Animal Cross Fanfiction.
Why not?
This is probably the only Mother's day fanfic I'm posting today out of the like four or five that I wanted to write. It's shorter than I wanted it to be but I love the Able sisters and they deserve this so here we are.
Sable is the best sister. When she told me that she felt like she had a family again, when my island, which I name in the story, became home to her, I was so very happy. And now we're here.
"Shh, you're going to ruin the surprise!" Label Able shushed her giggling sister Mabel as they stood hidden in the fitting room of the store, waiting for their older sister to arrive.
"I am not! I know when Sable is going to arrive, we still have another minute!"
"This is going to be the best surprise ever…" Label grinned.
"Sable is going to be so happy! You haven't visited in a while, she's been dying to see you." Label felt a twinge of guilt and put an arm around her sister.
"You know… You know I'm not doing that because I'm mad at you, right? I love you and Sable. I'm not trying to stay away on purpose, I'm just trying to make my way in the world."
"I know that, of course! Sometimes, though, Sable doesn't realize…" Mabel paused, running a paw through her quills.
"You know how Sable is. She gets in her head about stuff."
"She thinks it's her fault that I left, doesn't she?" Label looked so sad, Mabel almost didn't want to nod her head yes. But she couldn't lie to her sister.
"Sable just feels extra responsible for you. She understands now that you left because of your dream and we're both totally supportive of that, sis, but… But on the days she misses you most she can't help thinking that you wouldn't have left if she'd done things differently. I promise I don't think like that, but I can't control the things Sable frets about."
Label sighed, "No, I guess not… But I'm going to have a talk with her, after the surprise. She needs to know that I'm okay and that me leaving wasn't her fault or even, really, a bad thing. I know you guys support me but sometimes I think Sable still sees me leaving as a bad thing, even though it's been nothing but good for me."
"She just misses you, Label…"
"I know but-" The two sisters fell silent then, hearing the sound of the door open.
"Mabes? You in here? You're not normally the first one here but you weren't at home so I have to assume you're in the back. I wonder if ReeRee is going to stop by today. I was working last night and I have the best new patterns to give her." Mabel giggled at that before pushing her sister forward, out of the fitting room.
"Surprise!" They announced in unison. Sable looked shocked, mouth hanging open for a few seconds before she threw her arms around her little sister.
"Label! What are you doing here?"
"I came to surprise you! You didn't think I was going to forget mother's day, did you?" Sable clapped her hands over her face in surprise as she tried hard not to tear up.
"I didn't, I-" She burst into tears and held her sisters close.
"Come on, sis, you raised us. It's only right that we celebrate you today," Mabel said.
"You guys are the best," Sable sobbed, "I'm not gonna be able to see any customers today, I'm just gonna be crying the whole time this is so nice…" Label smiled and took her older sister's paws.
"Come on, we'll go into the back and get your makeup fixed, okay?" Sable nodded, squeezing her sister's paws. She didn't get the chance to see Label very often and it made her so incredibly happy that she was here now.
"Sable, can we talk about something?" Label asked as she fixed Sable's eye makeup.
"Of course." Sable had stopped crying but she hadn't stopped smiling. Angst Isle felt like home and the islanders felt like part of her family except for Mira but that didn't mean she wasn't so happy that Label was here.
"I know that you and Mabel support my dreams and passions unconditionally and I really appreciate it, but I need you to know that you didn't drive me away. I had to leave to pursue my dreams, I didn't leave because of anything you did. I love you so much, sis. I don't want you to be unhappy when you think about our relationship. You didn't do anything wrong, Sable. I'm lucky that you were my "mom" growing up." Label leaned forward and hugged Sable, and Sable tried her hardest not to cry again.
"I love you, Label…"
"I love you too Happy Mother's day, Sable…"
