Joy
That's what Midoriya feels every time he decides to look up his current Hero Status, pure joy. Who can blame him? Ever since he graduated from UA, he's been working tirelessly day in and day out to truly be a successor to All Might by becoming the No.1 ranked hero. He hasn't reached it yet, but he can feel it coming! Since his debut, he's been soaring through the ranking system at tremendous speed, already breaking into the top ten ranking heroes at age eighteen after starting his own agency. It was a perfect accomplishment to achieve a few weeks before his birthday; he called his mom that night crying tears of joy.
Since then it's been a steady climb through the best of the best; All Might warned him how much of a battle it would be to rise up in rank once he entered the higher ranks, especially the top ten. Not only would he be physically competing with other heroes that have years more experience and connections than him, but he'll have to gather his own following to boost his approval rate against all the heroes who already have a diehard fanbase. Despite the odds, he'd plus ultra'd his way into 4th place, and if All Might's statistics indicated anything, it's that his recent hero activity combined with his current approval rating were just enough to take the No.3 hero's spot at the next Hero Ranking Event.
"It's all coming together," Midoriya told himself just as he received a phone call.
A few years ago, during his younger years, he got pulled into a multi-universal/dimensional event(he never got a chance to clarify), where he met and fought alongside many heroes he knew from old manga his dad owned; turns out stories in one world are an actual reality for another. It was an unforgettable adventure to say the least, one only he and a select few he knew remembers, due to a side effect from separating his world from all the other worlds. It was a group decision among the few that knew of the event to not tell the public about it, half the reason being because they didn't know how the public would react to such a discovery, and the other half was how troublesome it'll be to convince people of such a batshit idea.
It's been years since he saw any of the other heroes he fought alongside like Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Ichigo, Gon, Jotaro, and Asta, but he knows they're doing well. The director of Jump Force, the organization that helped save him and his world during the whole multi-world event, still uses the technology from the organization to travel between each world and see how everyone is doing.
It was there that The Director got an idea to turn the real events of Jump Force into a game! He actually tried this idea in his world first, but apparently it ended up as a failure, so he was revamping the project in this world since it was the closest one to his own where advertising old shounen manga would actually sell. The marketing this time around is 'Current Day Legends meeting the Ancestors of Herodom', it was an excuse to use his, Bakugo's, Todoroki's, and especially All Might's (who was still the most popular hero despite being retired for years now) popularity to sell the game about classic but outdated characters. The game seemed to be doing a lot better this time around, with only a month left before release the game was a high trending topic across social media. Looking to harvest this grand interest, The Director decided to host a live event in two weeks to promote the game.
That's what the phone call was for.
He was offered a chance to go to the event as a star guest, since he was a featured character in the game, and this came at a good time as he had just finished his physical recovery from his missions, so his schedule was open. With no reason to decline, he accepted the offer.
So you see, that's where the trouble began-
That phone call-
That damned phone call!
TWO WEEKS LATER!
Midoriya, along with Bakugo, Todoroki, and All Might, were all in the green room. All Might was signing autographs for all the older staff members who had looked up to him since they were young, regardless of him being retired now. Todoroki and Bakugo were constantly annoying one another; well, more like Todoroki would try to be friendly to Bakugo but ended up pissing him off instead (their relationship hadn't changed that much since their high school days). Finally, Midoriya was just mentally preparing himself for the performance he was going to have to put on. He'd learned to deal with most of his nervousness with some practice over the years, but his nerves were racking for this event. It was said this event would be one of the biggest events of the year, yet they barely got any information on what they should do once they got on stage.
When The Director entered he made it quick, "Ok we're on in 5, in positions people!" Seeing this as his chance, Midoriya spoke up.
"Uhh excuse me, what are we supposed to do?" Bakugo was the first to respond
"Eh!? How the fuck did you come in here not knowing what to do!?"
"I didn't get anything!" Midoriya replied defensively.
"You must've missed the email we received on it. I keep telling you to get that thing fixed, you almost missed Momo and I's wedding invitation," added Todoroki.
The Director cut in, "It's fine, not like it's that complicated anyways. Long story short, you are going to do an old western standoff with different characters in the game for a few of the series; don't worry, they're just other heroes in costumes so don't be afraid to be a bit physical for the spectacle. Think of it like a wrestling contest, you pop in all flashy, trashtalk, say some one-liners, give some fan-service, then you're done."
"That sounds simple," Midoriya mumbled to himself. Feeling a hand land on his shoulder, he looked to see his former mentor.
"Trust me, I've done hundreds of these things back in the day, they're actually quite fun to do. Just keep your nerves, try not to have your voice crack and you're good!" All Might advised.
Feeling confident Midoriya nodded, he had this in the bag!
"You caught up? Good!" stated The Director, "We have a few smaller series to do first before the main one so not all of you will have to talk, just go off the top of your head they're only meant to build up hype. Our main event is the showdown against Dragon Ball Z! The fan voted pairings are All Might vs Goku, the debated best hero ever vs Shounen's most influential main character ever. Ground Zero vs Vegeta, people like a good ol prideful match. Deku vs Piccolo, done only for the meme of you both being green. And to finish, Freezerburn vs Trunks, because you both have father issues."
…
"I'm kidding, it's because you both have the most fangirls! Those are the ones you should be thinking about the most. Now let's go, it's time!"
The event went pretty smoothly as planned, All Might was a natural at enchanting the audience, people loved Bakugo's aggressive (sometimes physical) banter with other hot headed characters which would sometimes lead to one or multiple people being held back to add to the drama, and the ladies had more of their fill of fun whenever Todoroki was center stage. Midoriya was a bit slow finding his own niche between all his co-stars at first, but after a few turns and discrete words of advice from all of them he found his own style. Soon he was becoming the fan-favorite of the bunch, which aggravated Bakugo due to the ash blonde's competitive nature.
After 2 hours it was time for the main event.
To really build up tension, they were all directed to do some kind of entrance on stage as if they were actually landing on the battlefield and meeting their opponent for the first time.
All Might almost brought the whole house down by doing his iconic 'I am here!' entrance, even though there was obviously a bunch of special effects added in because of his frail body, but it was the meaning behind it that everyone cared about.
Bakugo's own was impressive as well, with his use of explosions to make his entrance extra flashy.
Now it was his turn, the crowd's current favorite. He needed to make it good to keep up with the first two entrances but there was a problem, he was so focused finding his social space on stage that he forgot to think of something to do for the main event.
'They did say I can wing it,' thought Midoriya as he waited for his turn to come on stage, he needed to think quickly as it was only a matter of time. He didn't know too much about Piccolo, they only barely passed by each other during the actual Jump Force incident.
Then he got an idea.
It was blurry but he remembered something Goku told him about Piccolo, he was going to base his entrance off that.
Then his name was called.
With a high leap he did a backflip in the air along with a flurry of air strikes in every direction to show off his battle prowess before landing perfectly. Turning toward the stage he saw his supposed 'opponent' in this, some guy in a surprisingly accurate Piccolo costume, already on stage. Like the real thing he looked moody and distanced, giving a cold stare as soon as he entered. He was playing his role perfectly.
A perfect opponent for this hero, the confidence in Midoriya was boiling at this point, he felt like he could make this event become monumental!
So he said the line.
"A Villain! I have to protect everyone!"
…..
It was haunting how quickly the crowd went silent.
The Director's mouth dropped open, one of the camera men leaned to the side to look at Midoriya so he could confirm what just happened with his own eyes, All Might looked more devastated then when he found out Shigaraki was related to Nana, even Todoroki covered his mouth with wide open eyes, and Bakugo had a face that told he was torn between surprised and delighted at the turn of events.
This was probably the worst event he could've invited his mom to.
At first Midoriya was confused, thinking something happened out of his sight that drew their action, but when the person in the Piccolo costume broke character to look at him in disgust, he realized one thing.
He fucked up.
Two Hours Later
BREAKING NEWS: Pro Hero Deku Made Insensitive Comments At Major Japanese Event!
NEWS REPORT: Incident At Japan Event Goes Viral!
ALERT - Current Events: Deku Ruined An Event's Grand Finale!
Japan's Tonight Show: Deku is Trending in Japan, Find Out Why!
"That's enough media for today," said the emotionally destroyed boy as he lay curled up in his bed.
He couldn't believe he screwed up that badly in front of everyone like that. He didn't even meant it like that, all he remembered being told by Goku was how Piccolo came to be born and how he tried to murder a bunch of people, what was he supposed to think! The only reason he didn't pack his bags and fly straight home was because his co-stars did their best not to make him feel worse about what just happened.
Then there was a knock on the door and he went to open it.
As soon as he did he was meant with the bellowing laughter of Bakugo who was standing in his doorway. It was one of the few times Midoriya had ever seen Bakugo look so happy in his life, the ash blond looked like he might keel over from how hard he was laughing.
"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
This continued for the next 5 minutes before Midoriya realized he wasn't going to be saying anything anytime soon, deciding to slam the door in his face. He thought that might've pissed Bakugo off enough to make his laughter stop but he continued hearing his now haunting laugh for another 7 minutes before hearing it get quieter, seemingly because the explosive hero walked off while still laughing at the top of his lungs.
When peace finally returned to the room, it was quickly killed by his phone ringing. Sighing, he picked it up.
"Deku, oh my god are you ok?"
It was Ochako, Midoriya put her in charge of the agency while he was away.
"Yeah I'm fine…" Midoriya replied in a melancholic tone.
"That doesn't sound fine, listen I just saw the event on Tv and…...uh…"
"Yeah…"
"That was…..not good."
"...Yeah."
"Like really really not good, makes me a bit less jealous that I didn't come with."
"Oh god I was terrible!"
"What? No- sorry, sorry, don't mind me!"
"You're fine, I don't blame you! That was the worst thing ever!"
"That's a bit of an exaggeration Deku!"
"I'm trending on literally every form of Japanese social media."
"...Oh that is bad."
"..."
"I mean! You know how the media is these days, they blow up any tiny event as if it's the end of the world when by next week nothing about that event will matter."
"I-"
His sentence was interrupted by a call.
"One second Ochako, got another call coming," he told her before answering the mystery call, "Hello?"
"MWHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
A familiar laughter rang through the phone, at this point Bakugo must've not stopped laughing since he left, on his end of things it sounded like he was wheezing from lack of oxygen; Izuku took that wasted time to wonder why he's still friends with the howling man.
Hanging up the phone he returned to his conversation with Uraraka.
"I'm back."
"Who was it?"
"...I don't wanna talk about it."
"Oh…..ok."
"You were talking about the media?"
"Right right! Don't let it get to you, you had a bad day, trust me this happens to heroes all the time! Just do you regular business and keep your head down to not cause any more unnecessary trouble. I bet in a week or two this whole thing will blow over!"
Three Weeks Later!
NEW REPORT: Is Deku Racist!?
Calmly Deku got out his phone and sent a single text message to Uraraka.
Deku: You were wrong!
Uraraka: I'm so sorry ;-;
Deku: WRONG!
Things didn't cool down after the incident, they only heated up.
First of all, this stopped being a local to Japan incident, now this was trending worldwide! Literally everyone was talking about it because The Director thought it would be a great idea to add his line to the actual game, creating a resurgence of the topic except on a world-scale. Secondly, now all the news talk had escalated things from insensitive comments to him being a full on racist against people with mutant-type quirks! Thirdly, it was just his luck that the guy under the Piccolo costume was a mutant-type quirk user. Finally, his silence was being taken as a confession of him being a racist.
Current Approval Ratings: 469
With his ratings taking a hard hit he had to do something, so he set up a quick press conference to explain himself.
With a story this spicy it didn't take much effort to get one going.
"You sure about this?" Ochako asked him by the side of the podium.
Midoriya nodded to her, "Better clear it up now before it gets out of hand."
Then the conference began.
Deku: Thank you all for com-
Reporter: Deku, we want to know why do you hate Piccolo's entire race of people?
Deku: Please wait till I'm done before I answer questions, it'll make things much-... Wait what!? I don't hate Piccolo's entire race!
Reporter: But you called them villains?
Deku: I called Piccolo a villain, which I sorely apologize for.
Reporter: What even gave you the idea to call him a villain right then and there!?
Deku: I just honestly thought it would be fitting to the situation. You saw how the guy looked, he almost perfectly fit the description of what a villain would look like."
Reporter:...
…..
Uraraka looked mortified.
Deku: Wait-

Despair~
That was all Midoriya felt whenever he looked at his ratings, complete and utter despair.
It all went wrong so fast and so easily.
Within a single month everything he worked hard toward since graduation was going to be regressed back to oblivion over a single slip of a tongue.
He didn't know if anything could make him feel worse right now.
Riiiiiing!
Click!
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!"
"Did you really call me just so you can start laughing again!?"
Surprisingly it was that line that stopped the never ending laughter of the blonde for a moment.
"Start?" Bakugo repeated, "Who said I ever stopped!? I've been laughing for three weeks straight! Check the news!" he exclaimed.
A quick google search gave the green haired boy all he needed to know, he really did laugh for the entire 3 weeks, even as he did his hero duties. It was so jarring that they thought maybe he finally snapped mentally or got possessed by some demon spirit, some theorized both!
"Son of a bitch," were the words Midoriya mumbled under his breath at this discovery, not being in the mood to hear anymore he was just about to hang up before the unexpected happened.
"Hold on, I actually got something to talk to you about," the ash blonde said between his chuckles, he must've had an instinct that Midoriya wanted to hang up on him, "So what's new nerd?" Bakugo asked when he finally stopped laughing.
"Oh you know… the thing that's been everywhere!"
The blonde took a moment to snicker, "Yeah I saw, looks like you fucked up big time publicity-wise and you know how much that affects your hero ranking."
"Gee thanks, I needed to be reminded of that."
"It looks like you're going to drop pretty hard in the rankings because of your approval ratings, that's why I'm going to help you fix that."
"Look I don't- wait what!?"
"What?"
"You said you were going to help me!?"
"Yeah?"
"T-that's great! Thank you but it's just surprising, I thought you always wanted to surpass me in the rankings?"
"I do, but I don't want a win just handed to me. I'm already guaranteed to surpass Icy Hot bastard next ranking because of his wedding."
"The fangirls really didn't like the fact that he's getting married."
"Focus nerd! Anyways, I don't want to beat you through some bullshit reason as well, that'll make the victory worthless to me, so I'mma call just the person you need."
"Who?"
"You remember how almost half a damn year ago I got into big trouble at that fundraiser."
"You mean when you got mad I called you Kacchan on camera? Yeah I remember, you threw a punch at me but ended up accidentally punching an innocent baby in the face."
"My ratings dropped like never before and I couldn't recover by myself so I called someone I knew to help me out. It worked great considering how I managed to rank right behind that half and half fucker despite the controversy, she'll definitely be able to get your ass out of this shitty situation."
"You mean like a PR manager? I don't know, I kinda already have someone like that at the agency and I don't wanna-."
"LISTEN HERE DEKU, YOU BROKE INTO THE TOP 10 BEFORE ME, YOU'RE NOT GOING DOWN LIKE THIS UNTIL AFTER I BEAT YOU PROPERLY! I'VE SEEN WHAT YOUR PR TEAM PUT OUT, THEY AIN'T GONNA HELP YOU THEY'RE TRASH! JUST ACCEPT THE FUCKING HELP ALREADY!"
Why does he always have to yell?
"O-ok, I'll give her a shot. It wouldn't hurt now that things have gotten this bad."
"Good, because I already sent her your way so you would've had a very awkward conversation if you declined. She'll be there shortly."
"A-already! How did you get someone so fast."
"I arranged all of this like a week ago whens I saw how downhill you were going, I had a instinct you were going to fuck it up more and the person I called needed to clear her schedule."
"Why are you just telling me this now then?"
"Because I was too busy laughing my ass off! HAHAHAHAHA see ya!"
"Wait before you go, who is this girl that's supposed to help me?"
"You should know her, you've met before."
Click….
The phone call ended.
Despite the annoyance of Bakugo's constant laughter and taunts, he should probably thank him later for doing this for him, despite it being for his own prideful reasons. If this woman can help make Bakugo's controversy go away as quickly as it does then she must be good at her job, the only question was who was it. The ash blonde said he'd met her before, but no one with those kinds of PR skills came to mind.
"Who can it be?"
When the doorbell rang he knew he would get his answer soon.
Opening the door, he met the woman who was supposed to save his career.
He expected to see some kind of lavishly-dressed woman who wore too much makeup and probably went to dog shows every other weekend.
Instead he came face to face with an enchantress.
The first thing he saw was her beautiful blonde hair and dark brown eyes. From her plump glossy lips she let out a lively greeting, "Oh, hey fam!"
