Many years ago on October 23

In a house in the desert, two people are standing on the porch, the woman is holding a baby that is sound asleep in her arms.

"He is perfect, I will call him Yorak," the woman says fondly looking down at the child.

"I have a suggestion Krolia, how about Keith?" the man states, placing his hand on the baby's hair. The baby already had what looked to be a mini mullet of jet-black hair, quite unusual considering he had just been born.

"Keith," Krolia says softly, staring down at the child, "Yes it suits him."

Just then the baby, now called Keith, yawned revealing a full set of teeth including large canines, that no newborn should have.

Present: the lounge in the castle of lions.

Lance and Hunk can be seen playing space checkers on one of the couches, pidge is hunched over her laptop looking at something that appears to be specs for an alien spaceship, and Shiro is leaning back on one of the couches, eyes closed after a long day of mental exercising and a recent spar with Keith who was still on the training deck sparing with the training robot. Soft clashes of blades could be heard coming from the training room.

All of the sudden, everything went dark, multiple startled cries of surprise woke Shiro from his sleep. He opened his eyes only to be met with darkness, the only light visible it that from Pidges laptop and the soft light coming from the space checkers board.

"What just happened?" Lance asked

"The lights went out." Pidge stated monotone.

"Wh-Whats wrong? Are we under attack?" Hunk questioned nervously.

"I am sure everything's fine," Shiro said, trying to calm the yellow paladin's nerves, "did anyone bring their bay-" Shiro was cut off by the lounge speaker coming to life.

"Sorry about that paladins!" Allura's voice spoke from the ceiling.

"Ah, yes so sorry paladins! That was my bad I forgot that in order to update the castle systems I needed to power down some parts of the castle, my bad!" Coran's voice chirped happily

"It's fine, we are just glad to know everything is alright" Shiro responded loud enough for the Alteans to hear

"Wait, if you powered down systems does that mean the doors too?" Pidge asked, think about Keith, "Keith could be stuck in the training room."

"Heh, serves mullet-head right for being such an antisocial," Lance chuckled to himself, "maybe he will learn his lesson that team bonding is more important than training."

"Not to worry number 5! The doors are still functioning, right now only the lights, navigation systems, and training programs have been shut down!" Coran responded happily. "Alright now I am going to shut off the castle intercom systems so the process will go faster!" Coran stated quickly before the intercom shut off.

"Well that's good," Hunk sighed in relief, "should we go look for Keith to let him know what is going on?" he asked the group.

"Nah, I am sure he will find his way here or something," lance said nonchalantly, making a move on the checkers' board.

"besides how exactly would we find him?" Pidge added looking back at her screen, "Its pitch black!"

"He will be fine," Shiro stated unconcerned, "He has always been able to manage in the dark pretty well."

"What do you mean?" Hunk began to ask but was cut off by the sound of the lounge door sliding open.

"What's going on?!" Keith asked sounding alarmed and out of breath as if he ran all the way to the lounge from the training room.

But that is not possible. He would have run into something if he had and we would have heard him running onto a wall at full speed. Was he already heading here? Pidge thought, still looking at her computer, she thought it unnecessary to turn in what she guessed was Keith's direction because she wouldn't be able to see him anyway.

Lance however did not have the same thought and turned toward his rival's direction to make fun of him for not being in the lounge and understanding what was going on. That's why, when pidge began to ask how Keith had gotten to the lounge so fast, she was cut off by a startled gasp from lance.

Before she could ask what was wrong, Lance asked, "DUDE! What's with your eyes?!"

At this, pidge turned around to look in what she assumed was Keith's direction, expecting to see nothing she replicated lances gasp from moments ago, because where she assumed Keith was standing she saw a pair of violet eyes slightly glowing in the darkness.

Then she saw, what she assumed was Keith's eyes, mold into an annoyed look, and Keith's voice asked, clearly annoyed, "What does that even mean lance?"

"Your eyes-" Lance was interrupted by Hunk before he could make a sarcastic comment "Are glowing." Hunk finished.

"What?" the eyes shone in confusion.

"You. Eyes. Are. GLOWING!" Lance said, jumping from the couch and rushing over to Keith, at least pidge, hunk and Shiro could only assume that's what happened since all they heard what the sudden swishing of fabric and rushed footsteps.

"What are you-", Keith's began but was cut off by a sudden CLUNCK, a whooshing of fabric and then WHAM!, followed by a soft "ow" from lance.

"Lance are you alright?" Shiro asked concerned.

"Yeah I just-" just then a soft chuckle came from the direction of Keith, however, you couldn't know for sure because the eyes were gone, probably closed, pidge thought.

"What are you laughing at mullet head?!" Lance yell annoyed.

"Nothing, just you eating dirt," Keith chuckled, "man that's the funniest thing I have seen in a while."

"Keith," Shiro said firmly.

"Sorry" Keith said still chuckling

"Are you alright lance," Shiro's voice changing, most likely because he moved his head in the direction of lance, "that sounded like a pretty nasty fall."

"Yeah, I'm fine," lance said, "I am more hurt over the fact that my leg could have been broken and Keith would have just been laughing!"

"Your leg isn't broken, I can see it!" Keith said defensively, "stop being such a drama queen."

"I'm not a drama queen! You're a dra-…wait did you say you could see my leg? You can see my leg?

"What do you mean? Of course, I can your leg! Just as I saw you face plant after forgetting how stairs work." Keith responded chuckling.

"How can you see my leg?" Lance asked.

"With my eyes." Keith said sarcastically.

"Wha-" lance trailed off…

"What lance, why are you looking at me like that?" Keith asked.

"Because it is pitch black in here man." Hunk interjected.

"It is?" Keith asked sounding confused.

"Yeah!" pidge stated excitedly, suddenly displaying her interest. "That's so cool!"

"Uhhh…." Keith said, not knowing how to respond.

"Relax guys, Keith has always been able to see in the dark," Shiro stated trying to calm everyone down, "but not to this extent" his voice changed again, he had moved his head to face where Keith was, "I wonder why your vision got better?"

"I dunno." Keith stated. "to be honest I had no idea the lights had been shut off, the only reason I came here was because the training simulator shut down."

"You have always been able to see in the dark?" pidge asked, incredulously.

"And you didn't tell us?!" lance added.

"Well…" Keith trailed off again, words seeming lost on him under all the attention.

"We think it is like a version of Alexandria's Genesis" Shiro explains, "it when a person's eyes turn purple during infancy. With this condition comes other odd traits."

"But that's a myth, no person has purple eyes," Pidge said "well, except Keith"

"Yeah that's what I thought and then lo and behold I met Keith who had violet eyes. On top of that, he could see in the dark" Shiro said.

"Yeah plus a bunch of other weird things." Keith mumbled.

"What type of things?" Pidge asked

"Yeah tell us! It'll be a good way to pass the time until the light comes on!" Hunk said.

"Yeah why don't we tell them," Shiro said, presumably to Keith, "It'll be a good bonding experience besides, they know nothing about you."

After a long silence, Keith said, "fine." He despised the idea of talking for that long and about him non the less, but Shiro was right it's important to bond, besides they should know his abilities, so they know what he is capable of on missing.

-Authors note: Thank you for reading chapter 1 of Differences! This is my first-time posting fanfiction and I am a terrible writer, so I apologize for the grammatical errors and weird wording. I do plan on writing more chapters for this story depending on how this chapter is received
