A/N: So this is my second try at a fanfic. I'm gonna try to update weekly but it's ME so most likely updates will be inconsistent. Fair warning: in this story their is no character between Sasuke or Naruto that would run from the village because they wanna kill someone. However Naruto does become overly protective of Sasuke and would happily give up the Village if it meant saving Sasuke. A lot of things are changed and I just wanted to see where this would go. I'm saying this now so please don't complain if this isn't something you like. I will happily take criticism but dont just say "I don't like this. It's bad." Please explain why and/or if it's my writing style or my plot.

I know this isn't the best but I want ya to know I'm gonna try to really do this. It won't be perfect and there are still things I need to smooth out.

Disclaimer: Characters do not belong to me!

Warnings: Unbeta'd, Grammer and punctuation mistakes. Possible misspelling.

Now please continue and I hope that you enjoy what I wrote!

It was a known fact that nobody in the Uchiha Clan would speak or act wrongly to the Uchiha boy in front of his older brother. It was not because their father, the clan head, had asked for it but because nobody wanted to be at the end of the terror that was Itachi Uchiha. Even though the man was younger then most, many feared him due to his immense progress over a short time and his ruthless ways in the field.

Sasuke Uchiha alone, however, was an open target. As the year passed Itachi grew busier, having less time to spend with his brother. Which meant more beatings. However in the year of his 6th birthday Sasuke had found something he never thought he'd have. A friend. (The Uchiha children avoided him and the Konoha Civilians and Clan children feared him.)

The day had been normal. Sasuke had awoken to find his mother landing on his door screaming at him to wake up. All Sasuke wanted to do was turn around and go back to sleep knowing that tonight he would get another one of his beatings. It happened weekly and once the sun set it was like a riot all aiming to destroy the small boy. (He was always relieved when it ended but the closer it got to his birthday the more fear grew in him) Slowly getting up his heart felt heavier as he realized Itachi had left for a mission just last night. That meant that the beating would be even worse.

Making his way downstairs he made sure his Father wasn't there before entering the room. His mother always glanced up before giving him that look. He almost signed out loud but held it in knowing it would just anger the woman. He sat down quietly waiting to eat. Normally he was fed the minimum but on this day his mother took the slightest pity on him and gave him just a tad bit more knowing that tonight he would need all his energy. (It was only a few weeks till his birthday and the month leading up were always the worst)

Suddenly the door opened and Sasuke tensed knowing that it was his father standing at the doorway. The harsh glare at the back of his head was one he always remembered as it was directed at him if he was so much as in the same room as his father. His father moved around the table before sitting down a harsh thud as his bottle of sake fell on the table. Mother didn't say anything. Of course, she wouldn't on this day or any other because drinking meant beatings, and beatings were always meant for Sasuke.

Before they could say or do anything Sasuke stood. Bowing to his mother as he thanked her for the food and turned to escape from the tense air.

Going outside he quickly started on his journey of escaping the Uchiha district and entering the Civilian district of Konoha. He loved being there. There were always people smiling at him and waving as if they knew him. He loved smiling back and talking to the people selling things when they had a chance. They were always so kind to him. Reaching one stand with an old lady he was practically fond of he found a blond-haired boy across from staring longingly at the fruit there. Before anyone could stop Sasuke he walked up to the blond boy who immediately narrowed his eyes at him.

"Um, I'm Sasuke. Do you want fruit?" The boy seemed to stare at Sasuke like he'd lost his mind and Sasuke felt his nervousness grow. Seeing as the boy wasn't going to respond he slowly turned but before he could walk away the other boy grabbed his wrist.

"I'm Uzumaki Naruto! And yea I want the fruit." Then the boy gave Sasuke one of the most blinding smiles he had ever seen and it caused Sasuke to smile back. Nobody had ever smiled at him like that. The Uchiha were all mean to him while the people of Konoha all saw him as the Uchiha boy who was always by himself.

"So why don't you get some?" I asked trying to focus again on the conversation. "Ah, well I don't have enough money." Said Naruto rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.

Making a signal for Naruto to wait, Sasuke quickly crossed the street to where the old granny sat. She was staring at him with a startled look and Sasuke was confused.

Quickly picking out what he wanted he took out the money he had saved up. Itachi always gave him some when he was paid for his missions. Before he could leave again the woman grabbed his hand. "You stay away from that brat you hear me." She wasn't looking at him but at Naruto. And that's when he saw it, that look that had always been directed at him by the Uchiha's. Yanking his hand out of her grip he turned and ran, grabbing Naruto's hand to pull him along.

They had made it to the edge of a forest before Naruto spoke, "Why'd you do that!?" In his loud voice that caused birds to fly away.

Glaring at the ground Sasuke couldn't help but wonder if the boy hadn't seen the look that had been directed at him. "Why do you let them look at you like that?" The words were mumbled into the collar of his shirt but the other boy still heard him.

He looked up to find sad blue eyes watching him. So different from the bright ones that had smiled at him earlier. The blonde haired boy shrugged a small skinny shoulder and said the words Sasuke always thought to himself. "I think I did something wrong," He paused. "But I don't know what."

Sasuke stared at the boy with wide eyes before launching himself to grab at him. "I think I did something wrong too."

Their hug seemed to last forever.

It was the start of their friendship that changed everything. Nothing was the same after that.
