The sound of a newborn baby crying was heard. Mary immediately went to find out what was going on. Laying on the grass, naked, dirty and abandoned was a newborn baby girl. She must have been first born and Mary could guess what happened. Her parents; probably her father; had abandoned her because he wanted a boy.
"You need a name little one," she said, "and I know exactly what I'm going to call you. I'll call you Heaven because you are a gift from GOD."
With that, Mary picked the baby up and walked into her house.
"Is that Him," Joseph asked.
"Does this look like a Him to you," Mary retorted, "No. I found her on the grass. She was abandoned."
"How old is she," Joseph asked.
"She doesn't look any older than a few days," Mary told him, "I named her Heaven."
"You named her? Of course you did," Joseph said affectionately- a smile playing on his lips.
"She needs a home. She needs a family. She needs love.""
I'm not saying to abandon her," Joseph said, "Maybe we can take her to an orphanage. They'll find her a good home."
"I'm not going to take her to an orphanage any more than I would take Him to an orphanage. GOD meant for me to find Heaven."
"How can you be so sure of that," Joseph asked gently.
Heaven started to cry again. Mary filled a basin with water and put her in the basin to wash her off. She wrapped her in a warm swaddling blanket and fed her all the while singing to her. It seemed to sooth Heaven. Joseph sighed affectionately knowing that he wouldn't get his way on this one.
"Mary," Joseph said softly, "I'm concerned about this. You're already four months pregnant and what are people going to think? Also can we handle raising two children five months apart?"
"I don't care what people think," Mary intoned stubbornly, "I won't leave her abandoned again. She needs us."
Just then, Mary's mother Ann came into the house.
"Is that the baby," she asked delighted.
"No. He is still inside of me," Mary laughed, "This is Heaven. I found her abandoned on the grass at the side of the road. She needs a home, a family, love and I won't allow her to be abandoned again. I already love her."
"Can I hold her," Ann asked.
Laughing, Mary handed the baby to her mother.
"What's so funny," Ann asked gently.
"Nothing," Mary said, "It's just that I remember asking you if I could hold the baby when you and father brought home Elisabeth and now you're asking me if you could hold Heaven."
Ann smiled.
"That actually is funny," she said.
"You know," Joseph said, "I'd like to hold her."
Smiling Ann handed Heaven to Joseph. That was the moment when Joseph fell in love for the second time.
After five month had passed Mary and Joseph took Heaven with them to Bethlehem. They were offered shelter in a stable in the inn and while Heaven slept soundly Mary went into labor and delivered Jesus at 3:42 AM. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and gently placed Him in an empty manger. Heaven woke up hungry. Mary fed her and Him one on each breast.
"You must be exhausted," Joseph said, "I don't mind taking care of them for a while. Why don't you get some sleep?"
Mary nodded. She fell asleep for a few hours.
The next day the four of them went to be counted.
"How far apart are they two of them," the king asked Joseph referring to Heaven and Jesus.
"They're five months apart," Joseph replied, "She's adopted.
"What of Him," the king asked.
"My wife just gave birth to Him 18 hours ago," Joseph explained.
The king nodded and dismissed them.
"Well that was easy," Mary said.
Both the babies were asleep.
That night Joseph had a dream. He woke up and told Mary that they had to go to Egypt.
"Then," she replied, "We will go"
It was a long journey to Egypt. By the time they arrived Heaven was already crawling. Joseph built a house for his family. Until it was done they slept in a tent outside. It was a 3 month project before it was done.
Finally the house was built. When they moved in, Heaven said her first word.
"Pwetty"
"Wow," Mary said, "She's an advanced child. Seven months old and already talking."
"Crawling too. Don't forget crawling," Joseph said ruffling his daughter's hair.
He couldn't believe he wanted to bring her to an orphanage when he first met her.
