Giants and the Einherjar Guards. Thor was angered by the slaughter and demanded Odin travel to Jotunheim to retaliate for the attack. Odin, however, insisted that the peace with Laufey was still in effect and the attack was not an act of war, but an act of a few Frost Giant rebels doomed to fail and they should continue to act as though their peace treaty with Jotunheim was still in effect.
Seeing Thor's rage and war-hungry ways, ironically reminding him of his own in the past; Odin chose not to name him the King yet. Fearing that his uncontrollable rage would cause yet another war with Jotunheim leading to the deaths of thousands across the Nine Realms. Despite Odin's clear orders, Thor remained furious by this attack, and with his friends, Lady Sif, the Warriors Three, and Loki, he went to Jotunheim personally to confront King Laufey and the Frost Giants to find answers he sought about the attack.
When Odin was warned of his son's actions by an Einherjar guard, he charged forward to Heimdall and used the Bifrost Bridge to rescue Thor and his friends from Jotunheim riding aboard Sleipnir, his eight-legged steed, where he found them in the middle of a fierce battle with a Frost Beast and the Frost Giants' entire army.
Although Thor cheered at his arrival and suggested that they destroy the Frost Giants together, Odin furiously ordered his son to be silent. He tried in vain to rebuild the peace between Asgard and Jotunheim; for Laufey steadfastly refused his proposal and declared war between their worlds. Something which Odin had no choice but to accept.
Returning to Asgard Odin ordered the impromptu party to justify their actions. However, hearing nothing but ill-thought-out excuses in response and furious at what had now begun, Odin berated Thor for his arrogance and stupidity in starting a new war with one of his greatest enemies, effectively putting millions of innocent lives in harm's way. While Thor claimed that their enemies should fear him and the other Nine Realms were laughing at their inaction. Odin accused Thor to be unworthy of his title and his family, only for Thor to yell back that his father was nothing more than an old man and a fool for not taking any action against Laufey.
Seeing no other alternative for preserving his hard-earned peace, Odin decided that the only possible solution was the banishment of his own son.
Odin stripped Thor of his powers and in the name of his father Bor and Bor's father before him, banished Thor to Earth for his arrogance. He placed an enchantment on Mjolnir that allowed only the worthy to wield it. He then sent Mjolnir to Earth as well.
"You are unworthy of these realms! Unworthy of your title! You're unworthy of the loved ones you have betrayed! I now take from you your power! In the name of my father and his father before, I, Odin Allfather, cast you out!"
Sent once again to the Mortal Realm like the previous cycles; however deserving the fate may be in this rotation, Thor learned humility. Finding love with Jane Foster he helped save the lives of his new friends from the Destroyer sent by Loki. Due to his selfless act of sacrifice, Thor redeemed himself in his father's eyes and was granted his power once more, which he then used to defeat Loki's schemes of genocide.
Upon being welcomed back to Asgard as a hero, it wasn't long before Thor was forced to return to Earth once again. This time to retrieve Loki; who had begun his attempt at world domination, having taken possession of the Tesseract. Thor joined the Avengers under the guidance of S.H.I.E.L.D. and stood with them to stop the schemes of his own adopted brother, eventually following the newly formed team as they battled against Loki's army of the Chitauri during the Battle of New York until Loki was eventually defeated by the Avengers, captured and returned onto Asgard to await justice for his crimes against Earth.
Depositing Loki back in Asgard, Thor came back to Earth to continue his relationship with Jane Foster, much to the displeasure of his father. Their time together ended shortly as Thor was once again recalled to fight the Dark Elves as they tried to plunge the Nine Realms into eternal darkness during the Second Dark Elf Conflict. During these events, Jane Foster unknowingly became the host to the Aether and a target of the Dark Elves, forcing Thor to bring her to Asgard too.
Once there, Odin recognized the Aether and warns that it will not only kill Foster but that its return heralds a catastrophic prophecy.
Devastated at the news of his lover's imminent death, Thor pleaded his mother Frigga to treat her. And although her assessment didn't give any possible solution other than extracting Aether from her body, Frigga announced that Jane was pregnant with Thor's demigod child.
This led to another feud between Odin and Thor, as Thor demanded that Jane be blessed with immortality so that she can rule Asgard beside him as her queen; while Odin despised the idea of a mortal ruling over Asgard. The only reason Odin stayed his hand from killing Jane Foster at the spot was due to the pleas of his wife.
Eventually, the Aether was removed from Foster's body, leading to the Dark Elves and Malekith's defeat. However, Thor renounced his claim to the throne when Odin didn't accept Jane and left Asgard for Earth so that he could stay with her.
You know, it is funny how some times we find the solution for a seemingly unsolvable problem in the most unpredictable manner; and in the most inopportune of times. How hope blossoms once again in a situation that you have long since deemed to be utterly hopeless.
Odin Allfather, the Aged King of Asgard and the protector of Nine Realms; for the first time since he vowed to break the cycle of Ragnarok, felt that hope of succeeding. A presence, a presence that was way too powerful to be a mortal, and yet it didn't possess divinity.
The power of the individual wasn't impressive however, no… what was truly impressive was its foreseeable future.
Or rather its lack thereof.
For the first time since he gained Eternal knowledge by sacrificing his eye; Odin wasn't able to see the role of this being in Ragnarok. For the first time since the first cycle, Odin Allfather wasn't able to declare surely whether the Ragnarok will occur.
It changed and glitched; as if the imminent future isn't so permanent anymore. He saw possibilities, chances; chances that can finally break this unending cycle; chances that are directly bound to the existence of this being. And if he isn't too mistaken, then the individual is closely related to himself. Someone that had been pushed away at his own blind rage after losing his wife.
A bitter chuckle escaped his throat. He, Odin Allfather; the man who had once exiled his eldest and stripped him of his powers for his arrogance, is now a victim to the same mistake himself. Arrogance at his own power, at his own superiority over other beings.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to check once before he ventured to ask for forgiveness.
Odin left his bed-chambers to find Heimdall, the all-seeing and all-hearing Asgardian and gatekeeper of Asgard's Bifrost Bridge.
"Allfather"; the ever-watchful Guardian of Bifrost kneeled before he had a chance to announce his presence. Odin, however, neglected the quirk with long-practiced ease.
"Heimdall"; the Ruler of Asgard nodded, silently giving him permission to stand. "Have you felt it?" He went directly to the matter, unwilling to indulge in meaningless banter.
Heimdall nodded, his expressionless face somehow becoming even more solemn at the current topic of discussion. He had always been a huge supporter of Thor, to the point of being an accomplice himself in some of his more daring adventures. Something that had irked Odin many times during his rule, but he couldn't replace him as the results were always in favor of Asgard. Not to mention that Heimdall is uniquely suited for his job.
"Is it who I think it is?"; Odin continued, understanding that the all-seeing Gatekeeper won't progress the conversation by himself.
Heimdall nodded again, still tight-lipped on the information. "Please Heimdall"; Odin pleaded, much to the shock of the Asgardian Gatekeeper. "I swear on my father's name that I mean no harm to the child"; he promised, "Just let an old man ask for forgiveness... please?"
Looking at the sad visage of the weary King, Heimdall acquiesced to his demand.
"It is Allfather"; Heimdall cleared the last of his suspicions, "He was born today an hour ago, at the medical facilities inside Avengers Tower. Magnus Thorson, the son of Thor Odinson and Jane Foster."
"Prepare the Bifrost then"; Odin turned towards the gate, "Let me make up for my mistakes before it is too late for me…" Heimdall bowed to his king and went to fix the location, not caring to hear the last whisper of the Old King before he left for Midgard.
"… and for Asgard."
The talk between Odin and Thor went about as well as anyone expected. Which means that there was a whole lot of yelling and cursing at each other, the majority of which were directed towards the former. Not that he can fault his son for doing so. At least Jane was somewhat placated by his apology. She even assured her Father-in-law that she will convince his son to visit Asgard someday.
But the talk wasn't the most important part of this meeting to the Ruler of Asgard. After all; being the father of Thor for a thousand years, and being the Royalty of Asgard even longer, he had a pretty good idea about the pride of an Asgardian. He knew that Thor will discard his apology and dismiss his offer to take the throne so soon after he was humiliated and thrown out of Asgard.
No.
The truly important part was the meeting with his grandson, Magnus. And whatever he had expected of him, the reality outstripped that thought by a million miles.
You see, when Jane became an unwilling vessel for Aether, the dark red liquified form of the Reality Stone; she was already bearing Magnus for about a month unknown to even herself.
Now, being the offspring of a God and a mortal, Magnus should have been by all means a demigod, a mortal with powers identical but inferior to his godly parent. But the exposure to Aether during the pregnancy changed that.
Before we delve into the topic of the Infinity Stone and how it affected the Son of Thor; one must know about the biology of a Divine being. The base structure of a God, or their DNA if you will, is extremely malleable in nature. This facilitates the acquiring of new abilities or domains, either via blessings or via conquests against their foes. It allows them to change their body accordingly to accept and use the new powers.
And when the Divine part within Magnus came in contact with the Aether, it accepted it as a new source of domains, something from the mother of the child. The Godly DNA broke and reformed endlessly in contact with the Infinity Stone, finally forming a conduit capable enough to wield the power of changing the very Reality around us. Something that shouldn't have been possible for a God, or even a Titan; let alone an unborn Demigod child.
And yet it occurred.
Whether through sheer dumb luck or due to the machinations of Fates we couldn't say, but Magnus Thorson; the demigod Child of Thor Odinson acquired the ability to wield Reality Stone to an extent on par with the Cosmic Entities, the primordial beings responsible for the creation of the Infinity Stones. And though the Aether was separated from the child, his ability to use it and bend Reality itself remained. That is why Odin couldn't read his future, for there were far too many to choose from.
For the first time since the first cycle, Odin saw a viable solution to end Ragnarok for good. Because even Those Who Sit Above in Shadow could not possibly hope to change the Reality forged by Magnus while wielding the Reality Stone. So putting aside his petty pride and stubbornness, Odin offered to bless both Jane and Magnus with immortality and make them a part of the Pantheon. He even agreed to welcome Jane as the Queen and Magnus as the Prince of Asgard when Thor finally assumes the throne.
Although Thor was sorely tempted at his offer, he asked for some time to make his decision. He was no longer so naïve to think that the overlapping of the birth of his son and the apology of Allfather was nothing but a simple coincidence.
No… Odin needed something. Something so vital that he can swallow his own pride and words to acquire it. Something; that only his child can deliver. And until he figures out the whole truth behind the matter, he will not endanger his family by blindly running into Asgard.
However disappointed at the outcome, Odin agreed at his decision. Knowing fully that he had no one but himself to blame for it. Bidding goodbye to his eldest son and his family, Odin returned to Asgard, praying that Thor accepts his request.
3 years went by.
Thor returned to being an Avenger, Jane returned to her research in Astrophysics. The only thing that remained unchanged was their relationship and being the loving parents of Magnus Thorson.
Magnus was a prodigy in every sense of the word. His father's tenacity and courage, combined with the sheer intelligence of his mother; he embodied the best of his two very proud parents. He was already reading at the level of a middle schooler by the time of his third birthday and learning to command lightning at his whim.
But alas, like everything that has ever been good; their life on Midgard also came to an end. Enraged at the massacre at Lagos, the United Nations wanted to pass the Sokovia Accords, effectively overseeing and controlling the Avengers. They called for the enlistment of every empowered individual residing in Earth, which unfortunately included the son of Thor Odinson. Annoyed at their attempt to treat his son like a guard dog on a leash, Thor left Midgard disgusted when the inevitable fight broke out between two factions of Avengers, led by Captain America and Iron Man respectively.
And thus Magnus Thorson returned to Asgard with his parents, unknowingly walking towards his own destiny.
Destroying their every possible expectation, the Thor Family was welcomed wholeheartedly to Asgard. Even though Thor had been banished twice from his homeworld, he had always been a favorite to the Asgardians for his spectacular exploits.
Keeping the entire Asgard as a witness, Odin blessed both Jane and Magnus with immortality. Jane became the Goddess of Wisdom, Marriage, and Motherhood; while Magnus would receive his domains on his sixteenth name day.
A month later, Thor assumed the throne of Asgard and married Jane in the presence of Odin; making her the Queen of Asgard. Magnus was named unofficially as the Prince of Asgard, the sole heir to the throne after Thor. The majority were content with the decision, while those that were not, were placated at the approval of Allfather.
Loki, however, was furious at this decision. He schemed and poisoned the minds of Asgardians, stating how a half-blood had no right to be the Prince, let alone a King. And slowly but surely, the minds of the Asgardians twisted at his silver tongue, those that were already disgruntled to call a Midgardian their Queen, jumped at the opportunity to revolt against King Thor.
And hence, a full year after their arrival at Asgard, the Royal Palace was barricaded by the protestors, claiming that Magnus be removed from the position of Heir Apparent, and some true Asgardian be placed in that role.
Thor was furious, to say the least, and would have slaughtered them then and there if he hadn't been restrained by his wife and his father. Assuring that he will take care of the problem, Odin walked to the balconies to address the masses gathered there.
Hearing the words of his ex-subjects, Odin quickly understood that this was planned by Loki. At worst, Thor would have attacked his own subjects and therefore lost his throne, or at best he would have left the throne to take his son away along with his wife. However, luckily or rather unluckily for Loki, Odin had long since prepared for this day. His visions had become clearer as he spent more time with his grandson and he knew exactly what would sway the population in favor of the young Prince.
He raised a hand towards the unruly mob who had been yelling till now at Thor. The noises stopped immediately, a testament to the respect that Odin still commanded from the Asgardians.
"My fellow Asgardians"; he started, his voice carrying over to each ear located in Asgard. "A year ago, I, Odin Allfather welcomed Magnus Thorson to be the Prince of Asgard." The gathered population remained silent, not finding any folly in his claims.
"I assured you that this was the best choice for the future of Asgard, and you believed me"; he continued, this time a few voices grumbling in displeasure. "And today, I assure you that Magnus will be the greatest king that Asgard has ever seen, even greater than me or Thor."
This time, however, the mob of protestants broke down yelling, hurling insults, and showing disbelief to the truth of such a sentence. Further enraging Thor at their false claims.
"Silence!" Odin bellowed, shutting every voice in the vicinity. "I know that you will not believe my claims, so I have a way to prove it to you. See for yourself, and then discuss whether my claims are right or not." The civilians grumbled, clearly not liking this outcome but still willing to give their retired Ruler a chance.
"Thor"; Odin turned to address his eldest, "Bring Mjolnir from the vault and place it in the arena. And Jane, ask Magnus to meet me later." The Royal couple nodded, long since convinced that Odin loved Magnus more than anyone, and he wouldn't let any harm to come to his grandson. Thor walked towards Odin's vault to retrieve Mjolnir, having been wielding Stormbreaker since he became the Ruler of Asgard, a weapon that could even summon the Bifrost.
After the preparations were made, Odin turned to address the gathered people in front of the Royal Palace. "As you all know"; he spoke up above the mutterings of the people speculating on the meaning of bringing Mjolnir here, "This is Mjolnir. And only the worthy are able to lift it, let alone wield it in battle. I, Odin Allfather had failed to do so in my past. Thor, my son, and the previous wielder of Mjolnir had been successful to do so only in his late teenage years. While his brother Loki and the other members of the Royal Family had been completely unable to lift it even by an inch."
He continued, not noticing or caring the look of absolute awe directed at the divine weapon. "What you see before yourself, is an opportunity. You say that the Prince will be an Asgardian; right? Then I challenge you, lift the hammer, and the position will be yours. It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, loved by many or a lonely orphan, or even a male or a female; prove your worth and the honor is yours." He stated, much to the elation of the overconfident Asgardians looking at hammer hungrily. "But if you fail, and my grandson is able to do so; then vow in my name that you will never question his authority."
Nodding readily at his words, the mob started to try their luck one by one in the presence of the Royal Guards. When it was clear that none of the gathered people were paying any attention towards the Royal Family, Thor furiously stalked to his father.
"Father?" Thor hissed near his ear agitatedly, "How do you expect a four-year-old to lift Mjolnir!? It took me twenty years to prove my worth to it!" Jane nodded at his words, fully agreeing with her husband.
"Believe in your son Thor"; Odin whispered back, "I wasn't joking when I said that he will be the best king that Asgard has ever seen." He finished, not looking at their astonished expression.
"You know something, don't you?"; Jane accused, the odd choice of words not escaping her brilliant mind.
"Indeed I do"; Odin nodded, not wanting to lie to his daughter-in-law, "But I cannot say it now." He finished regrettably, noticing the irritation clearly visible on her face. Luckily Thor came to his rescue, far since accustomed to the secrets and prophecies handled by Odin. "As long as our son is unharmed, we won't challenge your decision"; he steered his wife away, "But remember; that unlike you, our son means more to us than Asgard itself."
He escorted Jane to the Royal Box in the Viewing Gallery; watching the hopefuls try their luck.
3 days and 3 nights this ceremony continued.
Every willing man, woman, or child in Asgard, irrespective of their caste, creed, or standing tried their luck to become the heir to the throne. Finally, at the chime of noon on the fourth day; there were no more participants to the challenge. No one left to try and see if they are worthy enough to lead Asgard one day.
Odin stood from his seat. "People of Asgard"; he greeted, "You have tried and failed to do the task that I asked of you." Every one present bowed their head in shame as Odin swept his gaze over the assembled crowd. None willing to look in the eyes of the Allfather, none protesting; for it was nothing but the absolute truth. "Now, do you remember your promise?"
They nodded grudgingly, humiliated at their failure but still unwilling to believe that a child can lift the hammer when Thor himself took decades to do so.
"Then please welcome my grandson, Magnus Thorson; the son of Thor Odinson and Jane Foster-Odinson!" A few clapped, some out of habit, some mockingly. Regardless, the lower gates to the palace opened, as Magnus stepped inside the Arena.
Absolute silence descended upon the entire stadium. Because for all their protests, the Asgardians hadn't seen their Prince at all barring the brief glances during the festivities. The prodigal son of Thor loved to spend his time either sparring with the Warriors Three, or reading new books in the Royal Library, not unlike his own mother or grandfather.
And now that the Prince had descended on the arena before everyone, the Asgardians couldn't help but agree that indeed, this is the Prince of Asgard.
Silver-plated armor covered his torso; his arms completely devoid of any plating to facilitate free movement of the appendages. He wore a tunic underneath it, the royal blue colored cloth highlighting his storm blue eyes, far deeper than either of his ancestors. He walked with a measured gait, not a single movement wasted in his action. Every step taken, are taken with the utmost confidence, his eyes only fixed upon the hammer. Wind billowed against his frame, blowing his blonde hair back along with the blue cape attached at his shoulders. [Consider a cross between the attire of Thor from Infinity War and Male Saber from Fate Prototype.]
Magnus Thorson walked like he owned the Arena, like the previously mocking and jeering crowd are irrelevant. Not important enough to gain his attention. In spite of being only a four year old, his very posture demanded the respect of men ten times his age.
As he reached closer towards his prize the wind increased, the sky turning dark at midday as clouds started gathering over the stadium. Completely silent; as if waiting patiently for the announcement of their new Ruler, not unlike the audience inside the Arena.
When he was within a foot away from the mythical hammer, blue lightning started to crackle over its surface, as if impatient to garner his touch. Pleading him to walk faster towards it. In response, his body started to glow with a Golden-Red Aura, the winds now circling around his steady frame instead of against him.
The entire stadium stood upon their feet, their eyes wide as they waited with bated breath for the final outcome. Whether he succeeds or not, it was certain that this day will be forever remembered in Asgard.
Magnus stopped as he approached within an arm's distance from Mjolnir. Turning around to look into the eyes of his family one last time, he slowly reached towards the hammer.
As soon as his right hand tightened around the handle of the Divine Weapon, blue lightning surged towards his body while the golden-red glow seeped inside the hammer. Neither of them moved, while the majority of the crowd had to look away due to the bright light being emitted from the spectacle.
Now before I explain the bonding process, you must know about the history behind the forging of Mjolnir. About how it came into being, and why it chooses only the worthy to wield it.
According to the records of Omnipotence City's Halls of All-Knowing, the phenomenon known as 'God Tempest', or the 'Mother of Thunder', was a cosmic thunderstorm that existed since the dawn of time and grew gradually in size with the passage of each eon. The worst of its wrath was always reserved for those who truly deserve it, making people believe it had a mind of its own.
"Its winds blew comets off course, ripped worlds from their orbit, and snuffed out stars like flickering candles. Its lightning was capable of turning moons into dust, and its thunder made black holes tremble."
On its path of destruction, the God Tempest eventually reached Asgard. All-Father Odin confronted the storm and fended it off for days with the power of the Odin-Force. Once the storm grew tired and weak, Odin struck it with a nugget of Uru which had been gifted to him by the Dwarves of Nidavellir. Through means of dark and primal magic, the storm became entrapped inside the Uru.
Odin subsequently took the piece of Uru back to the Dwarves so they could forge it into a weapon through which Odin could wield the storm's power. After seventeen weeks of forging, during which the Dwarves had to use the power of a star to reshape the metal, the piece of Uru was transformed into a hammer, which Odin christened as Mjolnir.
However, the storm still raged inside the mallet, and it refused to acknowledge the battle-hungry Odin to be worthy enough to wield it, forcing him to enchant it to prevent anybody unworthy from lifting the hammer, lest they lose their own life trying. Mjolnir was then left to sit in the weapons hall of Asgard for ages.
Eventually, God Tempest, an ancient being created by the very same Cosmic Entities (creators of the Infinity Stones) to punish the wicked and unjust, became… for the lack of a better term, let us say bored.
Bored sitting inside the decorated halls of Asgard, unable to fulfill its purpose and yet unwilling to let someone unworthy to use it. So, when Thor Odinson; the eldest son of Odin tried his luck, Mjolnir judged the potential in him to be sufficiently worthy. And though by no means was Thor a perfect match; for the first in several thousands of years, God Tempest found a possible candidate. Grasping at the only option to break out in action, it allowed itself to lifted by him. Resulting in the first wielder of Mjolnir. Though God Tempest didn't interfere much in his adventures; not deeming him worthy enough to command its full attention.
Eventually, Thor found the weapon meant for him, Stormbreaker. The weapon designed for the King of Asgard, designed to be stronger than Mjolnir; or at least the extent of power it had shown under the command of Thor. It had the ability to summon Bifrost itself, allowing him to reach any destination that required his presence immediately.
And Mjolnir was locked away once again in the vaults of Odin.
For 3 whole days, Mjolnir had allowed itself to be held by the power-hungry scums of Asgard. Allowed them, since even in its semi-sentient state it could feel in its very being that something is about to change. Something major is about to happen soon, something that will alter the fate of the whole multiverse itself.
And that did happen. On the noon of the fourth day, God Tempest jerked up from sleep; its self-induced slumber long forgotten in the presence of a fellow creation.
The Reality Stone.
No…, not the stone. But an individual emitting an identical Aura. Very faint in comparison, but it was definitely there. The powerful resident of the hammer jumped and thrummed in excitement, curious at a living being to be able to replicate the energy of an Infinity Stone.
The source came closer and it recognized part of it to be similar to the previous wielder, Thor. Hmm, it contemplated; maybe this person can finally be its wielder. As the hand grasped the handle of the weapon, lightning flew into the veins of the user, recognizing his command on the element. While the Golden-Red Aura seeped into Mjolnir as God Tempest tried to measure his worth.
The first thing that it found was his age.
Huh.
Only four years old.
And although it was impressive for a child to exert such power, he didn't accomplish enough to achieve its companionship. Maybe in the future, it considered.
As soon as God Tempest tried to recede the lightning inside the hammer, the Red Aura seeping from the child throbbed intensely; making the Mother of Thunder lose connection from its own element. It seeped into its ethereal body, clouding its vision, ensnaring its mind. And when it tried to free itself from the web; it showed it the visions.
Every possible version of Magnus Thorson. Every reality, every dimensional counterpart of the current child, of what he could do; of what he could be in the future. And God Tempest watched them astonished; as none of the infinite versions of the Wielder changed from one key attribute.
Each of them were worthy enough to wield Mjolnir. And each of them wielded it.
Realization blossomed inside the primordial thunderstorm. The true wielder of Mjolnir; the true wielder of God Tempest; it was always Magnus Thorson. Irrespective of the universe, irrespective of his parents and family; he was the one that the Time Stone had whispered in its ears.
The hammer glowed with a Bluish Aura, melding and dancing with the Golden-Red Aura of its user. Mjolnir lifted from the ground, and as the Prince of Asgard held it towards the sky; the massive thunderclouds bellowed and struck torrents of lightning around and over their new Ruler; content at the news of his choosing. The winds, no… storm raged upon the skies that day, reminding Odin of the time when God Tempest itself had raged and howled over Asgard.
The audience shook in the seats, having been forced down by the sheer pressure of the enraging Thunderstorm. Each one of them stared at the Arena; is this… is this the end of Asgard? Have they somehow mistakenly insulted a primordial? A primordial disguised as a child; who will now destroy them and their world?
The haze that had descended upon the Arena by the constant rain and wind cleared out slightly; allowing the spectators to see what was happening on the field. Jane was crying and asking Thor to stop the storm and save her baby, but even the God of Storm and Lightning seemed tiny in front of the Mother of Thunder. Even the Almighty Thor found himself lacking in front of the bellow of God Tempest. The only one who wasn't outright panicking was Odin, who had somehow expected something like this prior to the issuing of the challenge.
An hour passed, or maybe a minute. The dazed, frightened, and dumbstruck audience looked on dumbly as a figure stepped out from the column of lightning. Blue lightning crackled and danced along his length, while he held a hammer in his right hand. His head was bowed low, the blonde hair covering the expression on his face.
Just as Thor was preparing to jump down anyway to ensure the safety of his son; the head snapped up. Blonde hair danced with the ongoing wind, as Lightning of the deepest shade of blue crackled within his eye-sockets. None dared to move a muscle, none dared to produce even a whimper. The Son of Thor Odinson, no… The Prince of Asgard stood there; silently judging them for all they're worth.
His right-hand rose towards the sky; as humongous bolts of lightning raced out from the hammer. Destroying the rain clouds and bringing the sun back above Asgard.
As one, the entire Asgard bowed before a four-year-old that day. Learning humility at the face of their misplaced arrogance and rejoicing at the choice of their future King. The thunderous voice of King Thor cut over the violent thunderstorm and cheers; reaching the ear of each and every being across the Nine Realms.
"ALL HAIL MAGNUS THORSON, THE GOD OF THUNDERSTORM; WIELDER OF MJOLNIR AND THE PRINCE OF ASGARD!"
Other than being recorded forever in the annals of Asgardian history; it also brought huge changes in the Kingdom of Asgard. Their faith in Odin and their respect towards Thor and Jane reached new heights. On the other hand, Loki was shamed and vilified for his dishonest intentions towards their Prince.
But perhaps, the most affected by the incident was none other than Magnus himself. As the praise of the Asgardians heaped and reached even higher heights upon their beloved prince; Magnus in turn became more secluded. More focused. More determined.
Gone were the days when he played or laughed with others; instead his every waking moment was dedicated towards the betterment of himself. He learned Asgardian studies under his grandfather, while his mother taught him Midgardian science.
He trained with Mjolnir with his father, his vast experience in wielding it coupled with the active participation of God Tempest; led him to heights that were simply impossible for Thor to ever reach with Mjolnir. He sparred with the Warriors Three regularly, often barehanded after listening to enough cautionary tales from his father. About what happened when he somehow lost his hammer in the flow of battle.
Slowly but surely, Magnus excelled in every challenge and toppled every obstacle placed before him. He experienced battle fighting beside his father. He experienced ruling standing beside his family in the court. He learned to be a leader from leading his own troops after Thor and Odin judged him to be ready. He even applied and gathered the Midgardian degrees on Science under his mother's insistence, who suspiciously kept muttering something about "showing that damn Stark".
Anyhow; the years passed gradually, as the four-year-old turned into the present-day Magnus, who is currently dressing for his official coronation ceremony on his sixteenth nameday as the Heir to the Throne of Asgard. Checking his uniform once again before the mirror, he opened his right hand outside the window and mentally called for Mjolnir. Asking it to return from wherever it goes when he isn't using it.
The habit of catching the hammer outside his room was actually suggested by his mother. Yeah, Magnus shivered a little. He had never thought that someone can yell at a hammer so violently.
After breaking the walls and windows of his bed-chamber for the twentieth time in the first week, it had been soon apparent to every person in the Royal castle that Mjolnir is now more playful for some reason. To the extent that it completely ignores the shortest path between two points and instead follows the path where it can cause the most amount of collateral damage.
Anyway… he caught his weapon and shielded it with air, turning it invisible before tucking it in his belt. This has been something that he had practiced under the suggestion of his grandfather, about how to keep your weapon hidden and ready for emergencies. Although he couldn't use the primary function of using lightning in this form, the nigh-indestructible metal of the hammer swung along with Godly strength made sure to break the strongest of armors with relative ease.
When he reached the Royal Court at last; where the ceremony is scheduled to take place, he wasn't too surprised to see almost the entirety of Asgard pouring in to watch the coronation. Smiling and nodding as per protocol towards the gathered Asgardians, he walked towards the stage where his family was standing. Looking at the proud smile on his father and grandfather and a slightly teary one from his mother, the kind where she often tended to squeal and pinch his cheeks and babble about "how her baby is getting so big so quickly"; a real smile blossomed on his lips.
He stood before the Royal Couple, both of them smiling at him brilliantly. His father even winked at his direction, correctly detecting the nervousness that others couldn't recognize on his face. His mother squeezed his father's hand as he turned around to face his grandfather; who had personally requested to be the officiator of this ceremony.
"Magnus Thorson. God of Thunderstorm and Wielder of Mjolnir. Son of my firstborn Thor Odinson, with the potential of being the greatest amongst us. Today you stand before Asgard with the promise that should harm fall upon our beloved King; you will stand in his place. That you will bear the load of a thousand challenges and still stand upright, unflinching in the face of those who threaten the Nine Realms. Do you promise that? Do you promise that you will do everything in your power to ensure the welfare of Asgard? To ensure the welfare of the Universe!?"
"I do"; he replied confidently, his voice reverberating in the silence that had descended upon the throne room once Odin started his speech. Not that he could fault them for it. There was indeed something odd about how he phrased the question.
Odin looked at him for a long moment after he gave the answer. Nodding absentmindedly; as if ensuring himself that this is indeed the right decision, he raised the cushion holding the crown towards him.
Even as he fixed the ornament on his head meant to be worn by the Crown Prince; causing the audience to burst out in applause, Odin kept staring at his eyes for some reason.
"16 years ago"; he spoke up suddenly, causing all the noises to shimmer down upon hearing the tone of his voice. "I saw a child who can change our future. A child capable of tearing down realities at his whim and forming his own destiny unbound by the Fates itself. I saw a chance, perhaps the only possible one to finally stop the cycle of our destruction." He continued solemnly, still staring at Magnus.
"And now when I stand before him"; his eyes shimmered with unshed tears, "I realize that I love him too much to make the decision for him. For the path that he will have to tread will be too dangerous, too threatening to send my own on it"; he continued, much to the confusion of the people watching the ceremony.
"So I ask you again, Magnus Thorson"; there was somehow more depth to the question this time, more meaning. "Will you do everything in your power to protect the Nine Realms, to protect Asgard?"
"I will"; Magnus answered, even after understanding the gravity of the situation.
"Very well then"; Odin clapped once, as a Royal Guard brought a casket and handed it to Odin. "Then assume the power that you have once commanded when you were but a babe in your mother's womb. Shoulder the responsibilities to finally defeat Those Who Sit Above, and break the cycle of Ragnarok that the Asgardians suffer at their whim." He opened the casket to show him what contained within the vessel.
"Command the Realities itself and challenge the cruel fate of Asgard. Be the true protector of the Nine Realms by wielding the Power of Aether…"
Magnus plunged his hand in the reddish liquid even as he heard his mother screaming from the background. Because for some unknown reason, he had always somehow known of this outcome. By some incomprehensible logic, he had always known that this; was supposed to happen.
"… by wielding the Reality Stone."
Red liquid seeped inside his veins as his previously Golden-Red Aura turned completely red. His storm blue eyes turned into an intimidating blood red, as the knowledge every possible Reality in this dimension and the next flashed before his eyes. Mjolnir became visible on his belt with red streaks of lightning running across its surface.
Concentrating on the infinite well of Power and Possibilities within his very being, he wished for the Realities that he had seen, the Realities that his grandfather had wished for; to come true.
And so, it did.
Magnus Thorson became the wielder of both Mjolnir and the Reality stone, ultimately defeating Those Who Sit Above in Shadow in a death-defying battle. Thus ensuring that Ragnarok would never descend upon Asgard again. Guided by his father, he joined Avengers in his later years to defend Midgard from the cosmic threats like Thanos, Dark Phoenix, Galactus and others. Ultimately marrying after the death of his parents, he lived the rest of his life content; despite the constant battles with the never ending hoard of threats against the Nine Realms.
He died after living for several thousands of years, placing his daughter as the Queen of Asgard and content at the fact that he had done everything that he had once promised to his grandfather.
Now, this would have been a really short story if this was indeed the story of Magnus Thorson, the Prince, and the eventual King of Asgard. I mean... it started that way sure, but it had diverged to new directions when he commanded the Reality Stone to make the Realities that he saw to come true.
For you see, the Infinity Stone didn't only show him the reality of him being the one to finally end the Ragnarok cycle.
No.
It also showed him what he could have been in another dimension. What he could have been if he was born in a different world under differing circumstances.
And hence; once he willed them to come true, they all did.
Infinite versions of Magnus Thorson; spread over an infinite number of dimensions. All wielding Mjolnir. For although there is only one Reality Stone in existence regardless of the dimension, there is a God Tempest present in every Reality. So when he willed the version of himself wielding Mjolnir to come into existence, they all did. And every one of them was worthy enough to acquire the respect of the Mother of Storm, and to wield the Mythical Hammer Mjolnir.
A third brother was born to the family of a certain avenger. A third Uchiha with a lightning nature who fought with a hammer and brought balance to the age-old feud between the descendants of Asura and Indra. Ultimately fighting Juubi and defeating the primordial beast together; resulting in a significant decrease in the number of people who lost their lives.
A hammer-wielding teen rose from the crime-riddled streets of Gotham. Someone who became able to channel lightning after a particularly nasty accident involving electrocution in a public pool. Helping the Bat-family to curb the crime spreading amongst the city; he eventually fought alongside the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman against the threats that threatened the very universe.
In another universe, he was born as a demigod child of Zeus. Wielding his hammer, he fought beside another demigod of Poseidon to ensure the continued existence of Olympus. Battling and defeating threats of the likes of Titans and Primordials in a series of adrenaline-inducing battles.
And so on.
Although none of these versions were an Asgardian and none of them were fully God, they retained their body and their weapon from the time of making the wish. And hence, while none of them lived for thousands of years like their original counterpart, they were each the finest possible specimen of their own species. Often marring the boundary between a mortal and a divine being with respect to their power.
Each of these tales are filled with breathtaking actions and death-defying battles. Often complimented by cheesy romance or by heartbreaking tragedies, each one of them depicts how a single individual could change the fate of an entire universe by himself. Each one of them…
"Jaune!"
Ah.
Unfortunately; or fortunately, our story doesn't revolve around them. It starts at a literally God-forsaken planet called…
"Jaune! You will be late again!"
A world continuously plagued by the beings of darkness called…
"Lily! Go and wake up you little brother!"
Where teenagers and adults alike train to fight against them to ensure the safety of the Kingdoms. To ensure that darkness doesn't encroach the living like they once did in the past.
Our story starts here, in a small bedroom of a moderately large house located in a place called Anima. And it isn't filled with incessant violence or heart-rendering tragedies that are often related to the majority of the versions of our hero.
Rather, this is a story filled with awe-inspiring adventures and heart-melting romance. One of the few versions that were able to save the day while living their life to the fullest. Where our hero was able to…
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAUNE!"
Yeah.
This is the story of Jaune Arc.
A seriously confused and overpowered teenage protagonist; who doesn't quite understand why he is suddenly in the middle of a planet with a broken moon. Or where the Reality Stone is. Or why one…
Sorry.
Make that three blonde women jumping on his bed, and yelling 'Happy Birthday' at his face.
And wait… did she say brother!?
Join Jaune Arc as he faces the threats and challenges of the World of Remnant, with Mjolnir and a semblance that allows him to produce lightning (well... at least the others seem to think so). Where he finds love and ensures that the planet stands strong against the agents of darkness, the agents of Grimm. Against people who can happily sacrifice the very world that they live in; all for their never-ending quest to acquire even more power.
Okay... okay. He furiously whispered to himself; calm down Magnus, calm down. There must be some perfectly reasonable explanation to my current predicament.
His breathing stabled gradually as he slowly regained his senses.
Well... for a really weird situation; this doesn't seem too bad, he mused internally.
CRAAACK!
The bed tilted dangerously towards left, causing one of them to headbutt his nose; one of them to elbow his stomach and another to knee his umm… veeery sensitive area.
You know what?
I really should have expected this.
"Aaa...AHHH!"
