PROLOGUE

In the middle of a ruined city block, All Might stood on the rubble of a collapsed building, holding a hand on the gaping wound in his side. The Number One Hero had high hopes for the next attack he was about to release. His opponent had been as fierce as ever, and now, with his guts hanging out, All Might only had one more chance to stop him.

This has to work, All Might thought. He pulled his arm back, crouched low, and shot forward. The rubble under his feet vanished in a gust of wind as he shot forward.

Covered in blood and on his last legs, All Might pushed forward. The world would have been shocked at the sight of him. He was like something you would see in a zombie movie.

All for One reacted instantly, flying forward, his right arm growing grotesquely as Quirk after stolen Quirk was activated. The mortal enemies grew closer and closer, the collided with explosive energy shot in every direction.

All for One laughed as their fists met. All Might was already half dead. How could he expect to win? Suddenly, pain shot through All for One's body. His arm exploded in a spray of blood. His muscles ruptured, and his bones broke.

"This is where it all ends, All for One!" All Might growled. His own body was being pushed to its physical limits. "Our fight is over!" He threw his arm back and roared to the sky.

"UNITED STATES OF SMASH!"

He pushed past All for One's broken arm. The power of all who came before him was in his fist as it impacted All for One.

A punch backed by the power of eight generations of heroes.

Not even All for One could hope to withstand it.

The Symbol of Evil flew back, his body limp as a ragdoll. If not for the building in his way, he would have flown for hundreds of miles. Instead, he impacted concrete, crashing through wall after wall until all of his momenta was gone.

He fell to the ground, broken and defeated.

A mile from where All for One, All Might collapsed to his knees, he struggled to keep his body up, the Symbol of Peace couldn't be seen lying on the ground as if defeated. Seconds later, his body succumbed to the overwhelming injuries All for One had inflicted, and he fell the rest of the way to the ground.

"Toshinori!"

All Might turned his head as his teacher landed next to him.

"Toshinori!" Gran Torino huffed; he was out of breath and struggling to catch his breath.

"Did...did you come all the way from the city?" All Might asked.

Gran Torino glared at his former student. He would have clobbered Toshinori over the head if the fool wasn't in such a terrible state.

"What were you thinking?" he demanded. "Going after All for One alone? You could have been killed!"

All Might looked up at his teacher—something he hadn't had to do in years. "Only a bearer of One for All can beat All for One," he said tiredly. "You know this."

"You don't know that." Gran Torino retorted. "You wanted to be the one to beat him. Because of what he did to Nana, your former master, and my friend, you wouldn't allow anyone else to be the one who defeated All for One. To try and say it was for any other reason is a lie!"

"Please...go find All for One?" All Might asked, then his head fell forward.

Realizing his former student had fallen unconscious, Grand Torino sighed as he took a deep breath, readying himself to use his Quirk even more. He was already past what he should be doing at his age, but Toshinori was right. They had to make sure All for One didn't escape.

As he crouched down, Gran Torino cast a worried look at his fallen friends' legacy. Toshinori had never been as hurt as he was now. A quick meeting with Recovery Girl was always enough to get the Symbol of Peace back on his feet.

That won't be the case this time, Gran Torino thought as he shot up into the sky. The massive hole in Toshinori's side would be no easy fix. It might just be the end of his career.

Propelling himself higher into the air, Gran Torino looked for any sign of All for One. The rubble left behind by Toshinori's battle made it nearly impossible to see anything. Still, he searched, and searched, and searched...long after more heroes had arrived. Toshinori was taken to the closest hospital, no doubt to receive emergency care, and Gran Torino kept searching.

He enlisted the other heroes' help, and it was only after Ragdoll, a Pro-hero in the Wild, Wild Pussycats agency, arrived that he abandoned his search.

Ragdolls Quirk, Search, allowed her to monitor and observe up to a hundred people at a time. Including knowing their locations and weak points.

"The villain All Might fought isn't here," Ragdoll said, opening her eyes. "Twenty-six heroes, and a small boy, who still needs to be rescued."

A boy? Gran Torino wondered. He knew that Toshinori had maneuvered All for One to a district still in development to protect innocent civilians from the devastation their fight would no doubt cause.

"Where is the boy?" he asked Ragdoll.

"Follow me," she answered, and led him to a wrecked building. Inside, there was a wall with the shape of a body smashed into it. The sight could have been comical, if not for blood smear where the head of the body was.

"Hello!" Ragdoll called out. "We're heroes, and we're here to help!"

Gran Tornio stood back as Ragdoll walked towards the bloody wall, then turned right and disappeared down a hall. Moments later, she returned, leading a blonde boy behind her.

The boy looked like a normal boy, except for his red eyes. Gran Torino wasn't shocked. Quirk's had been around far too long for anyone to be shocked when they saw someone with inhuman features.

"Ragdoll, will you check one more time?" he asked. She glared at him, but her eyes closed anyway.

Gran Torino knew how insensitive his request must have seemed. There was a boy who was no doubt traumatized if the empty look in his eyes was anything to go by, but All for One couldn't be allowed to escape.

While Ragdolle searched for another person, the boys red eyes stared at her, and three black tomoe spun around his pupil.

Gran Torino blinked. The boy turned and looked at him with blue eyes instead of red.

"Still nothing, Gran Torino," Ragdoll reported. "There is no one in my range but the heroes and this boy."

"Naruto..."

Gran Torino and Ragdoll looked at the boy. Ragdoll crouched down so she was at the same height.

"Naruto?" she asked with a smile. "Is that your name?"

Naruto nodded and looked over his shoulder at the blood on the wall. He could only stare for a second before Ragdoll placed a finger on his cheek and turned his face away from the sight.

"You shouldn't look at that," she said. "It's not something a child should have to see."

Naruto didn't bother telling her that the bloody wall wasn't near as bad as what had caused it. All for One's head had been crushed. His eyes and nose had been caved in. He should have been happy to the monster who had turned him into a parentless orphan and forced him to be alone in such a state. Instead, he was just sick.

"Come on, Naruto," Ragdoll said, gently pulling him out of the house. "You're safe now."

CHAPTER 1

Five years later, Naruto wasn't as alone as he thought he'd be. After being stuck in the "Bad Seed" orphanage, he met others like him who helped him through entering a world that hated him just because of what his parents had done.

I can't live here forever, Naruto thought as he rolled off his bed. His bare feet hit the cold concrete floor under him but he was so used to it he didn't even shiver.

As tempting as it would be to stay in the only place where people didn't treat him like he had the plague, Naruto knew he couldn't.

There were people counting on him to step out of his comfort zone and do what they couldn't. He was the only one who could break the glass ceiling. Not that there's any pressure or anything, Naruto scoffed to himself while he headed down to the cafeteria for breakfast.

In the cafeteria, he could see the rest of the kids were already eating breakfast and laughing with each other. To the outside world, it probably looked like just another day at the orphanage. But today wasn't just another day.

Today was the day...

"Late again, Naruto? On today of all days?"

Naruto sighed as he walked to the buffet set up at the front of the cafeteria. Behind the counted, a pale boy with blonde hair lighter than his own was smiling at him, holding out a bowl of food.

"Don't worry, I saved you the good stuff," Inojin said, handing the bowl on the counter. "None of that sugary nonsense the others are eating."

"The others are eating that sugary nonsense because it tastes good," Naruto said. He glanced longingly at the foods Inojin deemed "too unhealthy" for a Pro-hero. Then he looked down at his own breakfast—a bowl of oatmeal with banana slices. The same thing he ate every day since he announced he was applying for U.A. Still, Inojin worked hard to make it, so despite being sick of the taste, Naruto dug in.

"The others aren't trying to get into U.A." Shikadai, Inojin's best friend, said as he walked up to the counter. "Everyone here knows you're the only one who has an actual shot at being accepted. We've got to make sure you're in the best shape possible."

"I'm fifteen, not a toddler," Naruto muttered around a mouthful of his breakfast.

It was annoying, but ever since he received an invitation to take the Entrance Exam, his fellow orphans had been doing everything they could think of to help him get into the most prestigious hero school in Japan. They justified their over-the-top help by claiming it was payment for everything he had done for them.

I don't want payment, Naruto glared at his bowl of oatmeal, sticking another spoonful in his mouth.

In the days following his parent's death, he had found solace creating a story from strange dreams he had at night. He posted the first few chapters online at the behest of his fellow orphans who all said the story was amazing.

Naruto didn't know why his story was so popular. In a world filled with amazing Quirk's, he didn't think people would be interested in a story about shinobi with superpowers. However, after the views had reached the hundred thousand's he had talked to the Director of the orphanage about actually selling the story. It was only natural for him to spend the profits making the orphanage a better place when the money started rolling in.

Musutafu wanted nothing to do with the "Bad Seed" orphans. They were the sons and daughters of villains who had been arrested or killed. Tainted and beyond help, the city spent the least they could get away with funding the orphanage, and before Naruto's story, they were barely scraping by.

Pushed into the shadows. Ridiculed for things we had no control over. Yet people wonder why so many children of villains become villains themselves. Naruto was so caught up in his thoughts he didn't notice his hand tightening around the spoon he was holding.

He had spent his money on the orphanage because it was the right thing to do. The kids who grew up here deserved to live just as well as anyone else. Naruto didn't want a reward. Or for the others to feel like they had to repay him for giving them what they should have had in the first place.

"Hey, Naruto?" Shikadai held up his phone. "It's already 7:40. You only have twenty minutes to get to U.A."

"I know," Naruto replied, setting down his empty bowl. He looked down at the white shirt and black track pants he slept in.

No stains, he nodded and headed for the door where his sandals and bag were waiting for him. Sleeping in clothes he could take the test in was brilliant. It gave him an extra hour of sleep before he had to get up.

"Good luck!"

"You can do it, Naruto!"

"We believe in you!"

Naruto tried to imagine that his cheeks weren't burning red, as more and more of his family started shouting. He quickly pulled his sandals on and grabbed his bag.

"You guys are too much!" he called over his shoulder as he ran out the door.

Outside there were a few of the younger kids playing the yard before school. Naruto winked at them and vanished in a burst of speed. Wind slapped against his face as he rocketed through the streets toward U.A. high. Public displays or Quirk's were against the law, except in cases of self-defense, so he kept off the main roads and to the back alleys as much as he could. When that wasn't possible, and he had to cross an open street, he made sure to move so fast that to any other person, he was just a blur.

There one second and gone the next.

Technically he was breaking the law, but Naruto wasn't displaying his Quirk. In fact, he was making sure it wasn't on display. He didn't think the police or the teachers at U.A. would see it his way though, so he stopped a block away from the school and walked the rest of the way at an average speed.

He stopped at the steps leading up to the school. Being this close, he could truly appreciate how awe-inspiring the building was. From a distance, the H-shaped multi-story glass building was majestic, but up close, there was a feeling in the air.

This...this is where heroes were born, Naruto thought and took his first step towards the rest of his life.
