Okay guys, this is the first side story from Iron Maiden. I am working on another story right now but this would not leave me alone until I wrote it so I hope you enjoy. It is sugary and has all the feels.
These will not be released in chronological order but they will all be put on here so check back for further shorts. I love you 3,000!
The day had been quiet, peaceful. The sun was shinning softly through the trees, and the enticing smell of lunch, along with cookies mixed with the spring scents and was filling the air. Steve looked up from the sketch that he was working on as he heard a car pull up outside the London home. A slam of a car door followed by the front door opening, he heard a soft echo down the hall. "Nana!" He couldn't keep the smile from his face as he heard the little voice followed by Peggy's laughter.
"How are you my darling?" Peggy asked, little giggles reaching his ears.
"Good! Can we play a game?" Little Isabel asked, her voice high and chipmunk like.
Peggy laughed. "Soon sweetheart." She said. Her attention was obviously drawn to the other visitor. "How are things going at the company?"
"Busy." Tony sounded tired. "I can't thank you enough for watching her for a while."
Steve's chest clenched a little hearing his friends voice again.
"It's no trouble at all." Peggy said.
"Call me if you need anything." Tony said. "But everything should be in the bags."
Steve could practically see the patient smile that would be on Peggy's face as she assured him they would be fine, they already had plenty of things stocked for Izzy's stay already. He got up quietly, moving down the hall, still staying out of sight. As he neared the end of the hall, he could see the mirror in the foyer and he could see a young Tony kneeling on the ground, a four-year-old Izzy standing, facing him dressed in a mini Def Leppard t-shirt and jean shorts, her little sneakers scuffing at the ground.
"You be good okay?" Tony said.
"I promise." Izzy said, a tiny little lisp noticeable as she spoke.
Tony smiled. "I'll call you tonight." He said. "I love you, tons."
Izzy grinned as he brushed a few locks of hair out of her face. "I love you 3000."
Steve froze.
Tony looked surprised for a moment, but he grinned. "Wow!" He said. "3000, huh?" He hugged Izzy tightly peppering her little face with kisses, making her giggle before he stood to leave.
Though it was far from the first time that he had heard those words from her, Steve could barely process that this was the first time she actually said the words.
Tony gave Peggy a hug and a kiss on the cheek, and with a final wave to Izzy he left. Steve watched Izzy looked from the door to Peggy and back a few times with wide eyes, little mind torn between her joy of being there and her strong attachment to Tony. It was one thing to be an hour away from Tony like she was used to, it was another thing to be in another country.
"How about some lunch?" Peggy asked with a smile, seeing the look of panic aiming to distract from a possible meltdown.
But Steve knew this was Izzy and watching Izzy smile as she nodded, perfectly content, he knew there wasn't anything to worry about.
…
The day had passed simply with Peggy keeping Izzy entertained. After lunch the two had gardened for a while; Steve observed the activity, seeing the exact moment Izzy became bored and began making up her own game, running around laughing while regaling Peggy with the exciting adventure as it unfolded. Needless to say, when it was time to come in for dinner Izzy was filthy.
Steve had offered to start dinner while Peggy took the little girl to get cleaned up. Izzy had looked up at him from Peggy's side, neck craned back to actual see him (it still amazed him how little she was) and offered a bright grin which made his heart clench tightly.
Ushering the girl out quickly, Peggy offered him a gentle smile before she disappeared around the corner. She knew how badly it hurt to have to keep his distance.
A little while later, Peggy came back into the kitchen and said she would finish making dinner. Steve nodded and left to head back to his study thinking about a drawing that he wanted to finish. As he passed the living room, he saw Izzy was video chatting with Tony, her dark hair still wet after a shower and wrapped in a little pink bath robe with soft green dinosaur spikes running from the edge of the raised hood down the back. Smiling faintly, he proceeded down the hall.
He was nearly finished with his current sketch when he felt someone watching him. Looking up, it took every bit of his training to not jump at seeing Izzy standing right next to his chair.
How had he not heard her?
Her big brown eyes weren't looking at him though, they were focused on his drawing. "That's me." She said pointing at the drawing, careful not to touch it because of the charcoal pencil. "And Nana."
It was her helping Peggy plant flowers in a pot on the porch.
Steve watched her study the picture, her hood now pushed back, a memory pulling at his consciousness.
~ "What are you working on?"
Steve looked up from his position on the bench, overlooking the lake close to the compound. Izzy was leaning over his shoulder, trying to get a look at the drawing in his hands. She smiled warmly, brown eyes catching the sunlight and making them look almost golden. The artist in him was fascinated by the color.
"Nothing special." Steve replied.
Izzy raised an eyebrow but shrugged it off as she dropped onto the bench beside him. She had come out to the compound that morning worked up after having a fight with Tony about a recent mission where she had gotten a little banged up. She had been avoiding going home for the last few hours.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
She nodded, looking out at the water.
Knowing she would talk if she felt like it, Steve went back to drawing. It didn't take long before he could feel her eyes turn to him, watching the sketch form. They stayed that way for a while before he ventured a glance up, seeing her totally absorbed with watching him draw the scenery before them, looking calmer, raven locks falling in silky curls over her shoulder. He just continued to draw, not reacting in the least when she rested her head against his shoulder. ~
Little Izzy stood at his side quietly for about 10 minutes, just watching him draw, absorbed with it before Peggy found them.
"Bel, dinner." Peggy said.
Izzy looked up, trance broken and grinned. "Yay!" She said and raced past Peggy.
Steve looked up at smiled at Peggy. "How long were you there?" He asked.
"A few minutes." Peggy replied. Her eyes softened. "It's okay to spend some time with her Steve."
Taking a breath, he nodded in acknowledgement before getting up to follow her out of the room. Dinner was a loud affair, much more so than the two were used to since their kids had grown, but it was definitely not an unwelcomed one. Izzy was happy as a clam chatting away about whatever came into her head, some of the things she talked about were car engines and circuit boards, but that wasn't surprising.
After dinner was the challenging part. The four-year-old in Izzy kicked in.
"I'm not tired." Izzy protested stubbornly.
"It's time for bed anyways." Peggy replied, gentle but firm.
Steve could just see the beginnings of a meltdown forming from his sport leaning against the doorframe watching his wife deal with their 'grandchild', who was pouting adorably. However, Peggy was no-nonsense tonight and even Izzy could see that.
"Story?" Izzy asked after a second, hopefully.
Steve let out a small breath of relief.
"Okay, one story." Peggy said walking over to sit on the sofa, Izzy running to climb up beside her, snuggling in tightly.
Steve went to finish the dishes while Peggy told Izzy a story, a kid friendly version, of Captain America and the Howling Commandos. As he finished putting the last of the dishes away, he heard Peggy singing softly.
Walking back in, he saw Izzy laying in Peggy's lap, eyes getting heavier as Peggy rubbed her back and continued to sing the soft lullaby. Steve recognized it as the one he heard Peggy sing to their children when they were still small, but also the one he first heard Izzy singing to Peggy.
Peggy looked up and smiled at him. Walking over, Steve bent to scoop the little girl up, cradling her close to carry her upstairs to her bedroom.
As Peggy rose to follow, Izzy's little arms wrapped around his neck sleepily, hugging on tight.
…
Steve walked down the quiet hallway, listening to the nurses shuffle around and the soft jingle overheard announcing the arrival of a new baby into this world. As he approached the correct room, he heard a very family voice singing softly inside.
As gently as possible, he opened the door and stepped inside as his eyes focused on Izzy sitting in the hospital bed. Her hair, which she had kept longer, was pulled into a soft messy bun on top of her head and she looked tired, but nothing took away from the job on her face as she gazed down at the small bundle in her arms as she sang the lullaby that Peggy had taught her.
Looking up as she finished singing, she smiled brightly as she saw him. Walking over, she held out one arm and he bent to wrap her in a hug, careful of the little one between them. Resting her eyes in his shoulder, he heard her small sniffles as she cried quietly.
When she was composed enough, they separated so he could pull up a chair to the bedside as she finished wiping her eyes.
"I'm so glad you're here." She said smiling.
"I wouldn't miss this." He replied smiling gently.
Izzy sniffled and smiled before looking down at the bundle in her arms. "Would you like to hold her?" She asked.
Steve felt his heart stutter just a bit. "A girl?" He said with a smile.
Izzy nodded and held out her precious daughter. Steve cradled her gently, gazing down at her beautiful little face, easily seeing picking out some of Izzy's delicate features in her little face.
"She's perfect." Steve said a smile.
Izzy smiled warmly. "She is." She replied.
"What name did you and Johnny decide?" Steve asked.
"Natalie." Izzy said quietly. Steve looked up and she met his gaze, both remembering Natasha. "Natalie Margaret."
Steve smiled. "They would both be honored." He said.
Izzy nodded with a soft smile as she reached out a gently brushed a finger over little Natalie's soft baby hair. "I miss them." She said quietly.
"I know." Steve said. "Me too."
After a moment, Natalie began to squirm, so Steve passed her back to Izzy. "I brought you something." He said as Izzy rocked her daughter back to calm.
Pulling out an envelope, Steve opened it for Izzy to reach in and pull out an old drawing. She gasped softly and tears immediately began to fall as she gazed at the drawing of her at four years old planting flowers with Peggy.
There will be plenty more reactions later on, but this one was most prevalent in my brain. Let me know what you think.
