"Alright then!" Sikowitz waves the keys, which were in actuality just screwdrivers, to their rooms. "Boys, there's only three of you so you can all be in 208. Girls, two to a room, two in 302, two in 116." He tossed the keys to Tori. "I'll be in 420 if you need me!" He skipped off.
Trina immediately grabbed a key and Cat's hand. "I call Cat!"
"What?" Tori blinked at her.
"Well I'm not rooming with that-" she pointed at Jade. "And Tori, you are a chronic cuddler so..."
Tori put her hands on her hips defiantly. "Hey! That's not-"
"Hold on, did you say chronic cuddler?" Jade scoffed. "What does that even mean?"
"Well you're rooming with her tonight so you'll find out. Come on Cat!" Trina began dragging the red head away. Jade just rolled her eyes at the older Vega.
"Well, I guess that leaves us!" Tori smiled.
"As if this vacation couldn't get any worse." Jade harrumphed.
Tori pouted as she handed the key over to Jade. Maybe this was finally her chance to have some alone time with Jade and figure out how to finally become her friend. Although Tori didn't know why she kept trying, the girl was stubborn and seemed to harness a real hatred for all things Toi.
"Vega! Are you coming?" Jade called from halfway up the stairs.
"Huh?"
"I've been calling you for like five minutes now. Are you coming or what?" Jade paused. "Not that I care."
"Oh! Yes!" Tori snapped back into the present. "Let me just grab my bag." She hurried to pick up her duffle and follow Jade up the stairs to their room.
Jade barely stuck the screwdriver in the hole before it swung open.
"Well that's safe." Tori whimpers.
Jade doesn't reply as she walks in the door.
"It smells like my grandmother in here." Tori observes as she stepped inside.
"The dead one or the live one?" Jade asked.
"Jade!"
"What? That was a legitimate question. It smells like someone died in here."
The girls placed their bags down and looked around the room.
Everything around them was a gross dark yellow color that reminded Tori of the cheese she had discovered at the bottom of one of their fridge drawers one day.
And honestly, Jade has been right when she pointed out the rotting smell, the room didn't smell much better than that cheese had.
Nevertheless, Tori and Jade both sucked it up and got ready for bed.
When she was ready, Tori stood at the foot of the bed, looking expectantly at Jade.
"What are you waiting for, Vega?" Jade looked her up and down.
"I- do you have a preference for sides or-" Tori began.
"Doesn't matter." Jade walked to the right side of the bed and plopped down, quickly throwing the covers over herself and sinking into the mattress.
Tori followed suit, more carefully. Even lying somewhat towards the inside of the bed, Tori and Jade had about four feet between them.
"This must be an Alaska King Bed." Tori chuckled to herself.
"What?" Jade murmured, already sounding half asleep.
"An Alaska king bed!" Tori explained. "You know, cause a California king bed is really big, but this bed is bigger, and Alaska is a bigger state than California, so this bed is-"
"Jesus Christ, Tori." Jade breathed.
"What?"
"You talk too much."
"Sorry." Tori pouted.
Tori tried to fall asleep, or at least close her eyes, but the sounds of bomb sirens blaring and people screaming outside their window rattled Tori to the core.
"Hey Jade?" She tried.
No response.
"Jade?"
No response.
"Are you-" The girl propped herself up on her elbows and looked at the sleeping girl beside her. "How are you asleep?" She scream-whispered.
Tori rearranged her pillows and laid back down with a loud, exaggerated sigh.
More bombs rained down outside, sounding closer this time. Tori resigned herself to the fact that she would not be sleeping tonight.
Just when she thought things couldn't be worse, the window of their room was suddenly thrown open and a dirty looking man jumped through.
Tori screamed bloody murder as the man made a break for the inside door, but just as he was about to pass through two guards also came through the window and jumped on the man, restraining him and dragging him back out through the window.
Tori kept screaming until they had been gone for at least five minutes.
She was breathing heavily as some tears streaked down her cheeks. "Jade are you okay?" She turned to Jade and- "how are you still asleep?"
Nevertheless, Jade looked completely at peace as she lie in the old Yerbian bed. In fact, the way she was sleeping, perfectly still, her arms crossed over her stomach, her pale features completely at rest, Jade looked like a corpse.
It was freaking Tori out.
So she did the only thing she could to remedy the situation. She woke her up.
"Jade!" Tori shook the girl hard. "Jade wake up!"
Before she knew what was happening, Tori was flipped on her back and off the bed, pinned to the ground by none other than Jade West.
"What the hell do you think you're doing Vega?" Jade hissed as her hands pinned Tori's own above her head.
Tori tried to ignore the sudden, very warm, feelings that were overtaking her body at the sight of Jade West practically straddling her. "I was scared." She replied in an almost-whisper.
"Scared of what?"
"What do you mean, scared of what?" Tori finally regained her composure. "Look around us! We're in the middle of a war zone and a criminal just barged in through our window! And I think I saw a lizard in the bathroom earlier! And-"
Jade rolled her eyes as she finally released her grip on Tori's wrists. "You're such a wimp." She stood and got back into bed, not bothering to help Tori.
Tori scoffed at the girl. "Well I'm sorry not all of us can sleep through literal bomb sirens! We are not all depraved freaks like you!"
"Well next time you're scared, don't wake me up." Jade growled. "You're lucky I didn't have my scissors on me, or you might be missing a lung right now."
Tori whimpered at the thought. She finally got to her feet and climbed over Jade to return to her side of the bed. Jade grumbled as Tori maneuvered over her.
"You couldn't have just walked around?" She complained.
"You couldn't have just not thrown me to the ground?" Tori shot back.
"You should know it's never a good idea to wake a sleeping dragon."
"You read Harry Potter?" Tori perked up.
"What?" Jade squinted at her.
"Never wake a sleeping dragon, Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus. That's the Hogwarts motto. Although technically it's don't tickle a sleeping dragon."
Jade sighed. "Tori, in case no one else in your life tells you this enough, you're a huge nerd."
"It was a legitimate question! Do you like Harry Potter?"
"It's a series that involves witches, disgusting jelly bean flavors, and a curse that can instantly kill people, what do you think?"
"I'll take that as a yes. Who's your favorite character?" Tori piped up.
Jade sighed as she rearranged her pillows and closed her eyes. "Bellatrix."
"Bellatrix? You're favorite character can't be Bellatrix!"
"Why not."
"She's pure evil!"
"Exactly. She's also hot, like me." Jade retorted.
"Ok, if I'm a nerd, you're a psychopath." Tori scoffed.
"Funny, that's what my therapist said last week." Jade opened one eye to glare at Tori.
"You need like ten therapists." Tori mumbles.
"What was that?"
"Nothing." Tori quickly backtracked.
Jade harrumphed as she turned her back to Tori.
"Jade?"
"Oh my god Vega." Jade shot up so she was sitting upright. "What do I have to do to shut you up?"
Tori blinked at her. "I-"
Jade continued. "What? You need a bedtime story or something?"
Tori continued to stare at her. "I-"
"You want a nightlight, a teddy bear, what?"
"Maybe if you could-" Tori began.
"If I could what?"
"Never mind, I can't ask you." Tori bit nervously at her nails.
"Listen Tori. You wake me up again tonight, I have a murder charge on my hands, and you know what, I don't really feel like going to prison in this life. So, I'm going to avoid that by getting you to sleep. I'm asking you nicely, for now, how do I do that, get you to fall asleep, other than smashing this lamp on the side of your head?" Jade seethed.
Tori swallowed as she looked into Jade's now piercing eyes. "I guess I- I like-" she swallowed.
"Spit it out already, Vega, I'm trying to get some shut eye."
"I like to be held!" Tori finally blurted out.
Jade's eyebrows scrunched together as she looked at Tori, whose eyes were now shut tight in anticipation of Jade's reaction to her confession.
Jade finally rolled her eyes and sighed as she began to scoot closer to Tori.
Tori began to panic slightly as Jade inched closer. "What- What are you doing?"
"I'm gonna hold you, so lay down and shut up now." Jade answered smoothly.
"You don't have to-"
"Vega. I'm exhausted. It was a 13 hour flight and a two hour bus ride here and I can't sleep on any form of transportation. I am going to sleep tonight. Which means you also have to sleep tonight because apparently you can't keep quiet when you're awake. So lay down, and turn around." Jade pushed Tori's shoulders towards the bed forcefully, and began turning her to face the wall.
"Okay." Tori complied rather easily and turned so she was on her side facing away from Jade.
"Move your hair so it doesn't suffocate me." Jade commanded.
Tori twisted her hair and tucked it under her own neck so it was out of Jade's way.
Jade was finally satisfied and laid down next to Tori, scooting up so the front of her body was completely melded to Tori's back. Then she lazily tossed an arm around Tori's waist and pulled her even closer.
"This okay?" Jade ventured.
She could feel Tori swallow hard. "Yeah, perfect."
"It goes without saying, Vega, that this stays between the two of us." Jade explained as she finally closed her eyes.
"Right. Got it." Tori sighed, settling down into her pillow.
————————
The next morning, before Jade even opened her eyes, she felt a light pressure on her chest. She cracked one eye open only to behold a sight she never would have imagined to see in a million years.
Tori Vega was sprawled across her, her head on Jade's chest, her arm snaked around her waist, and her leg hooked around Jade's own.
What was really surprising for Jade however was how comfortable she was in this position. She felt warm and secure- and that freaked Jade out. Tori Vega was not a person that was supposed to make her feel warm and secure. She would have to return to that thought later, and most likely mention it to her therapist.
For now, Jade ventured a glance over to the clock on the bedside table, and immediately her eyes widened. "Shit! Vega wake up!" She shook the girl hard, but this only caused Tori to whimper and hold Jade tighter. "Vega! I swear to god! Wake up!" She flicked at her nose and this caused Tori to startle awake.
"Ow! What?" Tori whined, her position on top of Jade not seeming to bother her.
"We're half an hour late for rehearsal!" Jade shot back.
"What? There's no way it's-" Tori looked at the clock. "It's 10:30!" She scrambled off of Jade and threw the covers off them to jump out of bed. "We slept for 14 hours?"
"Apparently!" Jade followed her lead and quickly ran to her bag to grab a change of clothes.
It took them five minutes to manage to look somewhat put together and begin running for the conference room where rehearsals would be held.
When Jade and Tori arrived, everyone else was sitting in a circle on the floor, with Sikowitz giving them directions on the performance.
"Well, Jade an Tori, how nice of you to join us." Sikowitz commented.
"Sorry, we overslept." Tori explained.
"Over -slept?" Beck raised an eyebrow at them.
"You guys were able to sleep?" Trina looked at them incredulously.
Jade and Tori exchanged silent, knowing glances with one another.
"The bed was soft." Tori stammered our. "The blankets were nice and warm."
Everyone in the circle stared at them incredulously for a moment before shrugging them off and returning their attention to Sikowitz.
—————
Their second night in their room Jade didn't even bother asking before she pressed herself against Tori's back. And she didn't even care that Tori's hair was in her face. She smelled like vanilla sugar cookies, and Jade did not mind it at all.
Tori settled in her arms and smiled. "Thanks, Jade."
Jade simply grunted and closed her eyes, almost immediately drifting off to sleep with Tori held securely in her arms. She dreamed of owning a bakery in Paris. And Tori Vega, much to Jade's surprise and confusion, made more than one guest appearance in her dreams.
———-—
On their third night, as Jade moved to once again hold Tori, Tori stopped her.
Jade scrunched her eyebrows in confusion. "What? Don't need me tonight?" Jade tried to ignore the fact that she sounded a bit disappointed.
"No, I just- can I hold you tonight?" Tori bit at her bottom lip.
Jade blinked in surprise, registering in her mind what Tori was asking, then slowly nodded her head. "Sure."
Jade turned to lay on her side, facing away from Tori.
Tori immediately was at her back, her body perfectly fitting against Jade's. She threw one arm around Jade's waist to secure their position, and Jade felt her nuzzle into her neck, Tori's warm breath sending a light shiver down Jade's spine.
"You okay?" Tori murmured.
"Fine." Jade lied. She felt more than fine. She felt warm and she felt safe and she felt needed. She felt more than she ever thought she could with just this simple action of being held in Tori's arms.
"You smell good." Tori murmured softly against her neck, the vibration of her voice sending a pleasant ripple through Jade's body.
Jade didn't respond. She was too afraid of what would come out of her mouth if she even dared to open it.
——————
The worst part about spending the night in Yerbian prison, Tori thought privately, was that Jade wasn't there to hold her. And that she couldn't hold Jade.
She had grown accustomed to their nighttime routine.
Oh let's face it. Tori had become addicted.
For a girl that comes off so hard, she really felt so soft in Tori's arms. And sometimes, although she would never tell Jade this at risk of being stabbed, Tori would try and stay awake just a bit longer than Jade, so she could hear the adorable noises she made when she was asleep. Or so she could tighten her grip and hold Jade impossibly close to her, feeding off her warmth and melting into her embrace.
But now, she just felt cold and empty, laying in the hard bed of her prison cell.
And meanwhile, just a short van ride away, Jade West lay awake in bed, staring up at the ceiling and wondering how in the hell she had grown attached to the way Vega held her close at night.
——————
A week had passed and finally Tori was back in her room at home in LA.
After a long, hot shower in which Tori scrubbed every inch of her body twice, she put on a set of her softest pajamas and laid in her bed to sleep off her jet lag.
But of course she couldn't sleep.
Even after being awake for nearly 24 hours, Tori could not even think of sleep, because her bed was missing one vital ingredient. A certain dark haired, world hating ingredient of the female variety.
Tori sighed and tossed and turned, trying to use her pillow as a substitute for the girl she wanted. It was no use. Sleep had become absolutely pointless to hope for without the presence of Jade.
Funny how a girl who used to keep her awake, making Tori wonder about her own self worth, is now the only way she can fall asleep.
Her ringtone blaring from her nightstand jostled Tori from her thoughts. She scrambled to answer her phone, not bothering to look at the caller ID.
"Hello?" She ventured.
"I'm outside." A familiar voice grumbled from the other side of the line.
"Outside where?" Tori didn't bother asking who was calling.
"Outside of your house, idiot. Where else? Come open your front door."
The phone went dead as Tori blinked at it. She didn't give herself time to think before nearly sprinting down to open her front door.
As the door swung open, she saw Jade standing in her pajamas with a light black cardigan thrown over them.
"Hi!" Tori eagerly greeted her.
"I hate you." Jade shot back.
"Really? You came all this way just to say that?" Tori sighed.
"Yes." Jade let herself in, walking through the door and past Tori. "Because now I can't sleep without you."
Tori's mouth was on the floor as she simply stared at Jade, trying to absorb her words.
Jade rolled her eyes. "Don't look at me like I'm crazy, I know you couldn't sleep tonight either."
Tori picked her jaw up off the floor, ready to engage in Jade's verbal battle. "And how would you know that?"
"Because you have been up for 27 hours, 3 of which have been spent at home, with a perfectly inviting bed in it, and yet you're not asleep."
Tori pursed her lips. Jade did have a point there. "Well-"
"Look, Vega. Let's just talk about this after I get a good ten hours of sleep in, alright?" She grabbed Tori's wrist and began dragging her up to her bedroom.
Tori didn't complain as Jade nearly threw her onto her own bed, climbed in behind her, and covered them both in blankets. She also didn't complain when Jade held her especially close that night. And she definitely didn't complain when they again slept for a solid 14 hours, feeling completely at ease in each other's arms.
