"Mabel, quick! We're gonna be late!"
"I know, I know!" Mabel walked out of the kitchen with a pancake in her hand. "Let's go! First day of sophomore year, here we come!"
Dipper rolled his eyes at his twin sister's enthusiasm, but quickly slipped his shoes on and stepped out of the house.
"Kids! Remember to bring back some eggs on the way back! I'm not paying you to be complacent!" Grunkle Stan shouted from the window. He wasn't paying them at all. The twins nodded back at him and walked down the sidewalk, Dipper following his ever-optimistic sister as she danced her way to Gravity Falls High.
As the two turned a corner, they almost collided into Grenda and Candy, two of Mabel's best friends. "Oh, there you are!" Grenda exclaimed. "We weren't sure if you were coming today!"
"And miss the first day of the best school year ever? I don't think so!" Mabel replied.
"We were just a little late," Dipper explained.
"Hello, Dipper." Candy was much quieter than Grenda and Mabel. She was much smarter, too.
Dipper smiled back at Candy.
"Oh no!" Grenda's low voice boomed. "We're gonna be late for school!" The group looked at each other for a second.
"Last one there is a rotten egg!"
"I made it," Dipper wheezed. "I made it."
"You made it last, bro bro."
"Still made it."
Dipper didn't get long to celebrate his success. The bell rang, and the four split up for their first lessons. As Dipper sat down at the back of the class, he could hear people whispering about something. He didn't need to look up to know who it was.
Pacifica Northwest, the richest, most popular girl in Gravity Falls. Her father owned almost every business in the valley, including the school. She herself was pretty, athletic, smart... and an asshole. "Well, well, well. If it isn't Dipper Pines. I was so sure your family couldn't pay for you to come back to school." The class laughed at Dipper's expense.
Dipper rolled his eyes. "School is free, Pacifica. Then again, you don't really have to think about money, do you? It's all just a fantasy to you."
"Hey! Don't try and step out of line. My father could fire your dear Grunkle Ford from here, and you wouldn't be able to do a thing about it."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah, really!"
"And how would you do that?"
"Simple. Just a little visit to the headmaster this lunch."
"Really? I don't think you could bother to pay anyone a visit, even your father!"
"Yeah, well at least my father still talks to me!"
Silence. Nobody could breathe through the tension in the air.
Dipper looked away, his face red and chest burning. His parents had left them with Grunkles Stan and Ford to help ease work tensions. They haven't talked face-to-face for almost a year.
At that moment, Professor McGucket decided to walk in. "Now what's all this racket going on in here, huh? Ms. Northwest, sit down please."
Dipper didn't move as the child celebrity made her way past his seat. He didn't move at all for the rest of the lesson.
"Hey bro bro, guess what?" Mabel asked as she sat opposite him in the lunchroom. Grenda and Candy sat on either side of her.
"What?" Dipper replied, unenthusiastically.
"No Dipper," Mabel whined. "You have to guess!"
Dipper rubbed his eyes and looked back at his sister, who was grinning madly. "Oh no."
"'Oh no' what? It's good news, I promise."
"I know that face. That's the I've-got-a-new-crush-for-the-week face."
Grenda and Candy nodded and laughed. "Yes," Candy said. "But there's more!"
"More?"
"Time to spill the beans." Dipper raised his eyebrows.
Mabel leaned in closer and whispered. "This girl's got a date!"
Dipper's eyes widened. "What? No way! On the first day? Who is it?"
"Jeff Norman."
"The short guy?"
"So? What's wrong with short guys?"
"I didn't say there was anything wrong, but why him?"
"He asked me out and I said yes," Mabel said slowly as if explaining to a child.
"Okay I get that, but why did you say yes?"
"SHHH!" Grenda placed a finger over her mouth. "He's here."
The four turned to face the entrance to the lunchroom as Marius von Fundshauser walked in, hand in hand with Pacifica Northwest. The two most popular kids, only making themselves more unattainable by dating each other. The three girls sighed, but Dipper turned back and ate his food. The girls followed the couple as they made their way towards the other end of the room. "They're so perfect," Grenda commented.
"I wish I was as perfect as Pacifica, I could hold Marius' hand," Candy whispered.
"It's a shame that such a nice guy would date someone like her." Mabel was leaning backward to get a better view of Pacifica.
"I honestly don't get what Marius sees in Pacifica. She's not that great."
Mabel sat straight back up. "Are you kidding? She's the captain of the golf team-"
"-head cheerleader-" Grenda interrupted.
"-super pretty-" Candy joined in.
"-rich-"
"-athletic-"
"-famous-"
"-and she's coming this way! Sit up straight!" Mabel whisper-shouted. The three girls quickly readjusted their hair and dresses.
"Hi Pacifica!" Mabel greeted as the shadow of Pacifica Northwest loomed over Dipper.
"Ugh, it's braces, man-girl, and four-eyes. I'm not here for you."
The girls blushed and looked down at their food.
"What's wrong with you?" Dipper turned to stare Pacifica in the eyes.
"Listen, I don't have to deal with your kind, okay?"
"My kind?"
"Shut up! I'm trying to speak. I just came over here to-"
"Nope," Dipper interrupted. "I don't care. Go away, Northwest."
"I just wanted to say-"
"Did you not hear me? I. Don't. Care."
"Oh my god, do you ever-"
Dipper stood up so that he could look down at Pacifica. Grenda and Candy gulped. Mabel seemed frozen. Dipper looked into the blue, shocked eyes of Pacifica. He didn't speak.
A second passed.
He stepped away from the table, taking his sandwich with him. "If you need me," he said, addressing his sister, "you know where to find me." He left, oblivious to the crowd of students watching as some nobody walked away from the Pacifica Northwest.
"Oh dude, that must suck." Soos the teaching assistant was probably Dipper's only friend. He couldn't really consider himself that close with Grenda or Candy, and Mabel was his sister. So he found himself in a classroom, in the company of the greatest teaching assistant of all time, talking about things friends would normally talk about.
"I know, right? And she dares to confront me while I'm eating?"
Soos took a bite of his sandwich. "Don't worry about it, dude. She's probably gonna, like, have to work for your company when you grow up."
"As if she needs to work for her money."
"Dude," Soos turned to face Dipper. "I'm serious, you know? From what I know, the popular kids never end up with a great future. They peak in high school, then they're brushed off to the side. But I know that a genius like you will grow up to invent the flying car or something."
"As always, Soos, you're probably right." Dipper smiled a little.
"My genius is both a blessing and a curse." The two chuckled and began eating in silence.
"Hey, crazy idea. You know how we have v-necks?"
Dipper raised an eyebrow. "Um, yeah?"
"What if we made w-necks?"
"I'm sorry what?"
Soos shrugged his shoulders. "Just a thought. A new fashion style. Might be cool, I don't know."
Mr. Trembley walked into the classroom. "Mr. Ramirez, are you busy? I need some help with printing."
"I am needed elsewhere." Soos stood up and followed Mr. Trembley out of the room, leaving Dipper alone with his thoughts.
The twins walked back home in silence. Dipper felt that what happened didn't need to be addressed. "Dipper?"
"I don't really feel like talking."
"We're supposed to go pick up some eggs." Dipper nodded and followed his sister down the road to Dusk 2 Dawn. They bought a dozen eggs and left. Not a word was spoken on the way back.
A van pulled up beside the two as they were walking. "Yo, Dipper!"
Dipper turned to face Wendy, a redhead who used to go to Gravity Falls High. He smiled lightly. "Hey Wendy, what's up?"
"It was your first day, that's what's up! How'd it go?"
"Nothing happened," Dipper said just as Mabel said, "Dipper talked back at Pacifica!"
"Mabel, shut up!"
"Woah, Northwest? I'm impressed."
"Y-you are?" Dipper felt his face flushing.
"Dude that's so awesome! I should've been there." A voice came from inside the van, "Wendy, let's go!"
Wendy turned back to look at Dipper. "Text me everything." The van drove off.
"Y-you are?" Mabel mocked. Dipper rolled his eyes and kept on walking. "I don't like her anymore. That was, like, three years ago!"
But Mabel wouldn't let it go, and continued to mock him for the rest of the journey home.
