Episode 02: Gryll's Smash Ultimate Fighter's Pass Volume 2

"Well everyone," Gryll shouted, jumping onto her couch, "the time is upon us! The first character in Smash Ultimate's second fighter pass releases this month! And guess what? It's…"

Gryll suddenly looked nervous and confused, sweat beading on her forehead as she looked around the room for a bit. Then, she cleared her throat and shakily continued, "...er, I don't know who it is."

"Hold on, let me look it up a second," she said, pulling out her laptop and doing a Google search. After a few moments, she stopped typing and sat in silence. Nearly 30 seconds later, words finally began to pass through her lips: "...ARMS? ARMS? Out of all the characters and franchises that the team could choose, they choose some lame, gimmicky, inferior fighting game!?"

Just before she could completely rage, the onion witch stopped for a second, slowly took some deep breaths, and eventually calmed herself down enough to continue speaking.

"Mr. Sakurai-san…" Gryll said, still feeling angry and disappointed, "...are you feeling okay? No, I'm being serious. I think all this working on the game has been wearing you out."

"Someone oughta help you out with this little problem," Gryll winked. "Yeah, that's right. I'm gonna be joining in on the thousands of people who have already voiced their opinions on this subject. However, I'm gonna try to bring some unique ideas to the table, as well as sharing my feelings on the more popular wishes for DLC."

"So join me, and I will make Smash Ultimate great again!" Gryll shouted, slamming her fist. Here's my top 5 choices for Fighter's Pass, Vol. 2."

Number 5

"Another Sonic character," Gryll answered bluntly.

"Yeah, I know what you're thinking: 'But I thought the Smash Bros. team wanted to add characters from new franchises.' Well, I did too, but then I found out we were getting Byleth." Gryll groaned and rolled her eyes.

"So yeah, I'd like to see Sakurai make a better Sonic than anything SEGA had come up with in the past 10 years (he's already done this with Mega Man). Plus, with the recent release of the Sonic movie- and even more recent talk of making a sequel- this is a great time for Sonic right now."

"As for who I want for this spot specifically…" Gryll shrugged, "...eh, I really don't care that much. My only wish is that it's a main-ish character. It could be Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Eggman- heck, I'll even take Rouge. Just make it happen!"

Number 4

"While I'm on the subject of SEGA," Gryll began, "here's a wild idea: Beat from Jet Set Radio."

Total silence filled the room for a few moments, before Gryll broke it by saying, "Yeah, I know. Not really an iconic character. I get it. But you gotta remember: we got Byleth and we're getting a character from ARMS, so all cards are on the table right now. And don't forget, Jet Set Radio has an adoring fanbase. SiIvaGunner's King for Another Day Tournament, a contest all about fanbases, was won by DJ Professor K, a character from these games, so there's people out there who care about these games and they want them to be represented more, much like Mega Man and Banjo & Kazooie."

"Coincidence? I think not!" Gryll added smugly.

"So, if Beat was added to Smash, then what kind of a fighter would he be? Well, I'm thinking that he would be like Inkling, but with a few twists. For one, instead of ink, he would use spray paint. Like Inkling, he would also have a limited supply of this paint, and it would fill up slowly over time, or it could fill up when you land successful blows. Also, for some added fun, he could be like Bowser Jr. and make his alternate costumes other characters from his series, like Tab, Gum, and- my personal favorite- Corn."

"I mean, come on," she continued, starting to get distracted, "who doesn't love Corn? He's like the best dude ever! It's all in the name, for crying out loud!"

Number 3

Gryll took some deep breaths and prepared herself mentally for what she was about to say.

"Geno," was what came out.

"Yeah, that's right. I put Geno on my list. But he's not on here because I want him to be in it. I just put him here because everyone else wants him."

"I'll be honest, I don't see a lot of potential in Geno, at least not enough for him to be a full-fledged Smash fighter. Plus, licensing issues between Nintendo and Square concerning Geno have been really dicey, and I really don't want to put Sakurai through any more trouble than he needs to."

"That being said, much like the people who wanted Banjo & Kazooie, these fans want Geno for the same reason: because they hate seeing a character they love being mistreated. And honestly, I can relate. Sakurai's Mega Man is better than anything Capcom made in the past 15 years, so there's that. Plus, if Sakurai gets permission to add Geno to Smash, I'm sure he'd find a way to create a moveset for him that'll work. I couldn't do it, but he might be able to."

"We all know that Mr. Sakurai dabbles in the supernatural. Just sayin'."

Number 2

"Remember Yo-Kai Watch?" Gryll asked sincerely. Fittingly, the only response she received was a chirping cricket.

"Yeah, that's what I thought. Which is why we need a character from Yo-Kai Watch in Smash Ultimate!"

"Now, I know what you're thinking: 'Gryll, I don't care about Yo-Kai Watch. Why would Nintendo care about a series that I don't care about?' Well, it's pretty obvious that Nintendo cares a lot about this franchise. I mean, we all remember those promos, right?"

The scene cut to a Nintendo promo for Yo-Kai Watch called "The Very Important Meeting," specifically the part where Reggie walks in on Bill Trinen eating donuts.

Reggie: Bill! Bill! BILL! B̷̨̭̭͖̗͈̭̰̄͜ͅI̷̧̭̲̗͎̘͕̬͎͈͖̍̏̍̋͐̑̌̚̚͝ͅL̸̨͓͉͈̝̏̾͊̋̓̉̒̒̆̆̇̐̐Ļ̶̼̲͎̦͍͓͍̺͚̜̾̽́̊͐̊͘!̶̀̇̃͐̋͑̔̿͒͒͛̀͘͜͠!̸͖̤͎̱̑͊̆͛̌̊̈̋̀̔̏̈́̊͠!̵̡̧̱̲̝͙͕͙͉̦͎̯̳̰̺̾̍̈́̒̄̂̿̑̾̚̕͝

"Plus, since I'm sure you don't know about it, there are currently 4 installments in the Yo-Kai Watch franchise. Yeah, you thought there was just one? Nope! There are 4!"

"Hmm, maybe I should review Yo-Kai Watch some day…" Gryll thought out loud.

"Anyway, now that I've made my point, which character should they add? Well, I think the answer is obvious: the series mascot, Jibanyan. Sure, his moveset isn't very diverse, but like Geno, I'm sure Sakurai would find a way to make it work."

"Hey, we already went over this. Sakurai is a dark artist. There's no denying it. That's how he put Sans in Smash."

Number 1

"Okay, here we go," Gryll stated, "my number one choice for the Smash Ultimate Fighter's Pass.

Now, you know the four other choices I picked? Well, forget all of them, because this choice is the only one that matters!"

Gryll dramatically inhaled and revealed who her top pick is:

"Hornet from Hollow Knight!"

"Alright, now hear me out," she continued. "While Hollow Knight isn't that popular of a game- heck, you probably haven't even heard about it until just now- Nintendo has really been getting into the indie game craze lately. Plus, of all the characters I mentioned so far, Hornet is the most fitting for a fighting game. Another plus, since the sequel to Hollow Knight, Silksong, is supposed to be released in the near future, putting its main character in a game like Smash Bros. would make for a great promotion."

"Oh, and another great thing about Hornet… she's not a sword fighter!" she shouted excitedly. "Yeah, I know we're all sick of seeing those! Also, her needle would make for a unique fighting style for Smash. Would it be a good unique? I don't know, but at least it'd be new."

"So yeah, that's my list. Honestly, I'm not super proud of it, and if I may be so blunt, I really don't care which characters are added into Smash or not; it doesn't really change my experience with the game either way. But maybe it'll give you guys something to think about, something to chew on. If it doesn't, that's okay too."

"Well, that's all I've got for you today," Gryll said, rising from her seat. "I'm gonna go see if any YouTubers are going insane because Min Min is in Smash now."

A/N: Hey guys, it's me, the spucubed! I've finally broken out of my writing funk! You may have noticed that this isn't the Cave Story episode, but don't worry, I haven't forgotten about it. But before I release that, I've got another episode planned that celebrates the upcoming Paper Mario game, so be on the lookout for that.

Well, that's all I got for now. See you later!
