Needless to say, it was a good night. I could finally call myself a man. Honestly, out of all the female characters I created, I'd say that Barbaria was my favorite. And last night, it was sold.
When dawn broke, Barbaria and I checked out of the inn. We went by the trade shop and returned the golden dragon claw to Lucan. I could have sworn that when I left, Camilla gave me a flirtatious wink. Barbaria and I left Riverwood and went on the road.
"So where to?" Barbaria asked.
"We got to meet with the Jarl of Whiterun." I said. "Riverwood is in desperate need of more guards because of the dragons."
"All right then." Barbaria said.
The road lead us around the mountain until I caught sight of Pinewood Farms. We continued our trek through the fields when our eyes caught something.
A massive figure was thrashing around in the middle of a farm field. It was probably fifteen feet tall. There were normal-sized people surrounding it with weapons gripped tightly in their hands. It was then that I recognized the situation.
"The Companions." I said.
"I don't know what that means," Barbaria said raising her fists, "But there's a giant there, and I want a piece of it."
Barbaria screamed as she made a mad dash to the giant. When she was close enough, she raised her fists into a ball and slammed it down on its foot. The giant took a step back in surprise. The Companions took a step back and watched as Barbaria challenged the giant again. I approached the Companion that I recognized as Aela the Huntress.
"Your ally is either very brave or very foolish." Aela said.
"Either way, so am I." I knew that with Barbaria, we could handle this giant. The beast tried to swing its club at Barbaria, but she jumped out of the way. I used the opportunity to run behind the giant and raise my shield to the back of its leg. "Barbaria, push!"
Barbaria knew what I meant. The giant swung again, but the Savage Queen dodged again and countered by jumping towards its face. She used her fist to punch it in its nose. The giant roared in pain as it took a step back. That was my cue. As soon as the giant made contact, I raised my shield further making it trip over me. As soon as its back hit the ground, I climbed on top of it, raised my sword, and struck it square in its heart. The giant fell dead as I jumped off its corpse and regrouped with Barbaria and the Companions.
"Well, I admit, that was impressive." Aela said. "Who are you two?"
"I am Draco Morningscar."
"Call me Barbaria the Savage Queen."
"Well, Draco and Barbaria, on behalf of the Companions, we thank you for your assistance. If you've got the fortitude, we'd be honored to have you join us."
"Perhaps… if I knew who the Companions are?" Barbaria said.
"The Companions are a guild of warriors based in Whiterun." I explained. "They go around Skyrim brawling against undesireables and fighting off wild creatures.
"Sounds like my kind of club." Barbaria said.
She's not wrong. When I played her, I had her join the Companions. However, I couldn't decide whether or not to keep her as a werewolf, which ironically lead me to keep her as one. I also knew I shouldn't mention the werewolf stuff when I talked about the Companions, or else Aela might kill me for knowing too much.
"We'll be in Jorrvaskr if you decide to join." Aela said as she began to walk off with her friends. "Welcome to Whiterun."
As they walked away, I turned to Barbaria. "Do you want to join?"
"Of course, I do." Barbaria said. "That sounds like a good place for a challenge. …But I do suppose we should get back to seeing the Jarl."
"Good call." I assured. I still wasn't sure whether or not to join, but that sounded like something I'll consider.
After I told the guards to let us in to speak to the Jarl about the dragons, they opened the doors for us. Barbaria and I traveled down the market hearing all the districts. We heard the Battleborn soldiers tell Adrianne Avenicci to hurry on their orders. We passed through Breezehome. All the markets were booming with business when we passed by. We traveled through The Wind District, and when we reached the Cloud District, we would see Dragonsreach overhead. Barbaria couldn't help but whistle in impressed tone.
"That's some castle."
"I guess." I said. "Legends says that a man named Olaf One-Eye trapped a dragon with a sophisticated trap at the porch."
"Sounds high maintenance." Barbaria said.
We entered the palace and proceeded through the front hallway. As in the game, we were stopped by the housecarl, Irileth.
"Halt!" she commanded drawing her sword. "State your business."
"Excuse me?" Barbaria asked. "Did you just tell me what to do?"
"Calm down, Barbaria." I said. "Let's not get into this."
"Irileth." A familiar voice called from the throne. Jarl Balgruuf the Greater watched us and gestured his hand in a "come hither" motion. The dark elf lowered her weapon and let us pass. We approached the Jarl and greeted him.
"Jarl Balgruuf, I presume." I said.
"Indeed." He responded. "What brings you two here?"
"Alvor sent us." I responded. "Riverwood needs more guards. Dragons are coming back."
"You expect us to…" Hrongar started to say.
"No, brother." Balgruuf interrupted. "Tell me, sir, are you sure the dragons have returned?"
"Positive." I insisted.
"Tell me everything."
I went on and told him of the events that happened in Helgen. I was careful not to mention my personal circumstances, although I doubt he would understand that where I'm from, he's a video game character. When I was done, he stroked his beard and pondered for a second.
"Should have guessed that Ulfric would be involved somehow. But if the dragons have returned, then we need to double our defenses. Irileth, send some of our troops to Riverwood."
"Of course, my Jarl." Irileth said.
"As for the two of you," Balgruuf said returning his attention at me and Barbaria, "You seem to be capable warriors."
"Oh, we're capable of a million things." Barbaria boasted.
"Just so happens, I happen to know someone who could use your talents." I knew where this was going. Balgruuf lead me and Barbaria to the alchemy lab where we met up with Farengar, the court wizard.
"Ah, my Jarl." Farengar said. "What can I do for you?"
"You know your research into dragons?" Balgruuf said. "Well, I happen to know that these two could help."
"What's the job?" Barbaria asked. "Do we get to hit things?"
"Most likely." Farengar said. "You see, there is a dragonstone hidden in a nearby dungeon and I need it for my research. With it, we could better understand the dragons and perhaps how they came back."
"A dungeon, you say?" I asked. Of course, I knew where he was talking about. "And where might that be?"
"At the top of the mountain in Bleak Falls Barrow." I feigned my surprise while Barbaria's was genuine. We exchanged looks and chuckled for a bit while Farengar stared. "What's so funny?"
"Actually…" I reached into my bag and grabbed the dragonstone we got from Bleak Falls Barrow. I gave it to Farengar. "We've already been there."
"By the Eight!" Farengar exclaimed. "A couple of overachievers, you are."
"No kidding." Barbaria said. She smiled in my direction and I smiled back. "So where's the reward?"
"You'll have to speak to the Jarl about that."
We went up to the Jarl's warroom and awaited for him. Barbaria looked at the table with flags around it and stared.
"This about the war?" Barbaria asked.
"Pretty much." I answered. "The Imperials and the Stormcloaks have Skyrim split pretty evenly in the middle."
"Hey, you seem to know stuff." Barbaria asked. "Would you mind explaining the specifics of the war to me? I'm trying to understand it."
"Simply put," I said, "There used to be nine gods. But the Empire decided that one of them doesn't count since he used to be a human. They've banned the worship of Talos ever since. Although, the Stormcloaks didn't like that. They believe that Talos has the right to be worshipped. The two factions have been debating over it until Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak and the High King decided to settle it with a duel. During the duel, Ulfric used the voice and killed the High King. The Imperials are calling it a murder and called off the terms of the duel. There's been bloodshed ever since."
"Well, I know my battles." Barbaria said. "I'm not saying it's right, but if it was a duel, it shouldn't count as a murder."
"Too bad not everyone sees it that way." Jarl Balgruff said as he entered himself into our conversation. "Most Nords wish to protect Jarl Ulfric's honor while most Imperials call him a murderer. Helgen is the only neutral city in all of Skyrim because I don't want any part of this war. But with both sides of the war, I'm afraid I may not have a choice."
"We all have a choice, Jarl." I said. I wasn't entirely lying since the Skyrim game itself is basically half making a choice.
Just then, Irileth arrived. Beside her is a Whiterun guard. I recognized this situation and prepared.
"Jarl Balgruuf," Irileth said, "This man is from the Western Watchtower. Tell him what you told me."
The guard was still shaking in his armor and struggled to speak. "I… We were attacked. It came from out of nowhere?"
"What did?" Balgruuf asked.
"A dragon, my jarl. A great, fearsome dragon that struck from the sky above. I barely escaped with my life."
"You did fine." Balgruuf said. "Go home for now. Irileth, take a squadron of troops to the watchtower and take care of this dragon. Draco, Barbaria, I assume you'll help as well."
"Oh, you bet I am." Barbaria said. I haven't seen her that excited since the previous night. "I've always wanted to fight a dragon."
"Of course." I agreed.
Barbaria and I joined Irileth and her squad of guards. We exited the city and left for the western watchtower. As I predicted, it was half-destroyed and a guard was waiting for us.
"Soldier," Irileth said, "What happened?"
"You have to get out of here!" the soldier panicked. "The dragon! It attacked and… Oh, no! It's too late! It's returned!"
Everyone drew their weapons and looked up waiting for the dragon that only I knew as Mirmulnir. I looked at Barbaria, who was holding onto her sledgehammer.
"You're using your weapon right away?" I asked.
"Duh. It's a dragon. I may like fist-fighting, but I'm not stupid."
"Fair enough." I thought.
A second later, Mirmulnir had arrived. He flew over us breathing fire. Since the fires were real, the burn marks would be more lasting. That much was obvious. So I avoided them as often as I could. The archers shot their arrows and Mirmulnir was forced to the ground to recover. He breathed his fire again and most of us kept our distance. Barbaria went behind the dragon and slammed her sledgehammer on his tail making him wail.
Mirmulnir swung his tail and knocked Barbaria back. For some reason, that set something off in me. I charged at the dragon and swung my sword over his eye. He screamed to the sky as the scar I left began to bleed. I then saw the damaged watchtower and came up with an idea.
Mirmulnir looked at me and growled angrily. I ran to the wall of the watchtower and taunted the dragon.
"HERE!" I shouted waving my sword and shield. "COME HERE!"
Mirmulnir roared and charged straight towards me. I crouched down and prepared. Right when it was about to get me, I jumped out of the way making him impact into the tower. That's when the structure began to tumble.
See, I remembered that game physics don't apply to this version of Skyrim. Any immortal object can be as fragile as any real version of it, including a building. So when the dragon hit the tower, the whole thing naturally fell over right on top of him. Mirmulnir couldn't escape his fate as every brick crashed over his body. We all backed away until the tower was completely gone. Barbaria and I went through the rubble and found Mirmulnir struggling to breathe. I looked at my partner and we both nodded. I placed my sword facing down onto the dragon's skill. Barbaria swung her sledgehammer up and hit the sword's hilt. The blade went straight into the dragon's skull and he died instantly.
"Killed my first dragon." Barbaria said. "What a fun day." She then punched me in the shoulder. "Nice thinking using the tower."
Underneath us, the dragon's corpse began to rot until he was nothing but bones now. Barbaria and I jumped off the pile of bricks and watched the body disappeared completely. Suddenly, a stream of light escaped and impacted at me. I knew exactly what it was, but something I didn't expect happened also. Another stream left the corpse and hit Barbaria too. I was completely beside myself, as were the rest of the guards.
"I can't believe it." One of them said. "You're… Dragonborn."
"Dragonborn?" Barbaria asked. "What's that?"
"In the old legends, the Dragonborn had the ability to be masters of the Voice capable of using them just by seeing a Word of Power absorbing the soul of a dragon."
"And you think it's us?" I asked feigning ignorance.
"Well, this is a strange thing. Usually, when a dragon dies, their soul is only absorbed by one Dragonborn. But never have I thought of seeing a soul absorbed by two people."
I agreed. I never thought there could be two people who could absorb dragon souls in Skyrim. Then again, other than Miraak, there's only supposed to be one Dragonborn, so I can't say for certain.
"How do we tell?" Barbaria asked.
"Hold on." I said. "Barbaria, remember back at Bleak Falls Barrow, when we were drawn to a word on a stone wall that was glowing?"
"How could I not?"
"Well, what if that was a Word of Power? I remember hearing a single word echo in my ears when it happened. Hang on."
I turned around to where no one was. I took a deep breath and spoke.
"Fus!"
A strong wave escaped from my lips and brushed through the grass like a strong wind. All the guards talked amongst themselves while Barbaria came after me.
"Fus!"
And just like before, the sound exploded out of her mouth. The guards were even more chattering until Ireleth spoke up. While she did that, Barbaria came to me.
"So I'm some kind of dragon-soul-sucking warrior?" Barbaria asked. "I gotta admit, that does sound kinda cool."
"Looks like things got a lot more interesting for us." I said.
Barbaria grabbed the back of my head and forced a kiss on my lips. Of course, I wasn't going to fight back. Who would? When she released me, she was going to say something… until something stopped her.
"DOHVAKIN!"
The noise erupted right past us. We followed the noise and saw that it came from where I knew we'd here from in a minute: High Hrothgar, home of the Greybeards.
"What was that?" Barbaria asked.
"I believe…" I answered, "That would be our next call to adventure."
Author's Note: After my last chapter, I have gained quite a few new OC bios from my readers. Some I liked. Some I couldn't handle. Rest assured, I intend to reveal them in due time and credit everyone who made them. If you've already given me an OC, you're free to give me another if you wish. Next time is another character that I created myself. Any and all comments are welcome.
