John/Four

'I love you. I always...' Her last words echoes in my mind. The phone slips from my hands. Clang. It hits the floor hard. Sam, who is standing next to me, grabs it with his telekinesis.

'John?' He asks, shocked and worried. 'John!' He yells. I don't hear him. Everything is a buzz. All I hear is Sarah's voice. I love you John. It was all worth it. Promise me you'll win. Behind all the noise, Sam is yelling. 'Four!' It was all worth it. Or was it? Sam's going crazy. He grabs my shoulders and shake me.

'John! JOHN!' I finally hear him and turn back.

'What the hell John?' I look into his eyes and think of Sarah. Surprisingly, I feel empty. Devoid of any emotion.

'Sarah's dead.' I say bluntly. He freezes, eyes blank.

'You're kidding. Six... Adam... Marina...' His trail of thoughts are not heard to me. Far away, I can see Nine and Five walking towards us.

'Johnny?' He calls. I look at him.

'Nine, Sarah died.' He actually stumbles, talking a step back.

'Eat shit. You're lying.' But in his eyes, I see the pain and sadness. And pity for me. Which I don't want. Five doesn't say anything. He just looks at me. I stare back. Daniela carefully approaches us.

'Is something wrong?' Sam opens his mouth to answer when I stop him.

'No. Nothing.' She cocks her head.

'Why are you so grim?' Nine is looking down and Sam is quiet. I don't miss a beat.

'Sarah, one of our allies, is dead.' Her eyes widen and her hands tremble.

'Is... is it true?' I nod, not even trying to soften the blow. And I go straight to the point.

'Daniela, the other human Garde will be coming. You will take them to a hidden place and keep them safe. The final fight will happen soon. Adam will go with you.' Her face pales.

'I... I obviously can't! I don't even have legacies.' I turn away. I try to remember when Ella touched me with her telepathy. And I copy it with Ximic. Telepathically, I make contact with Adam, who is coming to us.

You will protect the human Garde, right? He seems shocked by my contact.

John? Oh John... I... I know what's coming. And I don't want it.

Answer me Adam. He flinches at my sharp tone but agrees.

I will. With everything I have. I cut contact and turn to Daniela.

'One of us will help you. You will leave as soon as they come.' And ignoring Sam and Nine, I walk towards Walker.

'We need to take their warships. We will leave three days after Six's group arrives.' She looks at me with a little stricken look.

'Well, yes. It can be arranged. How many people do you need?' I shake my head.

'Only me, Nine, Six and Sam will go. The others will stay and guard here or work on other missions.' She nods with a slight frown. Without waiting for an answer, I step away.

'Is everything alright?' She calls behind. I don't turn back.

'One of us, Sarah Hart, a human with no legacies, died. There are no damage to us except a slight decreasing of firepower.' It kinda satisfies me, seeing Karen Walker lost in words. Feeling my friends gaze behind me, I walk through the gates and into my room.

Sam

As John walks away, I hurry to Walker's side.

'What did he say?' I ask. She seems... shaken. She doesn't answer. Instead, she asks me something weird. 'He is John, right? Number four?' Nine has caught up.

'Yeah.' He says. She lets out a shuddering breath.

'It didn't seem like him... he asked to go to steal a ship three days after the others arrive. And... he said that Sarah is dead and there is no damage except decrease of firepower.' I suck in my breath.

'That... doesn't sound like John.' Nine agrees.

'No shit.' I sigh deeply. I know we have to get to John but I have to make sure the others are okay.

'Hey Nine, come here.' After getting away from Agent Walker and Daniela, I call Six.

'Sam?' Her voice is wobbly and nervous. Despite the circumstances, it's good to hear her voice.

'Six.' Behind Six, I hear Mark yelling something and Adam calling Marina's name. 'When are you coming?' I ask her, pushing down the thousand words I have for her. She breathes deeply.

'Tomorrow morning, I think. Marina is hurt. But she seems fine. And we're... taking... Sarah.' I can feel Nine tense up beside me. Not wishing to continue this uncomfortable talk, I tell her goodbye.

'Be careful, Six.' She hesitates before telling me something she meant to since Sarah's last phone call.

'Sam... tell him I'm sorry. And please tell him that it's my fault. Not his.' The he in this is definitely John.

'I will.' I manage to say. And she hangs up. 'Damn.' I say.

'Well, damn.' Nine replies.

'What the hell are we gonna do?' I mutter, not particularly to anyone.

John/Four

Sarah Hart is dead. It somehow didn't hurt. I kinda knew it. When Ella told me it would hurt to me the most, she meant this. I feel hollow. I sit down and stop pacing around in my room. Now, I have nothing to lose. All I have to do is to make sure none of the others dies. Which is going to be easy. From now on, I don't need help. I'll do what I can until I fall. I don't care what happens to me. As long as I kill Setrakus Ra and I have no other scars in my ankle I don't care. No more casualties. No matter what happens to me. No matter what I have to go through. I'll do it. I'll end this. Even if I die, even if I don't get to see a happy ending. From this moment, I'll do what I have to. No hesitating. I'm going to do whatever is needed to end this. So much has fallen. One. Two. Three. Eight. Henri. Sarah. Countless more. For Henri who died for my foolishness. For eight who died because I brought us together. For Sarah who died because she loved me. For the fallen. Three died with no chance to fight back. I am number four. I will fight back. And it's time to finish this.
