Chapter One

RMS Carpathia

April 1912

I was beyond lost. In the last twenty four hours, I had fallen madly in love with Jack, and he had slipped through my fingers. I longed desperately for him, imagining him sitting next to me, holding my hand, kissing me. But it would never happen again.

So there I sat. I sat on the deck of Carpathia, looking down at the sparkling ocean. Every second, I was getting further and further from Jack. And then I thought about him again, and a little montage of him played in my head. His smile, his eyes, his hair, the way he brushed his hair out of his face when he was concentrating-

Someone tapped my shoulder and broke my concentration. "Are you Rose DeWitt Bukater?" The man asked.

I furrowed my eyebrows. I was sure I had never once seen this man before, and I didn't know who he was. But what I did know was that nothing good could come from telling this man who I really was.

"N-no, I'm not, sorry," I stammered. Even though it sounded like I was lying, I was sure I looked nothing like herself. I was pale white, my hair had lost its color and volume from being frozen, and I was covered in an old blanket.

The man crossed his arms as if he knew I was lying. "What is your name then, miss?"

I thought for a minute. Somehow he definitely knew I was lying. "Well, this is ridiculous. I'm under no obligation to tell you who I am."

"Oh, so then do you know where I can find Rose Dewitt Bukater?" The man asked with a smile.

"No, I've never heard of her," I said with a shrug.

The man nodded. "Well, have you heard of a Jack Dawson?"

"No," I said, and my heart sank.

The man must have been able to tell because he smiled and grabbed my arm. "You're coming with me."

The man was now pulling me away. "Hey! Wait! Stop! What are you doing?" I yelled, but the man wouldn't stop. "I've already punched a man in the face because he was pulling me by the arm. I'd hate to do the same to you."

Finally, the man stopped. "When you see where I'm taking you, you'll be glad you listened to me."

"And why is that?" I demanded.

The man sighed. "It's Jack."

I thought for a moment. I decided to listen to him and go with him, since it was worth the risk. We went down all the floors of the ship until we arrived in the steward's office. The man slowly unlocked the door and opened it. Standing there was Jack.

I gasped. "Jack!" I ran over to him and jumped into his arms, the same way I had when I jumped off the lifeboat. We held onto each other tightly in a hug before Jack kissed me passionately.

"Hi," he whispered, as he kissed me again.

"That's all you have to say? Hi?" I asked with a smile. "What happened?"

"I have an explanation, I really do," said Jack. "But we can't do it here. We have to get out of here."

"Where are we going?" I asked.

Jack smiled. "I'll tell you when we get there." He took my hand. "Are you ready to go?"

"Sure," I said. "I mean, I don't know where we're going or where you were or anything, but sure, yes, let's go."

Jack smiled. "I'll tell you everything, I promise," he said as he kissed my cheek. "Steve!"

"Who's Steve?" I asked.

"The man who came to get you from the deck," said Jack.

Steve entered the room, and smiled. "We ready to go?"

North Atlantic

April 1912

Jack and I were now in a little rowboat. Steve was in the front, and Jack had his arms around me, trying to keep me warm. "I thought I'd never be this cold again," I said quietly.

"I know, Rose. It's almost over, I promise," said Jack.

The rowboat finally arrived at another boat. This one was a small boat, almost like a day-sailer. "We're here," said Steve.

Jack climbed out of the boat and stepped aboard. He reached his hand out to me and helped me onto the boat. "Where are we?" I asked.

"All of your questions will be answered in five minutes. I promise," said Jack, kissing my cheek.

Jack took my hand and walked me to a little room with a bed. "Now can I ask?" I asked.

Jack smiled and sat down, and I sat down next to him. "Yes, now you can ask," he said.

"Where did you go? Where are we? Why didn't you come get me yourself? How are you alive?" I paused for a second. "I think that's all my questions for now."

Jack smiled. "I'm not from here."

"I know, you're from Chippewa Falls," I said.

"No, I mean… I was sent back to Titanic to get something important. See, I wasn't born in 1892," said Jack.

"You're not twenty?" I asked.

"N-no, I am," Jack stammered. "I was born in 2000.."

"Wait, what?" I asked confusedly.

"I was born in 2000, and in 2020, I was sent back to Titanic," said Jack.

"So you were sent… back in time," I said. "Is this some kind of joke?" It really did sound like a sick joke, but looking at Jack's face, I knew he was serious.

"No," said Jack. "I'm sorry, I'm really not being clear."

"That's okay," I said. I took his hands in mine. "Just take your time and tell me what happened."

"I was sent by my work back here to help get an important material that went down with the ship. Then I met you, and I fell in love with you, and… I had to figure out how to get you back," said Jack. "I knew the sinking was coming, but I couldn't say anything to you, and I'm so sorry about that."

"That's okay," I said. "Tell me more."

"Well, the biggest thing about going back in time is you're not supposed to change anything, so I had to be in steerage, and I couldn't get on a lifeboat, since I would be taking someone else's place… so I had to be in the water and survive. Finally I got back onto this boat, and I sent Steve to get you, since I couldn't be seen."

"What about me?" I asked. "How do I play into the time-travel thing? I mean, if not for you, I would still be marrying Cal and living unhappily."

"Well, actually, in every single timeline, you get away from Cal all on your own. You didn't need me to be able to do it," said Jack. I thought about this for a moment and got a feeling of empowerment. Jack was seriously telling me that, no matter what, I would manage to escape my toxic life? "But… there's something else I didn't tell you."

"What is it?" I asked, my thought process interrupted.

"Well, I don't exactly know how to tell you this, but you weren't supposed to live," said Jack. "You were supposed to die in the water, and I saved your life."

"Really?" I asked, frowning.

"Yes, I'm sorry," said Jack, and he took my hand. "But now that you're alive, I can't leave you here. I have to take you with me."

"Well, I meant what I said last night. When the ship docks, I'm getting off with you," I said with a smile.

"I love you," said Jack.

"You do?" I asked.

"Yes, I do," said Jack. "I love you. You're amazing, and beautiful, and kind, and wonderful, and I'm absolutely in love with you."

"I love you too," I said. Jack loved me back. I never thought I would see him again, never mind hear him tell me he loves me. I kissed him lovingly, and finally, there was a knock at the door.

"Jack, it's Steve. Boss wants to see you," said Steve.

Jack sighed. "I'll be right here." He took my hand and kissed it before leaving the room.

I could hear Jack's conversation with his boss from rooms away. "Jack, nice of you to come," said his boss.

"Hey, Joe," said Jack. "You wanted to see me?"

"Yeah," said Joe. "I just wanted to ask what the hell you were thinking."

"With what?" Jack asked.

"Saving that girl's life. It wasn't part of the plan, Jack!" Joe yelled. "We have to kill her."

I started to panic. I hardly escaped Titanic, and now I would be killed by some futuristic boss? Then I remembered, Jack would never let that happen.

"Absolutely not," said Jack. He ran out of the room and back over to his room, where I was still sitting on his bed. He blocked me with his body. "You're not coming near her."

"What other option do we have?" Joe asked.

"I'll take her with me. I'll make sure no one finds out about this," said Jack. "I swear, Joe, everything will be fine."

Joe sighed. "Fine. But we're going back now."

"Okay," said Jack. Joe left and slammed the door behind him.

"What was that?" I asked.

Jack smiled and kissed me. "Not important. What is important is that I love you."

"I love you too," I said.

Jack kissed me again. "We're going back to 2020 now."

"How long will it take?" I asked.

Jack smiled. "Five seconds. Do you want to go to the deck and watch?"

I nodded and took his hand. "Let's go!"

They stood on the deck, and I wrapped my arms around him. "I can't believe a few hours ago I thought I'd lost you forever."

"You'll never lose me," Jack whispered. "You ready?"

I nodded, and the sky flashed white and black for a few seconds, and finally everything stopped.
