Hi Guys.
I would just like to say before we start that the support for 'Nightmares' was absolutely amazing and I really appreciate it. This is my version of 4x17. For the purpose of this story, Mouse didn't go back to the Rangers, because a) I love him, and b) I love the moustead duo. Also, Jay and Erin do not 'take a break' at the end of the episode.
Enjoy!
'Halstead your wife is here.'
Now that is not something intelligence thought they would hear this early in the morning, or ever for that matter. It was only 9am and they were already knee deep in a drug lord case. Pretty much everyone choked on their coffee or dropped something, and everyone's eyes landed on Jay, as he too spat up his beverage.
'I'm sorry, my what?'
'Don't ask me. It's your wife she's claiming to be.' Platt said.
'I'm not married, I don't have a wife. Did she give you a name?'
'Abby,' Jay lowered his head to the desk and he groaned.
'She's not my wife. I'll go deal with it.'
He was going so well, he hadn't heard her name in years. After they ended it he started his new life in the police force and never looked back. Until now. He got up, walking past the teams curious faces as slow as possible, hoping that somehow she would disappear by the time he got there.
Knowing her she wasn't going anywhere.
Arriving at the bottom of the stairs Platt went back behind her desk, but was staring between him and her intently. Finally Jay looked up.
'Hey Jay, I was wondering if we could talk'. He nodded, not trusting himself to speak without throwing up, and lead her towards on of the spare offices, closing the door.
'What do you want abbey?'
'What, can't I just check in and see how my husband is doing?'
'First of all, I'm not your husband, we signed the papers. That was over 8 years ago. Secondly, you can't just show up without warning, I said we were done and I didn't want to see you again, so what the hell do you want.'
'Fine. I met a new guy. We are going to get married. But I need you to sign the divorce papers.'
'What do you mean sign them? We already did that….. wait, you didn't sign them!'
She just looked at the ground looking super guilty.
'Unbelievable. Do you know how much damage this could have done. I have moved on, I have my own life. And you still managed to screw this up for me. 8 years. 8 fucking years. And you're only telling me about this now.'
Jay was fuming. She could have screwed things up with him and Erin, something that was finally going good in his life.
'Look, all you have to do is sign them, my signature is on it already, so you can personally drop them off, and then I'll be out of your hair.' She said
'Fine.' Jay grabbed a pen off the desk in the office. He scribbled his signature on all of the lines that needed to be signed, not bothering to read them; the faster he did this the faster she would be gone.
'Done. Now go away.'
'Thank you.' She walked out of the office and turned to face him. 'You know, you really should read what you're signing.'
She pulled a gun from nowhere, held it to her head and pulled the trigger.
That was it. She was gone.
Jay didn't even have time to process what was happening before it happened. At the sound of the shot officers were coming in from everywhere, ushering civilians out. Jay was frozen. Everything seemed to be moving in slow motion around him, his mind still trying to figure out what the fuck just happened. He could feel his hands shaking, the blood on his face and clothes. He could hear the buzzing of the gate opening behind him. And the members of intelligence stepped on the stairs, but didn't move. He couldn't.
Jay stood staring at her body, until Erin moved in front of him. When he finally met her eyes, she could see the shock changing to pain.
'Come on, let's go back upstairs, clean you up'. The team moved up the stairs, after seeing no further threat, followed by Platt. Erin took Jay into the break room, passing by a very confused Mouse, who had been ordered by Voight to stay up in the bullpen in case there was a threat. Mouse waited for everyone to sit down at their desks and Erin to shut the break room door behind them.
'What happened.'
'The girl claiming to be Halstead's wife, they were talking in the spare office and Jay was yelling, then he signed some stuff, she walked out and shot herself in the head. Dead before she hit the floor. She said something before she did it. "You should really read what you're signing". That was it.'
'Damn. That woman has been trying to screw him over since day one'. Without any further explanation, Mouse got up and joined Erin and jay in the break room.
'Is anyone else really confused or is it just me?' Adam said
Mouse sat down on the break room couch next to Jay, who looked like he hadn't moved since Erin sat him down. Most of the blood was gone from his face, only a few spots she hadn't gotten to yet. Mouse gave her a look that said 'thanks, but I got this' and so she got up, squeezing Jays shoulder as she left.
'What did Abbey want.'
He stayed quiet for a minute. 'She didn't sign the papers.'
'The divorce papers?'
'Yep. From 8 fucking years ago. And she comes in today, with no warning, and just expects me to sign them.'
'Did you?'
'Of course I did. I need her out of my life.'
'Can I see them?'
Jay handed him the stack of paper and leaned forward putting his head in his hands.
'Jay did you read these?'
'No I wanted her gone so I signed as fast as I could. Why? What did she do?'
'Let me check if this is legit, then I will tell you'. He got up and hurried out the door back to his desk, jay following him
'Or you could give me my paper back,'
Once again the peaceful bullpen had been interrupted, and even more confused faces were staring at the bickering pair.
'Dude, if you don't let me do this, I will hit you.'
'Fuck you', jay said before sitting down at his desk.
'You're welcome', mouse mumbled, continuing to type away furiously at his computer.
'Jay, go home', Voight said. 'Take the rest of the day, sort out whatever this is about. Then come back tomorrow, ready to work.'
'This isn't something that's gonna be fixed overnight.' Mouse said looking up. 'Jay, always look at what you're signing. No matter what. There is so much in here that you missed. She screwed you.'
'I'm sure it can't be that bad, I mean she's not the smartest-'
'Jay you signed custody papers.'
'W-what?'
'Custody papers. For your 8 year old daughter. Dude this wasn't an impulse decision. She's attached a paternity test, which shows you as the father, and a suicide note.'
Jay looked even paler than before, and instead of holding in his lunch, he let it all out in the waste paper basket under his desk.
'Why?' Jay mumbled. Lifting his head back up. 'Every time, she fucking screws me over. What did I do, huh? Why does she come after me? For 8 years I haven't heard a thing from her, I thought I cut all ties. I signed the fucking papers, I destroyed the ring, I left every single mutual friend so she would have no way to contact me. She destroyed my life once and she just keeps coming back for more.' Jay was yelling by the end of his rant.
Mouse got up and started pushing Jay back towards the break room, but Voight signaled for him to go into Voights office, and he handed the case they were working over to Antonio before following. Mouse pushed Jay onto the couch and sat in one one the chairs in front of the desk, while Voight sat behind it.
'Who was this girl,' Voight asks.
Since it was clear Jay was not answering, Mouse took the lead. 'So what Platt said was kinda right, she was Jay's wife. We were all in the rangers together, and it went from there. One night when we got back, we all got super drunk and they decided to get married. They did that night. She struggled with the PTSD and flashbacks, so she relied on drugs, and then she got him to rely on them too. He would spend every night getting drunk and high, I tried stopping him but she is a manipulative son of a bitch. One night I got a call from her, said Jay od'd. Almost died. That was his wake up call, he let me help him get clean, and deal with it. And he was okay. But she kept trying to pull him back. Eventually we cut ties with everyone and moved back to chicago. Fresh start. Jay signed the divorce papers 8 years ago, but today we found out she didn't counter sign them. He signed them as quickly as possible without reading it. Unfortunately he missed the suicide note, custody papers and paternity test. And here we are.'
Jay stood up and left the office heading towards the locker room. 'Alright both of you take the rest of the day to figure out what you're going to do, then tell me tomorrow what you need.' Voight said.
'Thanks sarge. Also can you tell Erin that I'm gonna take him to my place tonight. I think this might affect his PTSD, it's better if I can watch him.' Mouse said. Voight nodded.
Mouse left the office and went to find Jay in the locker room. When he got there, he found Jay on the bench staring at the floor. It didn't even look like he was blinking.
'Come on buddy,' Mouse said, putting his hand on Jay's shoulder. 'Let's go home.'
