Elevator Ride

Chapter 1

Dr. Rhodes, Psychiatric resident Reese, Will and Natalie were on the roof, taking a breath after they treated all the patients that suffered from a drug overdose at the new club "Horizon". Suddenly Will and Natalie got a call that the patients need them.

Rhodes and Reese stayed on the roof for a few minutes more when they entered the elevator and pressed on the first floor. Suddenly he elevator stopped and the lights went off, they heard screams behind the door "there is no electricity, where is the damn generator?"

Dr. Rhodes started to breath heavily, he was tough but this situation reminded him an event that happened in the army.

"Are you ok?" asked Reese.

"Yeah, just little anxiety" said Rhodes.

Reese didn't see anything but she got closer to him to assess his situation "Are you sure? She asked again.

Rhodes sat on the floor and Reese took her phone and put on a flashlight "You don't look so great"…

"I'm… fine…" he panted.

"you are having a panic attack" said Reese, "Stand up please"

He stood up and she continued, "Take a deep breath and keep it in for a second and exhale", he did what she told him.

"It's not working… you are a psychiatric resident… don't you have a magic solution?" asked Rhodes almost out of breath.

Reese remembered something and kissed Dr. Rhodes.

In that moment he felt that time stopped, her lips was soft and warm and had a vanilla taste. They separated their lips and the power came back, he looked at her in shock.

"I'm really sorry" said Reese and took a step back.

His heart rate felt normal and his breath was at ease. He didn't say anything and she continued talking a bit panicked she just kissed him, "I read this research that a kiss calms the nervous system and I thought I would try it, I'm sorry if it was inappropriate".

Reese stopped and looked at him and waited to hear his response.

"Thank you" said Dr. Rhodes.

"So you are not mad at me?" asked Reese.

"You helped me and that's what matters" said Dr. Rhodes.

He felt he is looking at her with a fresh pair of eyes. Her curly hair was shiny brown, her hazel eyes shined and she had a beautiful smile. How could I miss this? He wondered.

Suddenly Reese's phone rang, it was Maggie.

"Hi Maggie, thank god you called, me and Dr. Rhodes are stuck in the elevator".

"All the electricity in the area fell and we are using the generator for the operating room. Our friends from the CFD are working on the elevators" said Maggie.

"How long?" asked Dr. Rhodes.

"Do you have patients with you?" asked Maggie.

"No, only the two of us" said Reese.

"We have three elevators with patients, they are rescuing them first" said Maggie.

"We understand" said Dr. Rhodes.

"It will take a while, I don't know how long, stay tuned for updates". Said Maggie.

"Thanks" Reese replied and closed the call.

"It will take a while, we better rest" said Dr. Rhodes and sat on the floor, Reese looked at him and joined him.

"How are you feeling? Asked Reese "You look much better".

"I feel better, thank you" he said.

"Can I ask you a question?" she asked him and he nodded.

"Do you know why you got a panic attack? Asked Reese.

Dr. Rhodes didn't want to talk about it but she looked at him and he felt safe to share. "I was in the military a few years and the moment the elevator stopped, the lights went out and there were screams, it reminded me of an operation in Riyadh that I don't want to remember".

"I'm sorry" said Reese.

"Its fine, I'm fine" said Dr. Rhodes.

"Was it the first time you felt that?" asked Reese.

"I don't think about it a lot but I got panic attacks after I returned home for a few months but they stopped" he added.

Reese smiled at him and he said "You are going to be a great doctor, Miss Reese".

She felt a little flushed and said quietly "Thank you".

"How did you get into cardio surgery?" she asked.

"Do you remember Dr. Downey?" he asked and she nodded. "Before he died he wanted to find a replacement. I was a trauma surgeon and he asked me to join him in a few surgeries, I didn't know what was his agenda but I joined out of curiosity, after a while I understood he was diagnosed with cancer and he wanted someone he can rely on, to trust…"

"I saw a surgery with him in MED school, he was amazing" said Reese.

"He was amazing doctor and an amazing man, in a short time we were very close, I felt he was almost a father figure for me" said Dr. Rhodes.

Rhodes was shocked from himself for being so open, he felt that Reese let him feel safe to talk, she was attentive listener and he almost forgot that he was stuck in an elevator.

"Amazing" said Reese.

Rhodes looked at her with a smile and asked "What about you?"

"What about me?" she asked.

"Why did you choose Psychiatry?" he asked.

"I actually got pathology first, I know I chose it, but I guess it was out of fear to be too attached to my patients" she said and he nodded with agreement.

"What changed your mind?" asked Rhodes.

"It something you said actually" said Reese.

"What?" he asked.

"Life is a journey of ups and downs, if it's flat, you are dead" she said.

"I don't remember saying it" he laughed and she joined in.

"I decided to fight for other residency and interviewed all the wards managers and I really connected with Dr. Charles" she said.

"I'm glad you are out of Pathology" he said with a big smile "You are a great asset to the hospital".

She felt her heart fluttering when he said it. Reese knew Connor Rhodes was good-looking, no one can ignore it but she never saw him like that. His eyes was a mixture of green and grey and they looked like marbles, his smile was heart melting and the way the shirt is placed on his body… her mind traveled far when he said "Maggie is calling you".

Reese woke from her daydreaming and answered "Hi Maggie".

"The CFD are coming to take you out now" said Maggie.

Although he was happy to be out of the elevator, Rhodes thought he wanted more time with Sarah Reese.

"Thank you" said Reese and she got up.

"I hope I didn't miss the karaoke night at Molly's, I need a good laugh" she said.

He got up too and asked "Do you sing?"

"Nooo… no way, I just going to hear some out of tunes singers to brighten my day" she said with a laugh.

Rhodes didn't plan to go to Molly's but he said "Sounds great, I'll be there".

They looked at each other and smiled when Matt Casey finally opened the elevator door. The elevator was stuck between two floors, Matt gave Rhodes a hand and he lifted him up and then Rhodes gave Reese a hand and lifted her up without effort.

"Thank you" she said and looked at his eyes.

Maggie came running and said "Shift in not over yet for you two, we have patients".

Before they went their separate ways, Rhodes said "I'll see you at Molly's".
