Truth or Dare

Hi, here's a little fic inspired by some tasteofdarvey's dialogues posted on Twitter. Thanks to catsballeths for helping me with this and giving me a lot of advice. Also thank you to darvey247 and n_bluesilk who were the first ones to read it and encourage me to post it.

Harvey: "Paula is not the one."

Mike: "Because Donna is?"

Harvey: "I didn't say that."

This conversation has been in Harvey's mind for a week already and he can't get rid of it. What if Mike was right? What if he actually sees Donna "that way," what if the reason all his relationships always fail is Donna, his inner desire to just be with her? Because she is his everything. They are a team, they are as close as two people can be without being "that."

If he needs to talk, she is there, no matter the time, no matter the reason. He can call her to ask her her opinion about a case or to simply chat about something stupid from the firm like Louis in his prune juice or his mud baths.

They go out for breakfast or dinner from time to time. They can't call them "dates" but they surely enjoy each other's company.

She is his favorite companion for a drink late at the office or at the nearest bar. A glass of scotch feels way much better when she is by his side talking about everything and nothing at the same time.

They even flirt sometimes, when nobody can see them. They look into each other's eyes until someone smiles and breaks the contact. He stares at her when she is wearing tight dresses or her cleavage is a little bit too exposed.

She is beautiful! He can't deny that. But more than her physical beauty, he feels connected with the beauty of her soul and the singularity of her personality.

He is so grateful to have her, sometimes he can't even understand how she manages to put him first almost all the time.

What if she is actually the one? Or what if she is actually just his soulmate in a friend's way?!

But he can't deny that there's something else... that night that she kissed him... he felt... surprised, yes, but also a warm sensation inside. It wasn't just the obvious desire that invaded his body at the touch of her lips and the caresses provided by her hands, he actually felt complete.

He lied when he told her that he didn't feel anything besides the physical effects of the touch of a beautiful woman. He was mad because for a second he became a cheater. Because at the end, it's not the fact that she kissed him, it's the fact that he actually kissed her back. He deepened the kiss. It felt so damn good.

But something inside him broke when she told him that she didn't feel anything either. That little hope he might have kept inside. And that's unfair, he knows it. He doesn't have anything to offer her. He is emotionally messed up. Dating his therapist wasn't the best decision ever.

But now Paula is out of the picture... maybe it is time to look closer at this relationship they have...

Harvey is thinking about this while drinking his second glass of scotch, he can feel the amber liquid burning in his throat while his thoughts are burning in his head.

He looks at his watch, it's almost 9:30 PM. Lately he avoids getting home early. He doesn't like the feeling of loneliness that surrounds him there. But he's done for the day. He has to face his reality and live with it.

He finishes his drink, grabs his coat and walks to the elevator.

Ray is already waiting for him.

Donna left the firm early today, she had a date with a guy she recently met but even with a couple of glasses of wine, it turned out to be terribly boring.

It's 10:00PM and she is already at home.

She changes into an oversized shirt and a pair of comfy pants, sits on her couch, opens a new bottle of wine and starts to read the book Louis borrowed last week.

The book isn't as interesting as she would have liked, but this keeps her mind away from thinking about Harvey.

Even if things are "back to normal", whatever normal means for them, she is trying to keep the distance from him. The kiss between them is still the elephant in the room.

He isn't with Paula anymore. He chose her over the woman he was "in love with." And even if she is grateful for that, she is sure that was just because of his loyalty as a 12 years friend.

The second glass of her bottle of Cabernet is gone and added to the ones she had during dinner, she is starting to feel a little tipsy.

She wonders if Harvey is already at home.

She wants to text him. But maybe she shouldn't. But the truth is, friends text each other all the time, and since Harvey tends to call her every time for the slightest thing, a text won't hurt anybody.

D: "Hey."

She stares at the screen for a couple of seconds while she pours the third glass of the burgundy liquid.

He doesn't respond

Maybe he is out

Maybe he was on a date...

A deep breath scapes her lungs and places her phone on the couch.

She is about to take the book again when a *ping* distracted her

It's Harvey

H: "Hey."

Donna smiles and is thinking about how quickly she should respond.

Well, they are friends. There's no rule about how much time she should wait between each text.

D: Did I wake you up?

H: No, actually I was about to listen to some jazz and get my last scotch of the day.

D: That sounds better than what I am doing.

H: What are you doing

D: Reading

H: Boooring

Donna laughs.

D: Hey! Reading is not boring! But I have to admit this book is.

H: Next time you get bored come over and we can have some drinks together.

He is surprised by his very own answer.

She is shocked and tempted to accept the proposal.

Donna doesn't respond... but gets up from her couch and grabs her coat.

The wine in her veins is driving her to do this.

She can't wait to see Harvey's face.

15 minutes later she is outside of his door.

She knocks.

30 seconds later Harvey opens the door.

He is confused, he isn't expecting anyone.

"What are you doing here?"

"I'm bored", Donna chuckles.

Harvey notices she is drunk

"But it's midnight for god's sake"

"I know, but I missed you", Donna laughs

Harvey raises an eyebrow and adds "I missed you too. Now go to bed and let me sleep"

Donna fakes a surprise face.

"I am joking, come on in!"

She enters his apartment laughing.

Seriously?! He thinks. This is not helping with his confusion and his feelings from earlier.

"Do you want a drink? I can see that it wouldn't be the first one for you"

"It would be the first scotch for sure."

A couple of minutes later he is sitting beside her in his living room.

Scotch surely tastes even better with her.

Gordon's disc is on the background

It's 2:00am and he realizes how time flies when she is by his side.

They are back at the good old times, talking about everything and nothing at the same time.

For a moment there's a comfortable silence between them, when suddenly Donna says:

"Truth or dare?"

"What?!"

"Truth or dare?"

"What are you playing, Donna?"

"I am playing truth or dare! Isn't it obvious?"

"You are drunk", Harvey laughs

"I am and so are you"

"Can't argue with that"

"Now, can you finally decide if it is true or dare?", Donna rolls her eyes.

"Truth"

"Let's see... Did you ever have a crush on one of your friend's moms when you were young?"

"Hey! I am still young!"

"Seriously?"

"Ok, did I ever tell you about Mrs. Garfield? She was a beautiful redhead…"

Donna is truly entertained listening to him.. she really enjoys his company. It seems that 12 hours at the office aren't enough for them. For their particular relationship.

She is already convinced that they can't be more than friends but at this point, she is good with this. The intimacy they share is deeper than the one most of the real couples share.

Another hour passes, she knows it is time for her to go.

Even with the amount of trust she has in Harvey, she doesn't want to spend the night there.

It's not like she never hasn't thought about that before… but today is not the day.

"Ok Harvey, this has been fun but I have to go."

"It has been a great time, Donna. Good that you were bored. The bad thing is that you are leaving me here drunk and alone." Harvey laughs. "Why don't you stay the night? I can take you to your place in the morning. I can sleep on the couch."

His proposal sounds sincere and pure and she blushes.

"No, Harvey, it's ok. I will get a cab."

"At least let me call Ray. He told me he will be working late due to some clients."

"Thanks Harvey, that would be nice."

10 minutes later Rays is outside Harvey's building.

Donna is grabbing her stuff and it's at the door about to say goodbye when Harvey says:

"Truth or dare?"

"What?"

"Now I am the one saying, truth or dare?"

"Truth."

"Do you want to kiss me?", Harvey grins.

"Maybe I will change to dare."

"I dare you to kiss me."

"Stop!" Donna is now grinning. "You will regret it in the morning."

Harvey has this flirtatious look in his eyes.

"The only thing I regret is that I have spent the last 3 hours with you and I haven't kissed you before."

"Harvey…"

"Donna…"

"Are you flirting with me, Mr. Specter?"

"It wouldn't be the first time."

Donna doesn't know what is happening, but they can surely blame the alcohol in the morning.

She looks him directly in the eyes then looks at his lips and that's all the input Harvey needed

He leans to kiss her.. it's a soft and short kiss.

He wants more, he needs more. But he doesn't want to push her.

She seems shy and suddenly adds:

"I have to go, Harvey."

"Why?"

"You know why... Ray is waiting outside!"

Harvey grins shyly.

"Good night Harvey."

"Good night Donna."

She turns and leaves.

Harvey leans and the doors and says to himself:

I am finally ready to look at you "that" way.

And then closes the door.

Because it is in the mundane things, like this night with Donna, both drunk in comfy clothes playing games, where the sublime can be found.
