Chapter 1: Crash Landing
Mando should have known his departure from Nevarro after his battle with Moff Gideon was too easy. As soon as he left the planet the alarms on his ship sounded that he was being targeted by three TIE fighters. A moment later his ship was hit with a laser shot that nearly took him out of his seat and threw the child off of the seat to the floor behind him. The child released a cry causing him to instantly turn around to pick the little one from the ground and set it in his lap.
"Don't worry we'll get through this," he said plainly.
Another hit jolted them both and Mando quickly began maneuvering the ship to evade their shots.
"We need to get into hyperspace." He said out loud to no one in particular. "The shields won't hold."
Another hit from the enemies nearly shook the child out of his lap again. So the baby turned around to hang onto him as tightly as it could and closed it's eyes. It's large ears pointed down in fear.
"It's ok," he said, wrapping a large arm around it's small frame while he quickly calculated their jump to lightspeed.
"Almost there," he said once the calculations were in place.
An alarm sounded again indicating they were locking on. This was his last chance before his shields went down. Mando hit the launch button and the stars ahead of them seemed to turn into bright streaks as his faithful ship jumped to light speed. He breathed a sigh of relief and sat back in his chair looking down at his foundling son who looked back up at him with so much trust in his eyes.
"I told you we would make it."
BAM
Just as the ship came out of lightspeed it was knocked by the first meteors in a meteor field.
"Shit!" Mando cried desperately attempting to maneuver among the vast space rocks.
The ship was knocked about back and forth between the rocks. Suddenly the ship's shield gave out. Mando had been certain he could get them away from Moff Gideon's TIE fighters. He was less certain about a meteor field. He barely missed a large meteor that would have destroyed them only to be hit by three to four smaller ones. Looking at his instruments Mando could see they were almost out of the meteor field. But then a large meteor smashed into his right engine and it began to fail. He held the child closer to him as he desperately attempted to get them through. Several more hits and finally they broke into open space. Unfortunately that was also when the ship lost power.
Mando allowed the ship to float along as he took a minute to regain himself. Finally he stood up and walked over first to buckle the child in the pilot seat and then to turn on the emergency power reserves. The ship had sustained significant damage and with one engine all but gone. This was worse than the dog fight he had gotten into just off of Tatooine. He had to find somewhere to land and soon. Looking at his star maps he could see there was a planet nearby. But it wasn't ideal. The icy planet of Dakryn. Any other time it might have been perfect for them to lay low on. The entire planet for the most part was uninhabited with a population of less than a few thousand across the entire planet. It was mainly forests and marsh and covered with snow 80% of the time.
But that's not what he needed right now. He needed a fairly populated planet with a repair facility for his ship. Scanning the planet he was able to find a small settlement on the west side of the largest continent. He made for it attempting to contact any communications tower that might have existed. Unfortunately either in the battle or the meteor field his communicator had been damaged. So they would be flying in blind.
"Ok," he said to himself, driving the ship towards the planet.
The ship was moving strangely and making lots of noises he had never heard before. He began to clearly see the surface of the planet as they flew into its atmosphere. Suddenly an alarm went off and the engine failed completely causing the ship to spin into a free fall. Then the ship lost power again. Mando acted quickly, jumping from his seat and attempting to activate the emergency reserves again. They buzzed and barely came on.
The child squealed with glee now that it wasn't being thrown all over the place. He fought to keep his balance, making his way back to the captain's seat. The ship continued to spin and Mando thought he could see mountains close by. That wouldn't be good if they crashed into them. He took the controls and fought to stabilize the ship. He was finally able to see there were indeed giant snowy peaks they were dangerously close to. He thought he saw a smoke spire off to the side of the ship. The trees were becoming more distinct. He continued fighting to keep the nose of the ship up as its belly began to graze the trees. Mando looked to see large crystal like rocks jutting out of the ground ahead of them. There was no way to avoid them so he did what he could and turned to throw his body across the pilot seat with the child doing his best to protect it from impact. He felt the impact then a piercing cold as everything went black.
Sometime later, Mando opened his eyes to complete darkness. His entire body hurt more than he could remember for a long time. But he didn't feel as if he were on the icy ground of the planet. Was he dead? No, he couldn't be...He felt alive if incredibly sore. His shoulder seared with pain. It felt broken which wasn't good because it was his blaster hand. He suddenly realized that despite his injuries he felt strangely warm and….naked? Mando gasped realizing he was completely without his clothing armor or his helmet. What's more there was something, no someone equally naked pressed up against his body. Mando felt his face growing hot with embarrassment and anger at the same time. Suddenly a voice came from the darkness and he felt a warm hand gently rubbing his arm.
"Relax," a feminine's voice came from the darkness. "You are safe here."
Her voice was right above his ear. He could feel her warm breath across his neck.
"I'm not going to hurt you." The voice whispered. " I had to warm you. You are suffering from hypothermia. Your ship crashed into the river."
"Where is the child?" he demanded though his voice came out as a hoarse croak.
"It is safe and alive." The voice responded. "Now sleep, you need to heal."
Mando's mind spun in all directions. They had crashed into a river. His ship was probably scrapped. The child was alive, he hoped the voice was telling the truth. But all of that meant nothing because he had failed. His mask had been removed and he had been seen. He was shamed. After everything he had gone through. He could no longer be a mandalorian. But he couldn't focus on that at the moment. The bed was warm and the female body next to him was equally warm and soft. He felt her pull thick fur like covers over his shoulder which stung but felt comforting at the same time. Then he felt himself sinking back into blissful unconsciousness. His body relaxed and he nodded off.
Mando opened his eyes to find himself staring out of the mask of his helmet. He looked around the room he was in. It was a comfortable, rustic bedroom with a fireplace off to the side. He attempted to sit up but winced, his shoulder was indeed broken. It hurt to turn his head but he managed to and saw his shoulder wrapped and put into a sling. His clothing was still off but his helmet was on which confused him. Had he put it back on or had the female. Was it a female? He slid the helmet off with dispair it wasn't right that he had it on. He could never put it back on again. He looked down at the end of the bed and saw his clothing less his amor folded neatly with a note on top. He leaned forward and opened the note
Get dressed and come out when you are ready. Do not forget your helmet. Your honor is intact, as is your virtue
That last comment made him blush. But what did it mean his honor was intact? How was it? His mask had been taken off of him? It took him some time to get all of his clothing on. His body was sore beyond memory and almost every part of him sported some kind of bruise or cut. But all of his wounds had been dressed and bandaged. The question was by who. He needed to find out, and he needed to find out how the child was. After dressing he hesitated before sliding his helmet on knowing he would probably take it off later. Then he limped to the door and activated it to slide open.
The door opened into an equally rustic cabin with skins hanging on the walls and a giant stone fireplace where a large fire was warming and lighting the great room. His eyes zoomed into the center of the room where a petite figure sat on fur skins with her back to him. At first all he could see was a long thick blond braid that fell down her back over a cape of iridescent pinks and blues. He couldn't see her head well.
"Good you're awake," the familiar feminine voice said calmly.
"What did you mean by my honor is intact?" He started off with. "Do you know what I am?"
"Yes," she said plainly, " You are a Mandalorian…"
"And you took off my helmet...How is my honor intact?" He asked, quickly growing angry.
The female audibly sighed and stood up. She turned around to face him causing him to freeze. He was instantly glad he had on his helmet to cover the shock on his face and because he had nearly made a terrible mistake.
Before him stood a female Mandalorian. Her under suit was grey with a white vest and long white loin cloth that stretched down between her knees. Her armor was a bright shining gold with intricate swirls carved into it. Her helmet was silver with the T portion gold and on either side of her helmet were what looked like metal wings stretching up and back from her ears.
They stared at each other for a long moment. Mando looked down and realized she was cradling the child in her arms bouncing it gently as a mother would her child. The child looked at him and cooed happily. He didn't seem the worse for wear. Though he did have one ear wrapped in a bandage. Mando tilted his face back up to hers.
"Yes, I took off your helmet," she said matter of factly watching him. "But I did not see your face as I also did not let you see mine when you woke up, that's why it was dark. I would not dishonor you so. But I had to save your life, you were freezing to death."
"T-thank you," he stammered.
"Now, shall I fix you some breakfast? You are probably starving, and we need to talk." She asked in a pleasant tone.
