For as long as they had known, Catra and Adora had lived in the Fright Zone, raised as cadets to one day join the armed forces of the Horde. Most of their days were spent either training or studying for more training, but despite the monotony of it all, they managed to find their own sort of fun.
One afternoon, after their training session was over, the two best friends snuck through the halls of the Horde fortress to a secret little spot of theirs. It was always quite a challenge to reach, what with all the soldiers patrolling the halls. But finally, they managed to make it.
Soon, both girls were rushing up the stairs to their secret spot, one of the balconies jutting out from the Fortress's service level. Catra was getting the lead out of the pair of them, surprisingly. Adora seemed to actually be struggling to keep up with her.
"Come on, Adora!" Catra encouraged, grinning at her friend.
"Slow down will you!" Adora said, panting as she tried to make her way up the stairs.
Catra rolled her eyes. "And you're supposed to be the ace in our class."
That was true, but the class ace had just spent most of the day pushed to the brink in combat drills. She was in no shape to be beating Catra in a race. Eventually, the two girls finally reached their favourite spot, Catra jumping out of the hatch that led to the service balcony.
Adora soon joined her, closing the hatch behind her, Then she rested against the door, catching her breath. She panted heavily, knowing she was going to walk very slowly back to their quarters when this was all over.
Catra grabbed the railing and leaned over the roof while Adora caught her breath.
"See... Anything?"
And right on time, Catra nodded, as a squadron of Horde transport ships then flew over the Fright Zone. The massive cargo airships then landed at the loading docks near the fortress. As they flew over their heads, they cast great shadows over the area, like vast birds of prey.
This was one of Adora's and Catra's favourite little diversions to do. When Adora hoped she would make the rank of Force Captain, she wanted to do a bit of flight training so she could fly one of the ships herself. Or perhaps even one of the Horde's strike bombers?
The two girls stared as the large cargo ramps of the ships opened, teams of Horde personnel heading inside to unload whatever cargo the ships had brought. Most likely supplies and weapons from one of the army's northern outposts.
Adora was just fascinated by how the whole operation worked. She saw so many wondrous sights here in the Fright Zone, but she wondered what else she would see once she'd finished her training and was assigned to active duty.
As the two girls kept watching the transports, Catra noticed two of the officers who had been assisting with the unloading walking away together. They were holding each other's hand and smiling.
One was a woman with red tattoos and hair, several bony horns poking from her head. The other was a woman with violet skin and long silvery hair.
"Woah, never seen them before," Adora stated.
"I think they're Force Captains," Catra added. "You see the badges on their uniforms? They must have seen a lot of action in battles with the rebels."
"They look so cool!' Adora whispered.
The two women were even more fascinating to the girls than the airships had been. They seemed to be shining examples of what both young girls hoped to achieve in their future careers.
"Hey I think they're friends," Adora noted.
"Very close friends," Catra remarked. "Look how they're looking at each other."
"Wanna follow them?" Adora asked. "The transports are pretty much empty now."
"Sure, not like we've got anything better to do," Catra replied. "Let's go that way." She pointed to a long, square-shaped walkway between two nearby buildings. Adora didn't think it looked very safe, but she knew it was better than Catra's preferred method: swinging on wires.
"Okay," she said, climbing over the railing.
"Don't look down," she told herself, before taking a deep breath and running across the top. Catra followed soon after her, and then they were safely on the other side. Lucky for the blonde, her feline-like companion didn't notice her hesitation.
The two force captains walked to the edge of the building and looked around. Then they started talking. It looked more like they were playing some sort of game than talking, though, who could get the other's face redder?
Eventually, the taller girl with silvery hair grabbed her friends waist and pulled her in, pressing their lips together. The horned girl wrapped her arms around the other's neck and leaned into it.
Adora's eyes widened in surprise. "Woah what are they doing?"
"Are they... Eating each other?" Catra wondered.
The girls pulled apart, smiling, touching each other's foreheads and holding each other closely. Adora didn't know what it was... But it looked kind of cute.
"I don't think so," she said.
Suddenly, the taller of the two women looked up, having noticed Catra and Adora on the walkway above. "Hey! What are you two punks watching me and my girlfriend kiss for?"
Adora yelped and jumped back. Catra screamed over the edge, "Wouldn't you like to -"
"Catra!" Adora hissed. "Come on! They're Force Captains!"
The darker-skinned girl stepped back. "Yeah," she said, "I know." She'd already been punished by Shadow Weaver once today, she didn't want to deal with it again.
"Let's get back to the bunks," Adora said. "It's getting late."
Catra nodded. As they walked back, she held Adora's hand in the same way the two Force Captains had. Thoughts went through both of their minds. Should they try... Kissing was it? Were they as close as those two captains were?
After they both cared deeply about one another, both knowing that they had a special bond that no one else among their friends seemed to have. Perhaps... They were more than just friends to each other.
"Adora?"
"Yeah?"
"Are we girlfriends?"
The blonde thought for a moment. It was a strange word and yet... Adora felt it described her and Catra perfectly. "I guess we are," she said. "We are girls, right? And we're the best of friends."
Catra blushed softly. "Then... Do you want to try doing what those girls did with their mouths? That kissing thing?"
Shyly, Adora nodded. If they were girlfriends... They should really start acting like they were after all. She held Catra close, the two of them pulling each other as close as they could.
"I'm... I'm gonna close my eyes okay?" Catra replied.
"Okay," Adora accepted, as Catra shut her eyes tightly. Then... Adora kissed her.
It was a strange sensation. The feeling of Catra's lips pressing against her own was very pleasing. Adora kept holding Catra, feeling the feline kiss her back with tenderness, threading her fingers through her hair.
Eventually, the two broke apart and Catra held Adora close, giggling and touching foreheads with her.
"That... felt nice."
"It did, didn't it," Adora remarked.
"Two of us against the world?"
Adora nodded. "Always."

Author's note: This one was all Nat's idea I believe. They are so freaking talented, I swear. Anyway, the two random Horde ladies are just girls I made up for the fic lol. Though I was considering making them She-Ra AU versions of Korra and Asami. Anyways, enjoy the gay cuteness!
