Perseus: Protector of Demigods
It has been a year since Kronos was defeated. Percy was excited to get back to camp and spend time with Annabeth, but when he is betrayed by the one he loves Percy must leave camp and find a new purpose.
Chapter 1
Percy stood on half-blood hill breathing a sigh of relief that it was finally summer. It had been a year since Kronos was defeated. Percy had spent the school year at home with his mom and stepdad. It had been a rough year as now that he was considered one of the greatest demigods of all time every monster out there wanted to be the one to defeat him. Percy lost count of how many monsters had come knocking in the past year. He would be getting a break now though. A whole summer safe behind the borders of camp and some quality time with his girlfriend.
Annabeth had been in New York the past year working as the official Architect of Olympus. Percy though, had not been able to see as much of his girlfriend as he wanted to though. Annabeth had always said she was too busy with rebuilding Mount Olympus. No matter she had promised to take a break over the summer and spend time with him at camp.
Percy reached the Poseidon cabin and began unpacking his bag when he heard her voice. "Percy", he turned around thinking his girlfriend had arrived at camp. It had been so long since they had seen each other, and all Percy wanted to do was hold and kiss her. When he turned around, however, he realized that his girlfriend was not there, but rather an Iris message.
"Annabeth," he said a bit surprised, "Is everything ok."
Annabeth bit her lip looking nervous, "Of course, everything is great. I'm just finishing up work for the day."
"Great, when will you get to camp," Percy asked.
"The thing is Percy; I'm not coming to camp."
Percy's hear started to sink, "But why, we said we were going to spend the summer together. We haven't seen each other in forever. You promised."
"I'm sorry, but there is just so much to do on Olympus, plus I can't leave someone else in charge of the projects. We are adding some new statues in Aphrodite's temple and she is very particular about them…"
She kept rambling on and on avoiding eye contact. Percy noticed she had begun to play with her cap of invisibility. She only did that when she was nervous…or lying.
Percy interrupted her ramblings, "Annabeth, what's the real reason you're not coming to camp."
Annabeth looked startled, "What do you mean Percy, I just told you I am really busy."
"Don't lie to me Annabeth. You're breaking your promise to me. The least you can do is tell me why." He crossed his arms waiting for an answer.
Annabeth looked defeated. "Alright Percy, I have been really busy lately, but the truth is…oh Percy I met someone else."
"Someone else?" Percy asked not believing what he was hearing.
"Ya," she said dreamily, "he's an immortal son of Hephaestus. Mother assigned him to help me with the rebuilding project. He is just so smart and sweet. He adores architecture too and has been helping me design and build some of the plans."
As Annabeth rambled on about the guy Percy could feel his heart breaking in his chest. Even though Percy had impressed Athena with his wish from the gods at the end of the Second Titan War she still did not consider him an appropriate match for her daughter. Apparently, the goddess had taken matters into her own hands to introduce Annabeth to a more suitable match. As always, Athena's plan had succeeded.
"I'm sorry Percy, but I'm just in love with him. I can't help it. I hope we can still be friends." Annabeth said with a smile.
Percy didn't know what to say. He was heartbroken, but he didn't want to show it. "Sure Annabeth," he heard himself say, "We can still be friends."
"I am so glad Percy. Have fun at camp. See you later Seaweed Brain." And she ended the message.
Her last words had hit him like a bullet to the heart. He had loved her. He gave up godhood and immortality for her. And she leaves him for someone else. For the rest of the afternoon Percy stayed in his cabin just letting the tears roll down his face.
