Chapter 3: First Day at Signal

Principal Garnet Gleam was a very nice woman and smiled at him when talking to Glynda about his new therapist coming to the school at designated times. Bastion remembered the man from yesterday. Dr Fire Woods. He was a kind and understanding man who had been informed on Bastion's situation and past. He'd promised to keep everything he was told a secret, it was a part of his oath when dealing with patients but he made them, him and Glynda both more comfortable with his promise.

"Well Mr Goodwitch," said Gleam. Bastion remembered how yesterday at the Child Protection Office, he'd been asked questions and so had Glynda. It took longer than his appointment than with Dr Woods. In the end though he now held the last name of Goodwitch with Glynda as his official guardian and caretaker until he came of age at twenty one. He snapped back to paying attention to Gleam when she started speaking again, "Welcome to Signal. Your Homeroom teacher is Mr Qrow Branwen, he teaches weaponry including building them and using them. He's protective of his student but also is one to let his students learn on their own. You'll be in good hands. I hope you enjoy your time here at Signal. Feel free to come to me if you have any problems," she smiled and he nodded.

Glynda was relieved that everything had gone so smoothly in just a couple of days. She walked with Bastion to the front doors where Axel of all people stood. "Hey man, how's it going? I'm your buddy for the week and your best friend for the rest of your life," said the cheeky red-headed fox Faunus with a big grin.

Bastion blinked and looked at Glynda who was smiling, "Headmistress Gleam asked if you were acquainted with anyone and since you already knew I Mr Lee, I put his name forward to be your buddy for the week," Glynda explained.

Bastion frowned a little bit, "It sounds very convenient. Too convenient."

"Hey! Miss Goodwitch only has the best intentions for you man. The buddy thing is actually a system in this school for new kids. I knew you, you didn't know anyone else. Would you rather Miss Goodwitch buddy you with a stranger?" asked Axel, who was a bit testy now.

Bastion looked ashamed of himself, Glynda was trying to do right by him, "I'm sorry Miss Goodwitch, sorry Axel. It's just really hard because…I'm not used to it…Well, that sounds lame."

Axel cooled down at the apology and Glynda looked relieved. "I get it but I already promised that I'll be your friend and that I won't betray you. Ok, just give me a tiny bit of trust, a tiny bit and we'll work from there," said Axel. Bastion nodded and Axel grinned.

"Well, I'm glad that that's sorted out. Bastion, I hope you don't mind but would you be willing to let Axel walk home with you? I don't want to damage your teenage pride by coming to pick you up and most likely I will have work to do."

"Uh…sure, it makes sense as I still don't know my way around yet," nodded Bastion. He was glad that she had phrased it in such a way that it didn't sound like Axel was babysitting him on the way home.

"Good-bye Bastion, have a good day," said Glynda, patting him on the shoulder. Axel nudged him hard.

"Uh...oh. Good-bye Miss Goodwitch. See you after school," said Bastion a bit awkwardly. Glynda smiled and walked off, going to prepare for Beacon.

"Come on, let's go," said Axel with a grin. Bastion nodded and was then practically dragged off to their classroom.

"Mr Branwen is old but cool. He was part of team STRQ back when he was in Beacon, they were awesome but there was an even better team before them, so I've heard. Well, here's our homeroom," said Axel as he finally stopped outside of class number 06. He pushed the door open and Bastion got nervous as there were a lot of students already there, a good twenty at least. He ducked his head as they walked in.

"Hey Axel, who's the new guy?" called a feminine voice and Bastion looked up a little to see a beautiful girl with long, bright golden hair that faded to pale gold at the tips and had a cowlick sticking out on the top. She had fair skin and lilac eyes and a sunny smile to finish off her looks. She also wore an orange shirt, brown short-sleeved jacket and black jeans with fingerless brown and orange gloves and a small purple ribbon entwined in her hair and she also wore black and brown combat boots.

"So, this is Bastion Goodwitch. Bastion, this is Yang Xiao Long, our resident Knock-out Queen, rage monster and the woman with more fire than me," introduced Axel.

"Very funny Axel, how about I knock you out with my friend here, Mr Right Cross?" she asked with good humour. "Nice to meet cha, Bastion," she said cheerfully, holding out her hand. Bastion looked at Axel who nodded encouragingly. Yang raised an eyebrow at Bastion's hesitancy. "What's wrong?"

"…Nothing. Nice you meet you," Bastion mumbled, shaking her hand.

"Dude relax, if there's anyone I trust more than my own family it is Yang. She won't judge. She's great. She's loyal and fiercely protective, you can trust her," said Axel.

"Did…something happen?" asked Yang in concern.

"I…" said Bastion, his shyness and mistrust showing.

"Yang, he's had a really rough time. Just let him be. Show him that you are who I say you are. A friend," said Axel and Yang nodded, looking determined. Bastion noticed another girl sitting two rows blow Yang. She had vivid crimson hair with bright yellow stripes, moderate cyan eyes and fair skin, she also had pony ears atop her head. She wore a light amber shirt, hot pink jeans that cut off at the knees, white and pink high-tops and a dark blue jacket with brilliant amber lining. She noticed him and smiled.

"Hi there, my name is Sunset Shimmer. It's nice to meet you…Bastion, right?" she asked and he nodded.

"Hi," he said in a low voice after a slight nudge from Axel.

"Sunny here is our resident know-it-all, about everyone and everything. Her semblance is empathy. Just by touching you she can see your memories and feel your emotions. If you feel like there's something you can't tell me, don't why you wouldn't…talk to her, she's really good at what she does," smirked Axel.

"You would know, wouldn't you Axel?" she asked smartly and Bastion noticed that Axel and Sunset each couldn't hide the tiniest blush as they looked at each other.

"Alright, alright, settle down everyone," said a man's voice, making Bastion jump as he whirled around to see a man in his mid-thirties to early forties enter the room. He smelled slightly of alcohol, had greying black, spiky hair that looked like feathers, brilliant vermilion eyes, and slight stubble along his jawline. Along with a red, tattered cloak, he wore a grey dress shirt with a long tail, black dress pants and black dress shoes. He also wore a ring on his right index finger, two other rings on his right ring finger and a necklace with a crooked cross-shaped pendant. "I'm Qrow Branwen, yer homeroom teacher this year, I'm also your weapons teacher. I see we've got a few new faces. Goodwitch huh? I know the woman who's takin' care of ya. You don't have a weapon, so you'll be making one from scratch," Qrow informed Bastion who nodded timidly. "Easy kid, I don't bite. Sit down next to Mr Lee."

"Yeah, he doesn't bite, he pecks your eyes out instead," said Axel with a snicker, sitting down. All Qrow did was look at him with a frown and Axel held up his hands with an innocent grin on his face, "I didn't say anything teach."

"Sure kid, tell it to Taiyang, who despite his denial was born yesterday," he said.

"Ouch," said Yang with a tiny grin. She leaned over to Bastion and whispered, "Taiyang is my dad. Our teacher is my uncle…" she seemed to find this humorous though Bastion wasn't sure why.

"Hey, Miss Xiao Long, no whispering in class, save it for lunch-break," said Qrow with a frown.

"Sorry," she said and turned her attention to him completely.

"Alright everyone. This is the big year. It's gonna a be the year you kids not only go through strenuous tests of aura, semblance and leadership but there's also Hell Week, in ten months from now. We've got mock fights, teamwork tactics and a dance coming up this year as well. This year will make or break you. You'll either graduate with honours and then go on to one of the four schools for Hunters and Huntresses or you'll fail miserably and be stuck as a nobody for the rest of your lives. So get ready for the year of your life. Mr Goodwitch, you're down here with me. The rest of you, take out your weapons from the weapons area. Check them over and start brushing them up," said Qrow, satisfied that he had their attention. "Come on Mr Goodwitch."

"Yes sir," said Bastion, heading down to his teacher.

"Ok, Miss Goodwitch said that you've read a book or two on weapons, any thoughts on what you want it to be?"

"Um…I kind of want something that is both long range and short range…for…versatility and options in…uh…combat…" he trailed off.

Qrow sighed, he'd been warned about Bastion's problems so he'd have to go slow. "Alright, good thinking. How're you physically?"

"Uh…ok, I'm still slightly underweight but getting back to normal. I was originally quite fit before Miss Goodwitch found me and before…" he trailed off again, shuddering. Qrow once again sighed and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Kid, you're gonna get better but you gotta put in the effort otherwise what Glynda does for you, what your therapist and anyone else does for you isn't going to mean spit. It goes both ways. So suck it up and try. Now, since you seem to be as you say, quite fit, I reckon you could work with most weapons. Ever shoot a gun?"

"Um…I shot clay pigeons for a year or two once I was old enough…" Bastion replied, remembering that it was probably the one decent thing his uncle had allowed him to do, that or he hoped Bastion would kill himself by 'accident.'

"I guess that'll work. So any other weapon you're good with?"

"Um…"

"Kid, stop with the ums, it's annoying. Be confident even if you don't feel it. Now let's try again."

"I can use swords, it was a practice my father started and I simply continued until I left for my old boarding school and I used a sickle on a farm while on vacation with my….uncle….once, I was good at it," said Bastion, he was intimidated by his teacher. His uncle once again had let him touch a dangerous object, hoping that he'd kill himself.

"Guns, swords, sickles… hmmm. Let's test you out with some different weapons and we'll see what suits you best. We'll do that after school. Right now, take these notes, blueprints and study 'em. Also read the first three chapters of this book," said Qrow, handing him everything.

"Yes Professor," said Bastion quietly, going back to his seat. He sat back down next to Axel and opened up his new notebook to start working.

Axel didn't disturb him but he did keep an eye on him. He saw that Bastion was taking the given work seriously and had the majority of it done by the end of the class. "You're fast with classwork huh?" he asked as he led Bastion their next class.

"Yeah. I like learning."

"Great, well, here we are, Professor Xiao Longs' Class, History of Remnant, Hunters and Huntresses. He's an ok guy, just lame in every way."

"You can say that again," said Yang's voice as she walked up to them with Sunset just behind her. "He's my dad, and honestly, without my sister and me, alongside Uncle Qrow, he'd be lost. "He has a fear of a certain word, I'll tell you that later," she said, walking into the classroom with a grin.

"She has a sister and two relatives all at the same school?" asked Bastion softly.

"Yeah, a younger sister, name's Ruby Rose, they're half-sisters. Same dad, different moms. You'll probably meet her later a lunch," said Axel, finding his seat and pulling Bastion down to sit next to him. Bastion nodded in understanding.

A boy with green hair and brown eyes walked past them and then out of nowhere he pulled hard on Axel's ear! Bastion's jaw dropped in shock.

"OW!" yelled Axel, rubbing his ear and glaring at the boy who laughed and did it again. "Why you…!" yelled Axel, fire starting to surround him. The guy laughed and made to do it again when he got a punch to the jaw, but not from Axel.

Bastion hated bullies, having had too many in his own past to put up with it. So when the guy had tried a third time he'd acted with that punch. It felt good. "Stop it!" he said, standing up in front of Axel. Axel stared at him in shock, so did the bully.

"Don't get involved newbie!" he growled, making to shove Bastion but Axel was having none of that. He grabbed the guy's arm and heated up his hand causing the bully to howl in pain. "AAAAAHHHHHHHH!"

"Leave Bastion alone and leave me alone, got that Dario?" he asked with a growl, his hair on fire now. The boy glared and was about to retort when the door opened and the teacher walked in. Bastion watched him as he looked around at what was happening.

Taiyang was a man with blond hair that had two small strands sticking out from the top and blue eyes. He had a soul patch and small stubble along his jawline. On his right arm was a tattoo of his emblem, which resembled a heart. He wore brown cargo shorts with a dark brown belt, black shoes, a red bandana on his left arm and a brown leather vest over a tan dress shirt with the right sleeve cut off. For armor, he wore a metal spaulder, leather vambrace and a brown fingerless glove all on his right arm. He also possessed a rather muscular build and lightly tanned skin.

"What's going on?" he asked.

"Dario Brown was pulling Axel's ear. Bastion stood up to him and Dario made to shove him but then Axel stood up for Bastion," said Sunset, standing up and explaining the situation.

"Mr Brown, detention after school. Everyone else, sit down. Mr Lee, see the nurse if you have to," said Tai.

Bastion didn't have a favourable impression of his teacher due to his handling of the situation and he frowned.

Axel nudged him, "Thanks."

"You're welcome," he whispered back. The lesson wasn't bad and neither was the lesson afterwards, taught by a kind teacher name Professor Kale Petal. It was after that lesson that he was called to the Counsellor's Office where Dr Woods was waiting for him for their hour long session. That was when Dario saw him and he smirked, it was payback time….

By the time Bastion left Dr Woods office it was lunch and he found Axel waiting for him. He felt slightly odd that someone would wait for him, it wasn't unpleasant, it was slightly welcomed but he also remembered that Axel was meant to take care of him, he was his 'buddy' for the time being after all. Though his offer of being his friend seemed genuine so far.

"So, how was it?" Axel asked.

Bastion shrugged, "Ok, I guess. It was nothing heavy, he just wanted to get to know me for now before we start on the heavy stuff."

"Sounds like you've got the right counsellor," said Axel with a grin. "I could recommend a better one, she's a Faunus, has red and gold hair, very pretty and…she's standing right behind me isn't she?" Bastion nodded with a slight smile on his face at the situation.

"Thanks for the compliment Axel but Dr Woods is one of the best, he has a semblance that allows him to bring out a memory version of the patient so that they can face themselves. So if you ever wanted to hit yourself it's a great opportunity," said Sunset with a smile. She went on ahead of the boys who looked at each other.

"You'll be ok man," said Axel. Bastion just nodded, he knew it was going to get harder.

He was right for as they enter the cafeteria a lot of students turned to look at him, some pointed and some whispered. Dario was standing amongst his friends with a smug grin on his stupid face. "Hey, what do ya know, it's the head case. How's your head feeling newbie? Ya need to go see a shrink instead for emotional damage?" he mocked.

Yang and Sunset stood up at that and Axel roared in anger, his fire coursing all over his body, "Shut the hell up Dario!" he snarled.

Bastion had been hit by Dario's words and was standing stock still, any progress he'd made throughout the day went flying out the window, he'd retreated back to being shy and under confident. He hung his head, cringing. What he heard next was the sound of something hitting something else. He looked up and saw that Axel had sent a fiery punch to Dario's face and that Sunset was standing also in front of Dario with her hand raised and she, alongside Axel was breathing heavily. Dario had a very distinctive and very red slap mark on one side of his face and a first degree burn on the other. It wasn't over for Dario, Yang had wound up for a punch straight to the face, causing Darion to go crashing into the wall and Axel sent a fireball his way afterwards.

"Don't pick on our friend," said Yang, crossing her arms.

Bastion stared as the other two added in their own words of defence.

"Don't talk about him that way again or you're dead," said Axel, a fireball in each hand.

"If we're talking about head cases Dario, how about I use my semblance to see all your secrets? Maybe you're the one with the need for a shrink,' said Sunset, her ears twitching in agitation. Dario slowly got up and ran as fast as he could from the cafeteria only to bump into Qrow who was frowning.

"Mr Brown, detention again."

"I was attacked! I get detention and yet I was attacked!"

"You verbally abused a student who needs help with his past, you taunted him about it. You had no right to say anything about his therapy to anyone. The last thing he needs is stares and whispers impending his progress." Qrow looked over at Bastion and company. "Mr Lee, Miss Shimmer, Miss Xiao Long, well done on standing up for a friend. However violence isn't always the answer. I want a two page essay each on how you could have handled that better. You can do it while I'm working with Mr Goodwitch on his weapons choice. Now, get to eating," said Qrow with an amused glint in his eye.

Bastion was slightly shocked, yes Professor Branwen had punished the three but he'd given them such an easy punishment, it also enabled them to stay until he was out of school. What was going on?

Yang took him gently by the arm and sat him down, "That's Uncle Qrow for you. He tells it like he sees it and doesn't tolerate bullying. It's because we stood up for you that we got a light sentence, trust me, I've had worse given to me by him for other things. So just forget what that idiot Dario said and ignore him."

"We're here for you Bastion," said Sunset. "An essay is nothing when it comes to standing up for a friend."

"But…none of you even know me…how can you say we're friends?" asked Bastion who was now playing with the food Axel had gotten him.

"Man, we just can say it because it's true. Everyone's got their problems, some more than others. I lost my real parents when I was a kid. Dad took me and another orphan, my older sister in as his own. He told me that as long as you've got a lot of support and a soft place to fall then it'll be ok, no matter how bad it is or how long it takes. It can't take any longer than growing older him," he finished his serious speech with a light-hearted crack.

"Me, I've got abandonment issues. My Aunt Summer, Ruby's mom raised me as her own, she died when I was five and Ruby was three. I then found out that my real mom had left me when I was a baby. I've been searching for her ever since but other than that it's all good for me," said Yang with a grin.

"I used to be a bully myself, I was talented and arrogant and I ruled the school I'd come from through fear, blackmail and everything else you can think of. Then I got my semblance and I also got a good friend who showed me the error of my ways. I finally was able to empathise with those I'd mistreated and I finally knew what true friendship was. Since then, I've changed so much and Bastion…It's ok to not know what friendship is or not know how to trust people. You learn how and it makes it even better, so don't worry," said Sunset with a smile.

Bastion didn't know why they were telling him parts of their pasts but for some reason brought tears to his eyes and his shoulders shook. He felt three hands on his back and shoulders and looked up to see his…his friends smiling at him. He gave a tentative smile back, maybe, just maybe…it would all be ok.
