Chapter 1: Settling In
Klaus awoke early the next morning to see Caroline sleeping peacefully beside him. He reached out and gently caressed her cheek, making her sigh. He was so happy that she was finally with him and they were going to be parents. As he watched her sleep, he noticed something that should not be possible. Klaus looked at her shoulder, where he had left a love bite from the night before. It should have been healed by now. He listened closely and heard the slow beat of her heart, hearing the difference between her heart and the baby's.
"Bloody hell." He whispered, making her stir. "What's wrong?" She asked, holding onto his arm.
She had turned over, revealing a few more marks. His eyes widened both in shock and confusion as he reached out and touched them, drawing her out of sleep as her eyes opened. Klaus looked confused as she sat up, wondering what he was looking at.
"Um…what are you doing?" She frowned. "You're covered in hickies." Klaus said, making her frown. "I don't get hickies anymore." She replied. "Caroline, I'm being bloody serious, look." Klaus told her, making her frown as she sat up and looked at the body mirror that had been moved close to the bed.
Her blue eyes widened in shock as she looked at her body. She turned to Klaus, fear in her eyes as she realized the same thing that he had. But, just to be sure, she did something that made him very nervous.
"What are you doing?" He asked. "Testing a theory…I won't hurt the baby." She said.
Klaus watched with baited breath as he watched her slide off her daylight ring. Caroline moved to the sun and put her hand into the light. They both were amazed to see that nothing happened. Her blue eyes turned to Klaus as he stared in shock. She was human again. Was this why the witches wanted her? Fear suddenly coursed through him, realizing how close to danger she was.
"I'm human again?" She breathed, making him nod. "I believe so love…something tells me it's just for the pregnancy though." Klaus said, making her nod. "Me too…guess you finally succeeded at something." She said, wrapping her arms around his neck. "What is that?" He asked. "You've marked me as yours." Caroline smirked, watching the lust cloud his eyes as he captured her lips in a hot kiss.
Later that morning, Elijah saw them coming down as a man stormed in. He looked pissed as Klaus kept Caroline behind him. Her eyes saw his amber ones as he looked at Klaus. The elder stood between him and the others as he growled. Elijah's eyes darkened, daring him to try something.
"Jackson." Klaus said, making him eye him. "Why…why did you kill her…she was carrying your child!" He yelled. "Actually, she was never pregnant, it was a pad." Klaus said, tossing it down the steps at his feet, "The one who was really carrying my child was in Mystic Falls and she knew it." "What?" He frowned, calming slightly.
"The witches and Hayley were working together. They were planning on killing Caroline and taking her babe." Elijah told him, making him stare at the blonde, who was standing beside Klaus, calming him. "Why would she do that?" Jackson frowned.
"Because she was jealous of me. First, she was trying to sleep with my ex and when she couldn't have him, she tried to go after Klaus. But I finally opened my eyes and realized that I was in love with him. She didn't like that and tried to make me pay for it." Caroline said, "And she is far from innocent. She got my best friend's brother killed while we were searching for the cure…she is not who she says she was." "So, you're the pregnant wolf?" He replied, making her laugh. "I'm a vampire…but Klaus and I think the hex made me human for the next few months." She said, making him frown. "But Sophie said the girl who was pregnant was a wolf." He said, even more confused.
"A ruse to sell her lies." Elijah said as Klaus and Caroline came down. "One that will cost her dearly. We've already dealt with Tunde and Celeste. I can only imagine who is next." Klaus said, making him nod. "So, what do we do about the witches…the faction?" Jackson asked. "We will let them think they're winning for now." Klaus replied. "And Marcel?" Jackson asked. "Let me handle him. He'll listen to me." Klaus promised. "I hope so…you seem happier about the baby…" Jackson said, noticing his hand had not left her's. "I have the woman I love with me and she is carrying my child." Klaus told him with a smile.
Things calmed down from there after Jackson left. Caroline saw the question in Elijah's eyes as he looked at her, seeing that she was indeed human. They had to figure out who put the hex on her. Klaus saw his stare and grinned a little.
"Just noticing she's smelling different?" Klaus asked. "Yes…who do you think did the hex?" Elijah asked as Caroline sipped her mug of tea. "Your mother?" Caroline said, making them smirk. "I would agree but she was already dead when you got pregnant." Klaus smirked, making her roll her eyes. "Yeah, well she was dead and screwing with you for years." She pointed out, making Elijah chuckle.
"I believe she will do just fine in this family, brother." Elijah smiled, making her nod. "Indeed." He smiled, holding her close as she curled into him.
After Caroline went to sleep that evening, Klaus came down to see Marcel, his adopted son and few of his crew members. They looked at him, seeing him more relaxed than they ever seen him. He nodded at him as he poured Marcel a drink. The younger took it and seen him sit down, looking anxious. He wondered what was on his mind.
"Everything good?" Marcel asked. "…Yes and no…Caroline is here and her and the baby are safe. But the witches are still a problem. I fear they are not done with their deceitful tactics." Klaus told him, making him nod. "They still want the baby." Marcel stated. "Yes…part of me wonders if I should have kept her in Mystic Falls. Their magic does not work outside the city." Klaus sighed. "Something tells me that help can come from there though." Marcel replied, making him look at him.
He knew what he was meaning and knew there was maybe two people who he could count on to help. The others had pretty much abandoned Caroline the second they found out that she slept with him, let alone that fact she was pregnant. Bonnie would be there if she called because they were best friends and she was rather powerful witch on her own. The witches would not know what hit them.
"Perhaps…right now we just have to figure out what they're up to." Klaus sighed. "Agreed." Marcel replied.
Meanwhile, Elijah was sitting at a table alone at Russo's when a brunette caught his eye. She looked at him, making her way towards him. Shock filled his body when he realized who it was. She smiled as she sat across from him, amusement in her eyes. He had been told she died and that she would not get peace. But then again, the Salvatores had never been truthful with them.
"Why do you look like someone shot your dog, Elijah?" She cooed, making him stare. "Katerina." He breathed, making her shiver internally at the sound of her name on his lips. "The one and only. Let me guess, they told you I died?" She asked. "Yes…but I see that is far from the truth." Elijah replied, making her smile. "It is…so, what is going on here?" She asked. "Oh, the usual…our enemies trying to kill us and now a baby is on the way." Elijah sighed. "I heard…Hayley, right?" Katherine asked. "No…she was faking it…Caroline Forbes." Elijah told her, making her stare. "Really…well, your brother and her had been dancing around each other…she finally give in?" She smirked. "And Nikaus has never been happier. She's human now, but the witches are after her…I wish I knew what to do." Elijah sighed, making her smile. "Well, knowing you two, you'll think of something." Katherine said, stealing his drink. "Hmm…so, what brings you here?" Elijah asked, making her look up at him. "…I miss you…I want to give us…a real try…Now, I know that your brother needs you and I know you will never bail on him, especially with cupcake having a bun in her oven, but I want us to try." Katherine said, bringing a real smile to his face.
Elijah leaned over and kissed her, cupping her cheek. That was all he wanted to hear her say. He longed for her, wishing that he could have a second chance. They were meant to be and he was willing to do whatever it takes to keep her at his side. Since Klaus was happy, he knew he could as well. Caroline was strong enough to help keep him on the right track.
"I do as well. I should have fought harder and seen past Elena's emotionless lies." Elijah told her, making her smile. "Well, she has her feelings back and her brothers to herself. I think we can forget them." Katherine smiled, staring into his dark eyes. "Agreed…I've missed you. Not a day has went by when I haven't thought of you." Elijah said, making her smile. "Nor you…so, do you know when she is due?" She smiled, moving to sit beside him. "No, we just found out about her being human this morning. Niklaus was quite pleased to that should Mr. Lockwood show up, he would see that Caroline was his." Elijah smirked, making her laugh. "What, she have a hickie or something?" She grinned. "Something like that…he has realized that he has to be gentler now…she was vampire when she left. We gave her a few bags the other night and then this morning it changed." Elijah replied. "Are you sure that your mother didn't do this…like from the other side?" Katherine asked, making him sigh. "Caroline thought the same thing…but why would she want to make us have children when she tried to kill us?" He said, making her nod. "I don't know, but sounds like we have our work cut out for us." Katherine told him, making him smile brightly. "That we do…now, what do you want to do?" Elijah asked, making her smile as she grabbed his tie and pulled him closer to kiss him. "Something wicked?" She hummed, making him smile. "I know just the thing." He replied, making her smile brightly.
He paid for their drinks and drove back to the compound. Katherine's hand never left his leg, driving him nuts as they drove back to the compound. He kept a tight grip on the wheel as they pulled up to the compound and stopped. He leaned over and kissed her soundly, making her sigh as they both got out and smiled. Thankfully, Klaus had gone to bed and wasn't up to see the doppelganger. Elijah grinned as he lifted her up and kissed her soundly before flashing them to his bedroom. The rest of the night, Katherine and Elijah spent wrapped in each other's arms. They were going to take their forever, just as the two blondes on the other side of the house had.
The next morning, Klaus and Caroline came down to see Katherine smiling brightly as she stared at Elijah with love. He smiled back as he kissed her knuckles as they entered the dining room. His eyes drifted from her to them, seeing the shock on their faces. Katherine smiled as Caroline looked at her, stunned. Klaus did as well, but smiled. He knew that Elijah had made his choice to who he wanted to be with and he was not going to stop him.
"Katerina Petrova…thought you were dead?" Klaus smirked, making them look up. "Nope…congrats by the way…know when you're due?" She asked, looking at her.
"We are going this morning…but whatever that smell is, it making me hungry." Caroline said, making Elijah chuckle as beignets were brought in. "That would be breakfast…you should eat and drink…blood work will not be kind." Elijah replied, making her nod. "I remember from physicals…good thing I have good veins." She sighed.
Later that morning, Caroline sat in the room with the ultrasound tech and Klaus. They were doing the first ultrasound and she could not wait to hear her baby's heartbeat. Klaus held her hand, staring at the screen intently. As the tech moved the wand, he could see the tiny coming into view.
"Bloody hell." He whispered. "There the baby is." She smiled as he stared.
The sound of the baby's rapid heart beating told him the babe was healthy and growling. He saw little movements from their arms and see the start of facial features that were all her.
"Little one's heartbeat is 150." The tech smiled, making Caroline smile. "They're perfect." Caroline smiled. "They are…you're looking to be due around the beginning of November." The woman said, making Klaus turn, making her laugh.
When they left, he kissed her hard, making her melt into his arms as his hand drifted to her growing belly. She smiled at him as he stared at her.
"A little prince or princess." He hummed. "Well, that heartbeat likely means a princess." She grinned, making him smile more. "All I want is for the little one to be born safe and healthy and happy." Klaus told her. "Me too…I'm starting to need clothes…think we can pick some up?" She asked, batting her eyes at him. "For you love, anything." Klaus chuckled, wrapping his arm around her as leaned into him.
Elijah saw them come into the compound later that day and the brilliant smile in his brother's eyes. He sighed, knowing that he had to be the one who burst it as a woman looked up with him and Katherine.
"Niklaus." Elijah called, making him look up. "Yes brother?" He said a smile in his eyes. "We have a guest." He said, making the blonde's eyes drift to the red-haired witch on the sofa.
"Klaus." She purred, making him eye her with a distrustful look. "Geneviève…what are you doing here?" He frowned, making her look at him. "We need to talk." She said, making him smirk. "Right now, I need to get my fiancé settled and something to eat…I'll be along shortly." Klaus told her, making her eyes drift to Caroline as he turned away and put his arm around her shoulder.
"Fiancé?" She asked. "I'll properly ask in time, but I need you to trust me." Klaus told her, sliding a stunning ring onto her finger, "She is the reason my sister is not here…she is doing my mother's bidding." Klaus told her, kissing her soundly. "Okay…you're making this hard to think when you do that." She pouted, feeling him nip at her throat. "I'm sorry…the wolf in me wants you right now as does the man…but unfortunately, that wench things I'll still play her game." Klaus sighed, making her smile. "Okay." Caroline smiled as he kissed her again.
They left the room as Caroline moved to sit by Katherine. The doppelganger looked at her with a smile as she showed her the pictures.
"A girl?" She asked. "Maybe…I hope so." Caroline replied.
"So, what do you want?" Klaus asked. "As you know, the ancestors want Marcel gone." She said. "Its more like they want my child gone and you're taking orders from my mother." Klaus said, making her blue eyes look at him with fear.
"I have to agree…my mother has been hell bent on destroying our happiness." Elijah said, looking at her. "Well…how do I gain your trust?" Genevie asked. "Nothing…especially since my sister told me you were the witch who called Mikael here." Klaus told her, making Caroline's eyes widen. "Who told you that?" She stammered. "My sister…your plan failed to make me hate her. She wanted her freedom and to be happy and I gave it to her." Klaus smirked.
He looked around at the four harvest girls listening. Among the was Davina, who looked like she hated the situation. He smirked, nodding at her. He knew that she was the strongest of them all and she would survive.
"Now…should your witchlets try anymore spells. I will be forced to call one in of my own. And trust me, she's much stronger." Klaus smirked, making Caroline and Katherine share a look.
Just as he said that, Monique, Sophie's niece tried to attack him. Before any of the vampires could do anything, she was sent flying. The other harvest girls stayed where they were as a figure came into view.
"Bonnie!" Caroline exclaimed. "Thought I would leave you here?" She smirked.
"You will pay for that!" Monique hissed as Bonnie put her hand to her head and chanted. "Honey…I'm not bound by this city and I don't take orders from Esther Mikaelson…you need to learn some manners." Bonnie said as three of the four harvest girls lost their magic.
"You're a Bennett witch." Davina said, making her nod. "Elijah told you about me…you need to decide whose side you're on. Theirs or the side of life." Bonnie told her, making her nod as the elder witch walked away.
"How dare you!" Genevie glared. "No, how dare you. Witches are supposed to keep the balance and at the moment, you're disrupting it. It's sad when the Originals are doing more to keep said balance then nature's servants…you should just go back to the ancestors…and tell Esther to go to hell." Bonnie hissed, making her stare.
Klaus and Elijah smirked, sharing a look of amusement when the redhead and the three witchlets left. Davina remained behind and looked at Elijah and Klaus.
"I know somethings that could help." She told them, making them look at her. "Oh?" Klaus asked. "I know that she's working with the wolves…and not Jackson. Ollie has a side deal with the Correras…who are really wolves…they just blend here in the quarter because she runs the casinos." Davina told him, making Elijah frown.
"Why is that a bad thing?" Caroline asked. "They mean to take over the city and anytime wolves have had run over the quarter, that meant bloodshed." Elijah sighed, making them frown.
"How do we stop them?" Bonnie asked. "We have to take them out." Klaus sighed, looking at Caroline. "But?" She replied. "But that means we need Marcellus on our side." Klaus told Elijah, making him nod.
"Tell him his banishment is over and we need them." Elijah said, making them all share a look. "And how do you plan on convincing him to return?" Caroline asked. "Oh, it won't take much convincing." Klaus smiled, turning to the young teen behind him
An hour later, Marcel came into the compound, searching for someone. When he spotted her, he rushed over and pulled her close. Davina smiled as she leaned into him, finally able to relax. Marcel kissed her head, thanking God that she was alive.
"You have no idea how glad I am that you came home." He breathed, making her smile. "Me too…we need to stop them. Genevie will get their magic back…but they're going to kill that baby and that isn't right." Davina told him. "We will…don't worry." Marcel said, making Klaus smile from his seat.
He remembered when Marcel was that young and wished that things had been different. Marcel saw the look in his eyes and nodded as he held Davina. She was like a daughter to him and he would do whatever it took to protect her.
"Welcome home, Marcellus." Klaus said, making him smile. "Thank you…so, what is the plan?" He asked. "We will have to figure this out in the morning…I'm sure you would like to catch up with Davina." Klaus replied, making the teen look at him with shock. "Thank you." Marcel smiled.
"Thank you, Klaus, and don't worry. I think we can start over." Davina smiled. "Agreed." He replied, making her smile more.
The group settled down that night, everyone feeling more relaxed than they had in a while. Caroline smiled as she slept on Klaus' chest, content to listen to his heart beat all night long. He too rested, thankful that she was there and their baby was safe. His hand drifted to her belly as he started to fall asleep. That night, he dreamed of what the growing child was going to look like.
